Lost in Translation -
by EdHIll
But why the long wait you ask? Oh there's a reason. ABC has completely revamped the Lost season, and we even have a special Lost video revealing some of the biggest mysteries of the game before the season even starts. It's so good in fact, it may even be enough to hold us over for one more excruciating week. Find out more after the jump.
If you are a Lost fanatic like me you took with both relief and annoyance the announcement that the new season wouldn't start until October 4th. Annoying because it's so far into the fall season before it starts, but good because they have also decided to radically reorganize schedule so there will be no repeats. That's right this season Lost will be split into two "mini seasons" where we get a short 6 episode season starting October fourth ending with a big cliffhanger, then a 13 week hiatus while another show takes over its slot. Finally, Lost will return in February with it's remaining 16 episodes. Each "mini season" will have it's own narrative arc from beginning to end. A radical idea that I think will make for a better season. I am of course assuming that at some point during both these mini seasons Charlie will act like a prick, Kate will be a huge cokctease and Michael will call out for his son in an enthusiastic way.
Also, as many Lost fans know, this summer ABC have created a marketing campaign for the new season of Lost via an online webgame. I mentioned it some of my recaps from last season. Unfortunately I decided to spend my summer going to the beach and watching Project Runway and haven't had time to play it. I always thought I'd just wait until the end of August and play it all in one weekend. Unfortunately the game was time sensitive and many of the websites and clues given are already defunct. The game was a long complex one that utilized real world events, fake TV commercials, and fake websites. It also included some not so subtle commercial tie in's with Jeep, Sprite and Monster.com. And of course who can forget the excruciatingly bad fake TV interview on Jimmy Kimel Live. If you want the full intricacies of the Lost game revealed go here.
And of course of you cannot wait until next Wednesday, then I have something special for you, brought to my attention by TVgasm reader Staciatrix. One of the big "prizes" of the webgame is it reveals 70 disparate video clips that when put together through collection of 70 "glyphs" on the website www.hansoexposed.com (trust me, this game is complicated) it reveals a six and a half minute Dharma Initiative video clip.
The video is amazing. It reveals some of the biggest mysteries of the show so far. The video is hosted by the mysterious Alvar Hanso himself and tells us the history of the Dharma initiative, the reason for why it was created and what the purpose of it is. It also tells us, finally, what the numbers mean and why they have been broadcast over the airwaves of the pacific for the last 40 or so years.
Should be a great season. I can't wait.

EdHill...you have my head spinning. If I don't go to these sites you've mentioned or view the video, will I be as Lost as those on the island on premier nite???....or will the season also answer these questions for us?
I would like to at least watch the video cuz I'm dying to kno what those numbers mean....but if I do, will it become a spoiler for the show?

Fear not, this won't spoil anything on the show. Think of the game and the video as an internet only subplot.
I beleive the creators themselves said they never planned on explaining the #'s and what they mean on the show, so the internet game just solved the mystery for you.

Sadly, I am not looking forward to a third season of this show. I haven't even rushed out to buy season 2 on DVD. I just don't care anymore.
I was very patient last season and accepted the introduction of several new cast members to begin to care about. I even let the death of my favorite character (the underused and very promising Shannon) not deter me from watching the show.
But now, MOST of those new cast members are gone and their stories actually meant NOTHING. Their stories were a waste of our time -- just as the time and stories of Boone and Shannon have become. These two were the "eye candy" the producers had on the show to get some shallow viewers to tune in although they apparently had no intention of developing any storylines for them. We, the viewers, were duped into believing that EVERYONE was on the island for a reason and that all would be revealed in the future when need be. This has proven NOT to be the case.
The writers have enjoyed playing and toying with us. They dangle storylines in front of us and wacky incidents that the observant viewer picks up on . . . but for no reason other than to say I saw that. Case in point, the hatch of last season very apparently had two different sets of decor that were used just to throw us off and make us question new, unstained walls, filthy walls, new lamps, different stereos etc. Lamps were changed from scene to scene for NO reason other than make us think we were catching something important (we weren't and it sucked as much as The Sixth Sense's attempt at pulling wool over the viewer's eyes ONLY because it was convenient for the writers and producers and had NOTHING to do with story or context).
ABC keeps giving us these tired retreads of all-things-Lost and I no longer care. I am SSSSSOOOOO glad that they had Henry Gale narrate this last one for us. Why did ABC cast this actor to play Gale -- because he is freaky and spooky. Talk about type-casting . . . shame on ABC for this one.
What was important in season one was no longer important in season two and I fear they are going to do the same thing with season three. Sadly, they have forgotten that I initially CARED for these Lost individuals but the writers aren't making the show about THEM anymore. It is now about a four-toed statue and an island lit by a strobe light.
Did we really need all of that filler from last season just to get Mr. Eko? It was all a waste of our time. And as for Locke -- at one time he was the most interesting character on television but last season had no idea what to do with him. His personality is NOT the same as he was in season one and he is so poorly written it is laughable.
Wake up ABC!! There is a reason both of your freshman successes (Lost and Desperate Housewives) lost viewers last season. I am praying that there is more "season one" in this upcoming season.

