Bubble Bobble - TVgasm

Over the past two seasons, I've occasionally watched an episode here and there to see if I was maybe crazy, but no, I wasn't. In fact, I thought Fox's short-lived Crackin' Up from last season was funnier (I still stand by that assertion to some extent). I rationed that the only reason why people seemed to like Arrested Development was because by last season, there were few if any other funny sitcoms out there to pick from. And besides, the show had received a much stronger marketing push than any of Fox's other critically hailed (but quickly cancelled) single-camera shows (we can probably thank exec-producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer for that). But then a funny thing happened. In my attempts to make it as a writer in Hollywood (so that one day, my work can be similarly thrashed by a callous blog), I decided that I'd have to write a "spec script" of Arrested Development (A spec script is basically an original episode of an existing show that's used as a writing sample). So I created season pass #3 for Arrested Development, and I'll tell you, third time's the charm. I have now been completely sucked into this show and can officially say that I "get it". While the punchlines can be very funny, the bulk of the humor lies in the characters and situations, both of which are often outlandish and silly. I'm not going to go into detail on why the show works (you can read EVERY OTHER BLOG for that), but I can wholeheartedly say that Arrested Development is the best live-action comedy on network television. Plus, now I'm actually looking forward to writing my spec script. As for the bubble factor, I don't think this show should be cancelled, and I'd honestly be surprised if it were to get the ax. At the same time, unlike Andy Richter Controls the Universe, FOX has really gotten behind this sitcom. They've tried everything short of holding Nielsen families by gunpoint to boost the ratings. I hope it comes back, but honestly, if it doesn't, there's no one to blame but ourselves. Pause for moment of shame and regret.

As for the other shows on the bubble, I'm not particularly impassioned. I'd like to see more of Life On A Stick because a) it's been getting funnier each week, and b) I have a personal bias towards it. I'd also like to see if The Office lives up to the potential of its pilot. The three episodes that have since aired have been decent, but the moments of hilarity have too often been separated by stretches of only okay comedy. Still, I'd like to see it find its voice. Man, I sound like Paula Abdul.

For further reading on this subject, check out the USA Today article from April 12th.

What do you think? What are the shows you'd like to see renewed? Which shows should be cancelled?

The Office - It is not supposed to be funny, it is a dark, embarrassing show, and that's why I think it should remain, see where it goes.

Star Trek Enterprise - Great idea for a Star Trek series, just needs better writers and much better actors. Scott Backula sucks as Archer.

Scrubs - A really funny show and a great cast and writers, sure hope that's not on the bubble.

Shows that I hope are on the bubble

24 - Please, please, please kill off Jack Bauer, I can't stand the little side discussions about the characters private lives. For Christ sakes, take it to the terrorists harder, round their asses up and throw them in internment camps.

Extreme Home Make Over - Put together an annoyingly, loud host a sickey sweet, yet boring group of specialist, and turn them loose on one of the ugliest pre fab homes I've ever seen, and you've got this show. Now I do like the premise of this show (take a poor family, and build them a home) but come on. Oh, and don't forget buy crap from Sears, the product placement is sickening, it's like the friggen' Price is Right, I fully expect to hear that crappy 60's music with a silicon enhanced girl doing the hand jive around the kitchen.

Nanny 911 - Please, I can only take so much.

Scrubs has been renewed so we can rest easy on that one. It is a great show. I have also found some moments of humor in The Office. Although I'm one of those who believes it cannot hold a candle to the British version, I wouldn't mind seeing this American version get more time. Eyes is another show that I wish could stick around--it's been amusing so far, with some intriguing characters and lots of attitude.

On the other side of things, there are shows that have been renewed that shouldn't have been. That 70s Show is so far past its prime that it's almost sad for it to go on as such a shadow of its former self. Many sitcoms have that problem, which is why it's good for the cast and producers to end it on their own terms before becoming completely obsolete. Raymond hasn't been as strong the past couple of seasons, but it hasn't been a total wreck, either, so I'm glad they are voluntarily ending it before going too far downhill.

I think it was 2 months ago i stopped watching That 70s Show in favor of Lost. That 70s Show is really getting slow, and has lost its magic. That, and it doesn't seem very 70s anymore. THey can only do so many seasons of a show set in te 70s before time goes so slow.

Third Watch: Right when Cruz showed up, I stopped watching. It just isn't fun anymore. Yokas having yet ANOTHER family issue with her deadbeat husband? Forget it.

With Star Trek being cancelled and Doctor Who coming back, and Starbuck being female, the TV world has truly flipped its lid.

Ya, I use to love That 70's Show but now its like, ok, you're 2 yrs into college and you're still haning out in your parents basement. And isn't it like 1981 now on that show? And Donna can't go from being a mother earth hippie chick to just another fake blonde. I don't get it.

Glad to hear scrubs will be back. I LOVE that show. Another show that I really like though I acknowledge that it's the cheeziest thing on TV is American Dreams. Utter and total cheese but I like it. Not sure why. The office is usually pretty good, but the diversity training episode was one of the funniest things I've seen of any show in a long time. I was screaming with laughter the whole episode.

