The Emmys Keep It Fresh! -

The 2005 Emmy nominations came out today, and although there was plenty of hype that this year's list would be "wide open," it's nice to see that the stodgy academy members have kept it simple and dumb. Back again for more adulation: Will & Grace, The West Wing, and Everybody Loves Raymond. Fantastic! Okay, true, we finally got some lovin' for Scrubs (Outstanding Comedy), but anyone who's seen the show recently knows that the best years of this comedy may be behind it. Arrested Development fans must surely be happy that smug Jason Bateman received a nom, despite being the show's weakest cast member, but where's the love for Will Arnett or David Cross?
Unsurprisingly, ABC's brother and sister hits, Lost and Desperate Housewives, both scooped up plenty of noms (but none for you, EVA LONGORIA! Ha!), and I'm sure Emmy defenders will say, "See! Something new! We're edgy!" but honestly, who wasn't expecting these series to clean up? That's okay though. At least they kept Joey and Blind Justice out of the potential winner's circle.
In the omission department, The OC received nada in terms of the major acting prizes (sorry, Peter Gallagher), and internet geek favorite Veronica Mars remained shut out as well (still haven't seen it though). Most glaringly, however, was Shohreh Aghdashloo whose superb performance on 24 went completely unrecognized. For shame, voters.
At least one category seemed truly well-picked: reality competition. Up for the award: Survivor, The Apprentice, American Idol, Amazing Race, and Project Runway. Can't argue with that group. Also, in the Reality Program category, the struggling Project Greenlight received a much-deserved nom as well. Still crossing my fingers for a follow-up Gulager season...
There's plenty more to discuss (Blythe Danner got three nominations? Shut up, BLYTHE!); so check out the official list of Emmy nominations or simply read the abridged AP article.
What do you think about the noms?

Jeffery Tambor was nominated.
And so was Jeremy Piven. Now that's a deserving nod.

No nods for Rescue Me? Bastards.

So who does Ray Romano have compromising pictures of? I really thought it was Mike O'Malley's year.

I'm sooooo glad that Eva Langoria got snubbed again, I hope it helps her get over herself!
And Project Runway was nominated, brilliant, such a great show!

I'm glad to see that Glenn Close was nominated for her work on The Shield. She rocked this season.
What's up with this Huff show? Has anyone ever seen it?

A significant portion of the Emmy voters obviously think it's still 1999. After all, they think that Will and Grace and The West Wing are still among the 5 best examples of a comedy and a drama, respectively. Ridiculous.
Any FX show and/or Veronica Mars would be more deserving than The West Wing has been for the past two or three seasons running, while Will and Grace has sunk so low that I would even have supported the nomination of the US version of The Office over it!
But at least Rosie and her Bus movie got no attention.

Jason Batemen gets nominated for Arrested Development? We all know his best work was on Silver Spoons, so this is probably a belated apology for that because he sucks ass on that overrated show.
If PRoject Runway wins I hope they make Jay accept the award so he can get onstage witha ten gallon hat and a feather boa and call everyone fags and tell them to fuck off because and tell everyone their such "fucking losers.

And who the fuck (sorry tuliplovr)knew that Will and Grace was still even ON T.V.? Its like waking up and finding out Chico and the Man got 3 nominations.
And personally I think TVgasm should have its own reality show emmy awards. Biggest media whore, biggest actual whore, worst host, funniest moment, etc. Let all us faithful fans vote on the winners. Winner gets a picture of CHenbots camel tow signed by the entire gasm staff.

Thanks! I'm here all week folks! Enjoy the Veal Piccata!

You forgot the best nomination:
The Apprentice: Season 2 Finale for Directing, Nonfiction Programming.
Worst. Finale. Ever.

No lovin' for Will Arnett!?! What is this world coming to?

In resonse to one poster, Huff is a cable show (either HBO or Showtime, never remember which since Tivo gets it for me) that rocks! It explores the internal life of Azaria, who plays a shrink with a complicated family life, and with a best friend (played by Oliver Platt) who gets a lot of screen time and who is running a bit wild lately. It's a GREAT ensemble cast, with his mom played by Blythe Danner, and no-name amazing actors as his son and wife. I was glad to see Azaria get a nod, but wished the show had gotten a best drama nom. The other two shows I watch regularly were similarly snubbed -- Rescue Me (this is SO well done!!) and Medium (glad to see Arquette get the nod for best actress, although she'll probably lose), so I'm not very happy today. As per usual, quality is overlooked for hype.

Why do I love this website?
Chenbot, Chico and the Man and Riding the Bus with my Sister. All in one sitting.
I always thought Longoria was something only penicillin could fix.

Where's RIDING THE BUS?! We won't get a "THSHHHHANK YOU!!!!!!!!!" from rosie.

I'm flabbergasted (love that word) that Shoreh didn't get a nomination! She was the best reason to watch television this season. Just for saying Behrooooooz over and over again she should win! I kelly Shoreh!
The emmy's will be terrible, it will be a goodbye swan song for Raymond and be boring. Old people suck!

I second the idea of having a tvgasm Emmy ballot. That would be such fun.

Yeah, TVGasm awards, please!!!
The geriatric emmy voters are so out of touch with what most people are actually watching. We need awards for us folks younger than 65 whose favorite show of all time isn't Murder, She Wrote or Matlock.

go scrubs go! this is one of the few shows on tv left that acknowledge that black people and white people do, in fact, co-exist in the same dimension... (friends?? Sex in the city?? UPN???)

What is amazing is that not one of the CSI made the list. But they are on the top 10 for most watched shows

Any awards show that shuns Nip/Tuck and The Wire and instead chooses to recognize the overrated Desperate Housewives (except for Marcia Cross) and the irrelevant West Wing is nothing but a sham.

I guess we old folks are behind the times. I would rather watch reruns of Diagnosis Murder than any of the ridiculous reality garbage that is filling the TV viewing hours. I believe the high ratings are based on viewers who have nothing better to do but watch the idiot box all day and night. What did we old folks do before TV and Uncle Miltie? We had a life! Get one people!

I am personally thrilled that Naveen Andrews was nominated. His voice is to me what Shohreh's is to all you men out there. Of course, if he shows up with Barbara Hershey, which he undoubtedly will, it will totally kill it for me.

B- Oh my gosh your email totally made me see the light! I now know that instead of reality tv, I should be trolling the internet looking for people in order to pass judgment on the way they spend their leisure time! THANK YOU B!!!!

Aries, Housewives is treated as a comedy, so it didn't take a spot that could've gone to Nip/Tuck or The Wire. And even if you think Housewives is overrated, you surely agree that it is at least more feasible to call it one of the best comedies on tv than it is to call Will and Grace one of the best in 2004-2005. But I completely agree with you that Nip/Tuck should have been nominated instead of The West Wing. And at least one other actor from Scrubs (John C. McGinley as Perry or Neil Flynn as Janitor, for example) could've had the spot for best supporting actor that is wasted on Sean Hayes. There are some good nominations (finally Scrubs, for example) but in just about every category, there is at least one nominee who shouldn't be there.

Nip/Tuck was robbed!!! Did you see the season finale?! It has to be the most original show on tv. Period.
And David Cross DEFINITELY deserves a nod for Mrs. Featherbottom...Is she funny?

Point taken Ashes. I guess I can agree that DH is more deserving than W&G, but that's kind of like praising the C student for being better than the D student. Hopefully the B students (Arrested Development or Scrubs) will beat them both.

i resent the comments as per above about "old people" and "young people" voting for and liking certain shows. that is irrelevant. the emmys are for EVERYONE to enjoy. and let the best shows win.