Thanks NB! No, I just don't appreciate being laughed at and being used. And not to worry, I have no friends. :)
Do you have no concerns or problems with this once-great show?
Claire, Charlie, Hurley, Sun, Jin and Sayid are now all minor characters. I get that there are others on the island; but don't make me sympathize with them AT THE EXPENSE of the original people the show created for me to care about. Charlie (whom I don't care for) probably had a grand total of 52 lines last season. Sayid (who was pretty much forgotten after Shannon's death) had even fewer.
The show had something great -- that I will not deny. But they keep getting further from it and it disappoints me.
Did the statue really need to have only four toes?

TWilliams, I feel the same way. All this stalling stalling stalling reminds me of the years Clinton was in office and I'm sick of it. I found it particuarly annoying that they were able to summarize two seasons of this show in a one hour clip show. At least they're not going to seperate the new eps this season by months of reruns.

Twilliams and Ubiquitous,
I agree. What about the polar bear? The monster? And various other things. It just isn't fun to watch anymore. They seem to be getting more and more off the original idea, but remember that is exactly what Abrams did with Alias. He eventually ruined that show also by becoming obsessed with the Rimbaldi crap that was great at first but them took over the show. Lost was great and last season they just gave us boring flashbacks and annoying plots.

Well, I'm excited and I intend on watching. I'm sure it's really hard to keep a story line going for a show about plane crash survivors who haven't been rescued. I gotta give props to the writers for keeping us interested. I think this will be a great season, and there are plenty of loyal viewers and fans to make this season enjoyable. Looking forward to your recaps, EdHill.

"I found it particuarly annoying that they were able to summarize two seasons of this show in a one hour clip show."
This is EXACTLY my point. They are telling me the only thing I really needed to watch was this last episode? I have wasted my time with an hour every Wednesday night these past couple of years. Why waste my time with season 3 when I can watch the first recap of season 4 and get all that I needed to have caught!?! This is frustrating and I wish I could be as excited about the show as I once was . . . but the writers and producers (themselves) are letting us know the only important elements of the show can be summarized in an hour-long recap.
This sucks . . . the rest is -- honestly -- just filler.

or thisWell, I can't wait for this season to start, I figure the only way we are ever going to figure out why the black smoke,&other odd things are there....Last Wednesday was a way for ABC to bring new viewers up to date, the least they needed to know in order to watch this season, for people who aren't going to go out and buy the DVDs

Just because they summarized the big plotlines in one hour doesn't take anything away from the show. That was to help catch up people who had heard about the show but had not watched yet.
And besides, most people probably just watch it for the entertainment (the attractive cast, the scenery, and the concept of being stranded).
I'm really going to miss Ana Lucia this season.

I'm excited for the season to start (and for your recaps Ed). The video was creepy/entertaining and as a loyal viewer from the start, the only thing that ever disappointed me about this show was the numerous repeats, which they seem to be addressing with the new season. I was never one of those people that caught on to all the things going on offsides, and I think the storyline and quality of acting are intriguing enough to make me continue watching until the end. Maybe when you get too invested in a show you expect too much from it, but the writers have MILLIONS of fans to please and they're never going to make everyone happy.