The worst show that I thought was going to be funny was "committed". I watched it once and was so annoyed by the end I wanted to scream.

Love Arrested Development (also a latecomer fan), disliked Committed. It tried way too hard.

Scrubs = yay!

AFV = yay!

Super Nanny 911 Wife Swap Extreme Makeover = usually yay!

Grey's Anatomy = huh? I find myself liking it; I find myself bored; I find myself wondering why the opening credits look like a chick-lit novel on the table at Borders.

Dr. 90210 = yay!

Gastineau Girls = boo!

I'll shut up now.

Oooh, going on the bubble sounds fun. Can I go??

I agree that Committed shouldn't be renewed. Has anyone heard if Joey is being renewed? It was basically destined to fail--spinning off with a main character is not a good idea. Spin-offs with lesser characters (Frasier, Laverne and Shirley, etc.) can work but Joey was too central to the "parent" show.

I far prefer Eyes to Grey's Anatomy, but Grey's isn't actually bad. It's just been done before. I don't begrudge it the renewal. However, it seems like it's time for ER and Law and Order to be put out to pasture. L&O hasn't been the same without Lenny (although it benefitted from the exit of Serena.) But L&O SVU and now Trial by Jury are still strong from a creative standpoint.

As for reality shows, The Apprentice shouldn't go more than 1 more season, although Trump probably won't have the dignity and smarts to get out soon. It's becoming too repetitive. For some reason though, Survivor, which I thought was repetitive and needed to end several seasons ago, has had a rebirth of sorts and is interesting once again. Go figure. Maybe Mark Burnett shows never die, so The Apprentice could come roaring back. The Bachelor is definitely the most tired and in need of cancelling of the main and once-highly-rated reality shows.

If Fox gets rid of Arrested Development, I swear I will boycott the whole channel. What they should get rid of is that crappy Malcolm in the Middle. The kids are just creepy at this point.

There are so many shows that should be cancelled. Let me name a few:
That 70s Show (just let it go already)
The Bachelor (does anyone even watch this anymore?)
The George Lopez show (by far the worst show out there)
The OC (Shut up, I hate it)
Big Fat Obnoxious "Anything" (just stop)
Life On A Stick (I don't know how this one got as far as it has)
Playing Straight (not out yet but I already hate it)
CSI: New York (2 was more then enough. And this one has bad writing which causes it to have bad acting)

Oh I could go on & on.
There is just so much crap on tv it amazes me the stuff they decide to get rid of, which can be pretty dang good, and then they keep so much of the horrible sitcom poop.

Arrested Development MUST be renewed, it's the funniest show on tv. If for nothing else, it brought us Never Nudes (not to mention Mother Boy and a hilarious Mrs. Doubtfire rip off). And unlike most shows, they're not scared to make undoable changes - they'll cut off your hand and give you a hook!

How could Joey be renewed? I like Matt LeBlanc, wanted it to do well, but it's so forced and painful to watch.

That 70's Show: I heard that Topher Grace (Eric) and Ashton Kutcher (Kelso) are leaving at the end of this season. So, where will the "kids" be hanging out in 1981? Surely not the basement of their friend who's left town?

I hope Jake in Progress gets renewed, it's surprisingly funny most of the time and Patrick cracks me up! For those of you who don't watch, in last week's episode, he had a threesome with a really freaky girl and a mannequin. Hilarious.

Picks:

1. Committed. I'll stick up for this show. It's better than joey any day of the week. Better than Will & Grace. Only so many "ghey" wordplays you can do

2. Wonder Showzen - The most off-the-wall show you've seen. (It's on MTV2).

3. Eyes - I like detective stuff. This one stands. The Kojak revival is not bad(from the 10 minutes I saw of it). I only watch ABC on Wednesdays.

4. The Apprentice(duh)> I thought season 3 was going to be a disappointment(freak show candidates). I thought wrong.

5. Robot Chicken - Funny as all hell. Seth Green's masterpiece. Better than his stint on That 70s Show.

6. Family Guy (revival). This better be good.

7. BSG. I'll give Sci Fi channel credit for this one.

8. Arrested Development - I admit, I watch this show and keep up with the characters.

Is it me, or are the cable networks starting to rise up and cut into the main channels(abc, nbc, cbs, etc) for ratings? I wouldn't be surprised if BSG is getting higher ratings than Enterprise right now.

Shows that are bad and need to be put to pasture:

1. Gastineau Girls - Just bad overall. 2 divas and their misadventures. Like The Simple Life + 20 years.

2. 3rd Watch - The magic is gone.

3. Joey - Magic never started

4. All the ABC sitcoms - not funny

5. AFV - Did someone forget to take this off the schedule?

What about American Dreams? I know it's warm and fuzzy, but I like the actors and the fact that it's one of the few "family" shows out there. Don't get me wrong, I love all of the reality shows, but it'd be nice to keep one show that tries to teach a lesson without being preachy.

