FX's Starved Will Leave You Hungry For More - TVgasm

by madeyoulaugh

starvedSo here it is. My one chance. This is my chance to endorse a new show, on a major cable network, and possibly even get a quote in one of their ads. After over a year of writing for TVgasm, I found a new show not only worthy of my support, but one whose theme is so ripe for quotables, I just don't know where to begin. I guess I'll start with the skinny:

This summer, FX is finally beginning to reach out to the comedy genre, and from what I have seen, they are doing so in fine form with the new series Starved.

The press kit for Starved describes the show as a look into "the lives of four thirty-somethings who reside in Brooklyn and are battling various eating disorders." I know, sounds hillarious right? Ok, maybe not...but when we look into a world through writer/director/star Eric Schaeffer's eyes, anything is possible. Though the pilot has more of an indie-film feel, the 2nd and 3rd episodes are an excellent source of ab-crunching laughter. You'll laugh your guts out. I mean, I laughed so hard at Starved, I shit my pants...and lost weight!

Purge all you thought you knew about eating disorders and those who suffer from them. Eric Schaeffer stars as Sam, a compulsive eater/anorexic and high-powered commodities trader. Sam's obsession for food is exceeded only by his obsession with women, and it's with delicious satisfaction that we watch him pinball between the two. He's accompanied by fellow support-group cronies whose struggles with their own demons and insecurities have led to eating disorders. But Starved is not your average comedy regurgitation. While this show's central premise revolves around those comic goldmines of bulimia and anorexia, it might surprise you to learn that Starved is like a Seinfeld for the new millennium, assuming that Jerry, George, Kramer, and Elaine enjoyed a steady diet of laxatives at Monk's diner. The heart and soul of this comedy is the friendship of our four leads who when not struggling with their disorders spend most of their time nitpicking about various mundane details in everyday life -- shoes, pubic shaving, colonics. The typical Brooklyn morning, right?

While the pilot episode may not be the strongest, Starved definitely gets tastier over its second and third shows as Sam delivers more and more bitterly hilarious tirades (one remark about a tan woman at a gym is particularly biting. Because which gym doesn't have an oldish, tan lady in tight clothing?). Basically, I'll just trim the fat and say that Starved seems to be a promising summer comedy. When FX ordered pilots to series, I'm glad they picked up dis order.

Starved premieres Thursday, August 4th at 10 PM EST on FX.

Sounds good, but I'm going to stick to my favorite non-reality show, Whose Line Is It Anyway. They are very funny. You also never know who will be on the show. I've seen Whoopi Goldberg and Josie Lawrence (don't know who she is but she was darn funny) as guest comeidiennes, and I once saw Victoria Fuller before she appeared on the race. Hugh Hefner and two playmates, one of which was Victoria wearing bunny ears, were guests. Wayne Brady and some other guy sang a song about Hugh, making up the words as they went. Then the two playmates came back and did a game where they were the props. For example, if the guys needed a backpack, they'd have to get on their backs in that shape.

A show about eating disorders where 75% of the cast is men? Sounds dumb to me.

um.....are you being paid to promote this? Sounds weak, and what you wrote sounds very Gene Shallit-ish.

Not That There's Anythign Wrong With That.

This is making me completely and utterly furious.
I mean, I don't expect TV to show anything more than utter BS these days anyway (in fact, I don't own one and haven't for 2 years), but just the concept of using eating disorders for laughs is making me want to visit the network's headquarters and strangle a few people.
IT'S NOT BLEEPING FUNNY.
And yes, if it's going to be about eating disorders, don't make 3/4 of the cast men. Blech. Stupid ignorant people on their ever continuing quest for shallow laughs.

PS: You shall be banished to the 9th level of Bad Pun Hell and writhe there for eternity.

MOST REDICULOUS HORRIBLE THING THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE... SUFFERING FROM EATING DISORDERS IN NOT A JOKE AND THEY KILL SO MANY PEOPLE YOU DONT EVEN UNDERSTAND AND TO MAKE IT A COMEDY IS THE WORST THING ANYONE CAN DO... I CANT BELIEVE THIS I AM SOO FURIOUS

As a twenty-something college student recovering from an 8-year struggle with bulimia, I think the idea of this show is absolutely, without a doubt....

...FREAKING AWESOME. Two of the biggest problems I have had with this ED ["eating disorder" for the layfolks] are (a) taking myself too seriously, and (b) failing to see my ED way of life [and I assure you, it IS a way of life] from an objective point of view. And I believe EDs in this show will be portrayed in those lights and not in a scathing or chastising tone.

I think this show will provide something beneficial to everyone -- of course innocent laughs but ALSO a subjective view into one of the most highly secretive and guarded disorders for the uninformed, reinforcement of the recovery mentality for those like myself, and possibly even (dare I say it?) help for those still struggling by giving them that impartial POV I had such a hard time grasping.

Bravo to FX for gripping controversy by the balls and props as well for this review. Thanks for opining truthfully about this show and not taking the scaredy way out by criticizing it simply because you think it probably will offend some out there, even though you felt it nonoffensive.

