A Ten-uous Situation? -
by B-side
I don't know when the jive became a Latin dance, but apparently, it is. Mario came on stage dressed kind of like Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future. I was really hoping he'd be jiving to "Johnny Be Good," but instead, it was "Shake a Tailfeather" (by Ray Charles, not Nelly). As usual, Mario was great, but the judges nailed him on some minor quibbles. They all said his arm tended to flop around, with Len saying it dangled like "a bit of cotton hanging from a nickel egg." I'm not sure what that means, but I liked it!
Ultimately, Mario earned nines from everyone, bringing his total to 84 out of 90 -- just two points ahead of Emmitt. Victory shall be his!
Joey & Edyta: Tokyo Drift
With his head finally no longer bobbling, Joey took the stage with his partner to perform not just a mambo, but "Mambo #5"! That's right, the Lou Bega classic at last reared its ugly yet catchy head on Dancing with the Stars. Considering how excited I was for someone to dance to this silly song, I was slightly let down by Joey and Edyta. I mean, they were very good, but I didn't absolutely love them. I guess it's hard to follow Emmitt.
Ultimately, the judges praised him for letting loose and coming out of his shell (and yes, the bobblehead immediately returned). Carrie Ann and Len both gave him nines, but then randomly, Bruno slapped him with a ten. What the? You give a ten to this but not Emmitt? Lame.

Not that there's anything wrong with it...
THE RESULTS!
As usual, I pretty much watched the results show in fast forward. I stopped occasionally when I thought I saw something interesting, but more often than not, I was highly disappointed. Martina McBride showed up to be annoying and boring (sorry, ballroom dancing does not match her style). And at one point, the dancers went a little nuts to Michael Jackson's classic, "Billy Jean." Ultimately, however, it was time for eliminations. The three remaining teams were Joey, Monique, and Jerry. I anticipated some crazy upset where Jerry would be cleared to go to next week, leaving Joey and Monique to battle it out, but no, it was Joey who was saved from the bottom two. At that point, I then readjusted my prediction, saying that Monique would be going home in an upset. However, I was wrong again. At long last, Jerry was put out of his misery. He delivered a heartfelt goodbye to everyone, getting choked up in the process. At one point, he co-opted Samantha Harris's microphone and assumed the role of Jerry the talkshow host. He started to make a speech about everyone on the show, and for whatever reason, I was totally enthralled. That's why I was so pissed that Tom Bergeron interrupted to ask him inane questions about Kym (who Jerry essentially likened to the second daughter he never had). I'm as big a fan of The Berge as anyone, but he should have stayed quiet and let Jerry have his Final Thought, as it were.
What did you think about this week? Happy with the results? Who was the best dancer? The worst? Who's going home next?

Joey is seriously working my last nerve at this point ! Enough with the thank you's already. Who are you waving at in the upper deck ? And why do his costumes seem to be the only ones with sort of a "gay" vibe to them ?

"...Joey's bobblehead went into full power, nodding and rocking at speeds so great, I thought it might unhinge itself and roll out of the room."
You sleigh me, B-Side! But I can't help loving Joey... he seems genuine to me.
Mario, on the other hand, that specimen drives me nuts when he tries to play coy and pretend he's such a good-guy family man.
Am I the only one who suspects that Cheryl is getting a bit high on herself? And did we really need the close-up of Emmitt's toe jam?

I was really hoping he'd come out dressed 90s fab, jiving to the theme song of "Saved By The Bell." If only we could be so lucky...

Great recap B-side. I really like Emmitt, but I don't think his dance was worthy of 2 10's let alone 3. And as smug looking as Mario gets during his dance, the man can dance. Period. I didn't see noodle arms. They are really gaying up Joey, with the song choices, and get-ups. If I were him I would INSIST on wearing something manly.
I was teary eyed during Jerry's exit. But, it was his time.

One more thing. I am going to sue ABC if my ears start to bleed. I HATE those singers, and band.

B-side- I love reading your stuff! I actually had tears running down my face at some of the stuff you write (today's fave- your version of Bruno's random comments). But I am disappointed- first, all sausage, no sizzle, then all cheese, no burger but today you let ALL HEELS NO BALLS go by? I'll let it slide because the rest was so good. Thank you for my weekly laugh fest!
P.S. I love Joey- he is my favorite- he can definitely can move! However, my money is on Slater for the win.

Well, yes, it was time for Jerry to go and I think he has been interesting to watch. I thought his fox trot was wonderful.
I just don't get all the hype over Emmitt. He's OK but I don't see what all the fuss is about.
I most enjoy Mario but it seems as though the judges expect the same kind of performance from him as they would from a professional who, after all, trains for years to get every position of hand and arm to be perfect for every style of dance.

I agree with Claudia- I had to reread the entire recap, sure I missed the ALL HEELS, NO BALLS.

I started this season not knowing what emmett even looked like, but now he is my favorite- I think it is the energy he brings to the dance and how much fun he looks like he is having, plus he can really dance. Maybe I'm just not used to seeing such a large man with that grace and ability to shimmy, but he is my favorite.
Joey is good, but I don't want to get up and dance like I do after emmett's.
Mario=creepo He makes my skin crawl everytime he winks, yucko
Monique- well thats where 1/2 the votes go in my house on account of high school musical---hope she sticks around

Funniest re-cap yet. I laughed so hard I snorted.
So, finally, predictably (and fairly), bye to Jerry, although I did tear up at his good byes. I'll miss him.
I originally thought it would be down to Joey and Mario, but Miss Monique is really upping the ante, and who would have guessed emmett would be such a force!
Now it gets interesting and unpredictable.

Sorry to see Jerry go. This was the first week I ever voted cause I figured he needed it.
I'm not a Mario fan, but he is the best dancer. And Karina is super hot.
Joey seems genuine and very likeable.
Sometimes Emmitt just doesn't look right up there. I'm used to seeing him play football.
Monique is not very good and that is why she'll be going home next (not because she is a woman).
Did I mention Karina is hot?

I've been reading your recaps for a while now and enjoying them tremendously (sometimes more than the actual shows--though of course lots of people seem to feel this way). I was finally moved to comment because I was surprised that no one so far mentioned one of the filler-vignettes during either the Tuesday or Wednesday show--the reaffirmation of the male participants' heterosexuality. It was this weird "sure we dance but don't anyone dare question our manhood just because we wear tight stretchy sparkly outfits." It was the first time that I didn't like Emmitt during this show--and usually he is my favorite. They even showed all the men--"celebrities" and professional dancers--watching football together in between rehearsals because _everyone knows_ that the only true measure of a man's heterosexuality is his level of interest in American football. Did anyone else feel weirded out by that?