FYI - Third Watch has been cancelled.

I forgot to mention a few others in my previous posts about shows that go on way too long. Will and Grace has been telling the same jokes for years yet gets Emmy nominations each year anyway. Ridiculous. The West Wing jumped the shark a couple of seasons back and has lost all semblance of political reality. CSI: Miami is just boring and Caruso and his sunglasses need to give it a rest. The USA Today list of shows that were a lock to come back included some that I thought would be cancelled, like Hope and Grace (who watches it?) and Charmed (it was the weakest of the supernatural shows that started in the mid-to-late 90s so why has it survived the longest?) The ways of tv, they are a mystery!

**Oops, I mean "Hope and Faith." I'm getting the titles of terrible shows with females named after religious concepts mixed up!

"Ya, I use to love That 70's Show but now its like, ok, you're 2 yrs into college and you're still haning out in your parents basement. And isn't it like 1981 now on that show? And Donna can't go from being a mother earth hippie chick to just another fake blonde. I don't get it."

Are they really 2 years into college on this show? It started when I was in 7th grade and now I'm... 2 years into college.

That 70s show has a weird time fluctuation field around it, the same field that keeps the Simpsons kids from aging.

One season had TWO Christmas episodes(assumed to be on different years).

It took roughly a season for Kelsow's kid to be born, which means a whole year has passed. This violates the previous seasons' rules. If it was 1 year/season, we'd well be into that 80s show now.

Time-related events happen only if the plot calls for it(graduation, kids, etc), but all in all, no definite time goes forward.

Next week we'll discuss Donna's sister who only lasted 2 episodes, and was never heard from again. Maybe she ran off with that one missing sibling from Happy Days.

British- And the missing sister from Family Matters!

word Leah and Brittish, so true.

Ashes- one time i was riding the subway downtown and this lady who obviously worked for "hope and faith" in some way was making a big show of reading the script held all up in the air so we would see she as associated with the show in some way. the "oh please" looks she was getting were so awesome. i think the bum asking for money for his toenail fungus operation got more love that day than her.

Arrested Development is seriously the funniest show on television.

If you agree... go to the www.getarrest.com site and sign the pledge.

Check out the Tobias/ David Cross video... it is the greatest thing I have seen in since Lucille got out of rehab

oops...

it is www.getarrested.com

my bad

It's joke that Charmed is still on the air, and Angel is not. Smallville has been a disaster this season (last nights ep was the best of the season). I think it should be a bubble series and probably cancelled, but it's apparently a shoo-in to be renewed.

AD must be renewed. It's the funniest network company. I too was slow to catch on to the series (caught bits and pieces of the first season, never left that big of an impression. Due to praise of the series from a relative, I decided to get caught up over the summer thanks to bittorrent). The outrageousness and wackiness of the show is just hilarious. FOX has the quickest trigger finger of any network, so I would be surprised if they cancelled it, but they are really behind the series, so I have a feeling that it will be re-newed.

I've only scene one ep of The Office so far. I've scene some episodes of the British series, and the US version is not as funny from what I've scene, but I plan to continue watching this series, and I think it should be given a chance to continue.

Tru Calling should be re-newed. Very little chance of this, but it's a very intriguing series. I enjoy it. Zach Galifianakis is great on the show.

What is AFV?

It seems like the networks think nothing of cancelling shows, even when they have nothing to replace them with. Saturday night has become a graveyard of repeats from the previous week; and last week, Fox repeated the same episode of 24 3 times! Yet, they consider cancelling Arrested Development. That makes no sense!

I like Malcolm in the Middle kind of like Scrubs meets the Wonder Years, though the kids are starting to get a little to old. I wonder if they gave Erik Per Sullivan (Dewey) cigarettes to keep him short?

Victoria,

It's short for America's Funniest Videos.

Hope it helped.

I need my AFV to transition from watching abused dogs on Animal Police: Detroit at 6:00 to watching Simpsons/Arrested D. at 8:00! AFV is my "put the Freshchetta in the oven; have some salad; get the ironing out of the way" hour of the weekend. I need it to relax! Don't take it away from me, please God, no!

Random: HA! to David Caruso and his sunglasses. I'm tired of the way he looks off into the distances as he growls out his tired cop-show lines.

Tru Calling needs to go. I think the actress(I don't even know her name) is the worst freakin actress I have ever seen. I even remember watching like 15 minutes of an episode last year and thinking that this stupid show better not get a second season. If any of you haven't seen it, I suggest watching a few minutes one night and have yourself a good laugh, it's ridiculous.

Yourmom, her name is Eliza Dushku but I have never watched the show. It reminds me too much of 'Early Edition', which was on in the late 90's, because of the way she prevents tragedies from happening. I hate copy-cat shows.

Oh yeah, include Joey & Hope & Faith in my list of shows that need to get the boot.

America's Funniest Videos! Good God, is that still on?!

I agree about David Caruso. My favorite line is, "The only one with jurisdiction, is the fire." I laughed hysterically every time they played that commercial.
