You Cannot Touch The Seacrest! -
by B-side
Does Ryan Seacrest fear the gentle touch of another man? We can't say for sure, but judging by this brief but telling moment from last night's American Idol, it seems as though our favorite moppet host was mucho uncomfortable when Bo Bice placed a friendly hand on his back. "Yo yo!" protested Seacrest as he reached behind and forcibly pulled Bo's hand off the sacred territory that is Ryan's lumbar region. The entire moment happened so quickly, it was easy to overlook. Thanks to TVgasm reader Sandra though, we were able to go back and capture the entire awkward experience. Let the conspiracy theories abound!

Oh, and this just in: ABC News will be using this clip to anchor an hour-long exposé on the secret bond between Bo Bice and Ryan Seacrest. DETAILS PENDING!

i saw an awkwardly executed low 5, with an elongated sequence of hand-holding.

To me, it looked like Bo went to shake Ryan's hand and Ryan awkwardly tried to grab it with the wrong hand....

yeah, I thought it was definitely a cockblock at first, but upon further inspection, I think it is just a handshake attempt gone horribly, horribly wrong.
Posted by: Jess | May 12, 2005 6:14 AM(#8 of 26)
A handshake gone wrong doesn't end up with both men standing with 3 feet of uncomfortable space between them and a "I hope they didn't notice that" look on their face. Hell a couple more feet and they both would have been out of the frame. My gaydar went off immediately. Paula and Corey Cock has nothing on the scandal that is Seamoncrest and Bo Dick.

I didn't catch that when watching, but omg, that is funny as hell. I seem to remember a college class when we discussed nonverbal communication, what is the message Ryan??? Perhaps we should get this clip to experts for further analysis. It could be something as simple as the Seacrest jacket was made of a material so expensive, he didn't want Bo Bice's cooties all over it.

ANTF, I also noticed this, but I thought that their reaction of stepping apart was more of an "I'm embarrassed because that silly, uncoordinated messed-up handshake thing just happened on camera and I hope no one ends up talking about it" move by each of them. Seriously, people who know everyone is watching them can't feel good about screwing up a simple handshake in a way that they know will cause strangers to mock them!

Ashes, coming from a Bi-sexual male, I know uncomfortable sexual handshake between two men who are trying to keep it on the DownLow. And that was exactly what happened.
Seamoncrest has had dozens of odd handshakes that just didn't connect and he's never reacted that way to other males or females.

Well, watched it again a couple of times. Bo is standing still, hand extended in handshake mode the whole time. Seacrest walks up, not watching, hand up as though for a high five, then walks too close to Bo to catch the handshake, then grabs it...maybe to make sure it doesn't look like they meant to hug? He kept yammering the whole time during the move, right?
When I'm at conventions and meeting strange people and stuff, I often screw up the handshake protocol (have a drink in my right hand, have to wipe off the condensation so my hand's not clammy, reach for a handshake when the other person's not looking and then retract it feeling stupid, etc.). It sets a tone, for me at least, where I then feel awkward for the rest of the encounter. I had a perfectly nice guy turn completely awkward with me forevermore when he accidentally stepped on my foot during a meet and greet! And it's not b/c there was sexual tension!
But...I don't entirely discount the "whoa, hands off the goods" vibe from Seacrest. Looks like Bo was just handshakin' it and it got bobbled.

I just have to say that I find it somewhat suprising that ANTF is a male. Maybe I haven't been paying attention but I've always pictured you as a female. Sorry if I'm wrong for saying that, but I just wanted to put it out there.

It looked to me like an Ian/Probst meeting from Survivor. You know the whole, "Whew, Bo! Smellin' a little ripe there! Don't get too close." Put that little scene in your head and watch it again. Bo does tend to break out the beads whilst hauling that mic all over the stage. Must be heavier than it looks. Drop already, Bo!

Yeah, I just watched it in slomo too and it is a handshake gone bad. Ryan wasn't paying attention so it almost turned into a hand around the waist thing. But the "yo yo yo" shout out made by Ryan kinda made him look assholey to me.

hey Wrong For That (WTF), when I have the anonimity of the internet I can be a little more expressive than usuall, particulary since I'm not "out". just don't call me fag. lol. Plus, most of the shows blogged on here are really feminine shows. Where's my Contender posts!!!??? I get a kick out of it.

I was sad to see Aaron Carter go last night. I think he's good. I guess the remaining 3 are the better singers/performers. Go Vonzell! Ryan Seacrest "out" is Hot!

Damn my piece of shit work computer. No Quicktime, and if I install w/out the ok of Nick Burns, company computer guy I'll be kicked out like Ann Heche, err Anthony.

Hey Sandy- I must agree with you no Quicktime on the work PC sucks. I missed the show last night but didn't fear because of the recaps, and now I learn that there was something good and I missed it. After reading the great debate I want to see the clip....I wonder if I can sneak out of work early ...

Why is nobody mentioning Carrie professing her love for Anthony. Was I halucinating the moment?? Please tell I was not the only one. Anthony began his yucky goodbye song and on the screen behind him was a hysterically tearful Carrie clearly saying "I LOVE YOU!" Until that very moment I thought she was a good girl with a good head on her shoulders. Eeeeek.

Well, I watched AI tonight and after Ryan Seacrest announced that Vonzell was leaving AI, Did anyone notice that when they turned around to watch her journey, Bo put his hand on Vonzell's back and then Ryan on the other side put his hand over Bo's hand so it looked like they kinda held hands, but Ryan quickly moved his hand away... Hmm what do you guys think??
Posted by: TDK | May 18, 2005 11:20 PM(#25 of 26)
As others have noted, what it looks like is that Ryan was going to put his arm around Bo, then realized Bo was trying to shake his hand, and a brief bit of awkward hand-holding ensued. As much as I'd like to chalk it up to gay panic, t'ain't what happened here.