Hee Hee, hardly@work you're pretty funny. :-) As much as this show irritates me I will most likely watch because I have watched for two years. I just wish we would get more answers sometimes than questions, or they would wrap some old plots up before opening new ones.

i for one can't wait. its the smartest show on tv and the most compelling. and to say that sayid, charlie, hugo etc, are all minor characters is nuts. obviously the season is going to shift onto the others, but Jin and Sayid and every other "minor" character is clearly going to have an impact on getting Kate Saywer and Jack out of the hands of the others.
cmon people! strap in and enjoy the ride!
and we've got the desmond and Penelope connection, Sun's baby, and who knows... looks like Locke might not be walking again.
the backstories are very important and i think really glue it all togehter.
i'll be watching.

Thanks, EdHill! I have been an avid viewer since the Premiere of Lost. I cannot wait for the new season. I already bought the 2nd season on DVD and after watching the season again, I am stoked! The only complaint I had about the previous season was the volume of repeats. But, the story itself has kept me hooked.
This is an ensemble show, so of course, you may not see your favorites each week. This is a "mystery" show, so of course, all your questions will not be answered each week or each season....that is how they hook ya. To all those naysayers out there, if you aren't excited and anxious about the new season, why are you posting here? Just to poop on our party? Betcha you'll watch anyway, since you're here now. I hope you do!
I'm so excited!!!! Thanks again EdHill. I'm almost as excited about your recaps as I am the new season. ANTM just wasn't the same.

The key genius of this show is that it imitates real life. Life does not wrap up in simple 1 hour segments where all questions are answered. I know in my own world, every answer leads to 20 more questions. As a result, the more I know, the more I realize I don't know and may never know. Lost is life encapsulated.
I like having NO FRIGGIN IDEA what the hell is going on. I've guessed right on a few items thus far, but for someone who always figures out the punch line too early (Sixth Sense, anyone?), it is refreshing to be surprised and shocked as often as when I watch Lost.
Incidentally, did anyone find it strange that the "electromagnetic incident" didn't seem to make it to where the Others can be found? It didn't seem that any of them experienced the shrieking noise and white light.

Thanks mistichristi . . . I can start bitching if it is desired.
I have already stated my case with some of the show's problems BUT would it honestly be too much for them to answer two or three questions because (and this is no slight exaggeration) there will still about a thousand unanswered ones remaining?!
It is a good show and I am glad that so many are still so exicted for its debut; I just think I invested way too much time into season one. Actually, it is more like WWWAAAYYYY too much time since I watched every episode like four or five times apiece.
My concern with the show is that with the more storylines they create/develop there are that many more conclusions they are going to have to come up with in a timely manner when the show concludes. At this rate, we'll have a whole season of finales because there will be that many storylines to end. I just don't want them to bite off more than they can chew.
And whomever is excited about Sun's baby . . . how many season's will it actually take her to have it?!? We've had a grand total of like 80 days on the island so far so it is going to take us a couple of years for her to even start showing a bump unless this is mutant-baby or something.

Thanks for the film, EdHill. Pretty cool. I look forward to the show and your recaps. I appreciate all the digging around on the internet you did last time and hope it continues. Heaven knows I don't have the time to go looking for this stuff. I also agree with others who've posted that the only thing bugging me last season was the repeats. I'm just going with the flow to see where it takes me and enjoying the ride.
TWilliams: you watched each episode 4 or 5 times apiece?!?!? Well no wonder you're disappointed. No tv show can stand up to that much scrutiny. As brilliant as Lost is, it's still just a tv show written and produced by humans (I'm assuming ;P) who have all the flaws the human viewers do. While I agree it's possible things were put in just to tease us, you have to admit it's equally possible that you read too much into every little detail. A changed lamp could mean the original got broken and the set dresser couldn't get another exact copy. Now tell the truth- are you still trying to figure out the grassy knoll, the moon landing, the secret messages on albums and all the other conspiracy theories out there? Just a little friendly advice TWilliams. Sit back, take a deep breath, exhale slowly and relax. And don't take this the wrong way but please get a life. I'm gonna start worrying about you if you don't :).
