final_threeAfter watching the Emmy's this weekend, some people called the win for The Amazing Race an upset over Survivor or The Apprentice. After the finale for the fifth season of the Amazing Race, nobody in their right mind could question the quality of this show. The shows that involve voting off other contestants are great, but they become much more formulaic during the course of the season and especially during the final episode. The Amazing Race has a format featuring parts that look the same every week, but end up being unbelievably diverse and unpredictable as you sit through each installment. For this seasons last episode, we had Chip and Kim, Colin and Christie, Brandon and Nicole, and the Bowling Moms, Linda and Karen. Four teams fought to earn a million dollars, and if I sound overly dramatic, it's about one percent of the drama they packed into this episode.

At the end of the last leg, the big story was Colin and Christie. Chip and Kim finished first, and used the Yield to delay the two Texans, and Colin and Christie looked like they were bent on revenge. The Bowling Moms made it into second place, as high of a finish as they have had during the whole race and Brandon and Nicole were not far behind. The first step of the race involved making it onto one of two charter planes separated by 45 minutes, and flying to another provence in the Philippines. Chip and Kim and Brandon and Nicole made it on the first charter, leaving the Bowling Moms and Colin and Christie on the second

Even though they finished last and had to confiscate all their money and go without a stipend for this leg, Colin and Christie had no problem begging for it, just like everybody else who was saved by a non-elimination leg. Although I liked the idea of not giving the losing team any money, in reality this little twist didn't do much because three out of the final four teams, and four out of the last five were saved by a non-elimination leg. Chip and Kim were the only people that didn't finish last at some point, although they came close several times.

The first challenge of the day was easy enough. I had a little trouble following the early part of the episode because Christie's boobs were out there babe, and I was loving every minute of it. Maybe I am jealous of Colin and his great catch, so I compensate by making fun of him. Or, he could be a huge egotistical asshole. Either way, teams had to take a boat and find a clue on one of three different islands. Each island had a flag, but only the island with the Philippines' national flag would contain a valid clue. The others were fakes, and because of the distance between islands, each mistake meant another twenty minutes by boat searching for the next flag. To aid in their search, the teams were given goggles to scope out the beaches. Chip and Kim had no clue where they were going, so they went to the closest flag. Brandon and Nicole followed them, perhaps because they didn't want to be too far behind, or perhaps it was because Brandon hadn't figured out the importance of the "bi" part of binoculars. He had the lens cover on one of the pieces attached, which must of done something to his vision, right? Good thing there were no trinoculars, or Brandon would have been really stuck. Even the producers made fun of brandon, showing only half of the binocular shot when Brandon was looking through them.

The first flag was incorrect, as Chip found out, so they moved along to the next one. Brandon and Nicole, who took the same Jeepney with Chip and Kim, didn't even leave their boat, trusting Chip when he said he found no clue. At the next island, Chip and Kim, who had earlier promised to be ruthless during the journey, pretended to have stumbled upon another incorrect clue, when they were actually on the correct island. This time Chip and Kim told Brandon and Nicole that it was the wrong island, in hopes of throwing them off enough to give them an advantage. Chip flat out denied they were on the correct island, but Nicole was plenty skeptical and so they checked out the flag and found it was indeed the correct one. After the flags, everybody had to use some snorkels to find their next clue among some giant clams. Kim didn't know how to swim, and Nicole seemed pretty weak as well. She found the clue, but nearly drowned in the process. Chip swam to see if she was all right and she told him to go away. If I was Chip, I would have swum under her and taken the clue, but he was too nice and swam on. Eventually, Chip found his clue and they were right behind Brandon and Nicole to the next challenge.