Here's hoping the naysayers will at least watch the show and form a true individualized opinion (positive or negative) before taking torches and pitchforks to FX headquarters.

Hey, i was watching something else on FX when i saw the Starved commercial came on...it seems like a funny concept. Yes it is about eating disorders, so what. Besides being a little controversial is a good thing, gets people thinking and shows prevelent eating disorders are in our modern society, taking it out of the taboo. Get real people, you have to be able to laugh at ones situation and poke fun at yourself (if you have an eating disorder) a little bit, nothing wrong with good clean humor..not like its derogatory or offensive. Also, I loved the commercials music theme but i couldn't make out any of the words. Sounds like Isaac Hayes or Barry White or something. Checked adtunes.com and got nothing so if anyone happens to know the song please don't be shy and email me. Later all

I think this was a genius consept for a tv show. Im so sick and tired of people thinking that people who suffer from eating disorders are lonley miserable people who are shut out to the world. IM glad theres gonna be somthing that shows the human side of ED"s. And personaly, im glad that 3/4 of that cast are men. More than 10 percent of men in the united states suffer from an eating disorder, and its time that people stop labeling it as a "womens disease". I think it will get people talking and i cant weight!!
(pun intended) : )

I've struggled with anorexia and bulimia for six years. It's been an ugly road, I'm now twenty aaaaand...

OMG I LOVE THIS SHOW.

Yes, they're making light of ED's. Get over it. And yes, 75% of the cast is men and that's okay too, because a LOT more men than you may think have ED's.

The show, at least the first episode, is hilarious and awesome and I highly recommend it.

I found the show to be a rather accurate depiction of human loneliness that having an eating disorder involves, and the quiet desperation that goes with it. And interestingly enough, I found it to be, not at all 'funny' but rather a prime example of art imitating life. For perhaps the first time in history, a television series has captured the incredible pain and fear having an eating disorder involves.

I thought it was a good show. But I'm not sure why they're calling it a comedy. It had funny moments but was mostly sad and dark and a real depiction of what I think an eating disorder probably looks like. I'll watch it again.

ok so I guess i can label miself as an anorexic/compulsive overeater. Still if u saw me u wouldnt even imagine it. The show is just amazing! U may not get it, but for us undergoing all of this stuff is even some sort of like help. Its like watching urself in a mirror. For that one person who claims to be an anorexic near death... don't blaim the show, blaim urself. and no shit it isnt funny, but its what for some reason u once have chosen.
watch the show, ull love it.

Being medically diagnosed with nervosas anorexia and bulimia (at different times, et cetera, you don't care), I was intrigued by the show.

I watched the pilot episode, no knowing what to expect. And it wasn't that hard to understand, really. It wasn't a sitcom about eating disorders. It was a sitcom about people who happen to have eating disorders.

And being a sitcom, I think it fulfilled it's purpose. Sitcom stands for sitautional comedy, meaning it makes comedy out of a situation one wouldn't generally think comedic. (Read: Brady Bunch antics)

The fact that these people have the eggs to do something so controversial and witty just means more props to them for trying something original and successful.

And don't knock it 'till you try it. Seriously, all the people typing with their caps lock button in the on-position need to lighten up and see the show before they spout some bullshit about how wrong it is.

I wanted to dislike this show...really...but it was awesome. A human look at people with several disorders. I really thought it was brilliantly written, acted and filmed!

i commend the writers of this show - it is hilarious & i have an eating disorder - now i can laugh away same

The show is hysterical! I can't wait for the next episode. The people who sent e-mails condemning the show need to get a life! Especially Chris, (Bad Pun Hell) who claims he hasn't had a TV for 2 years. Your e-mail was posted at 6:17 AM, in the morning! If you get up in the morning with such a pissy attitude you need to stay in and not watch TV! And if you were getting home from work at that hour, then to carry that BS around with you until you get home, then you need to see a shrink! It's only a TV show morons! Change the channel to Nickelodian if that puts a smile on your pathetic faces!

What the hell is wrong with some of you? This show is awful. A show that makes fun of people who have a serious problem. An eating disorder is not something to poke fun at. As for the guy named idiot220 thats quite a good name for you. You think that its good to show that eating disorders are prevalent in society by making fun of them? Hum yeah sounds like a great idea! Maybe next we should have a show about alcoholics or drug addicts how about a show about people with cancer! That would be f***ing hilarious! This makes me sick

Look at all the people on this board who have said that they have an eating disorder and enjoy the show because they can relate... hello that is a BAD thing they think hey there even a show about it now. How great lets show these suffering people how common it is for others to have eating disorders so they can just feel ok with continuing on this way until they die!

OMG I love this show so much. I can relate to all the characters in one way or another. I love it. I am an over eater trying to lose weight. I discovered colonics through a book and internet surfing and when I saw the episode with the colonic I was interested to see what it was and I laughed so hard. I haven't done one myself yet.I think i'd need a partner too.

I like this show, it's original and funny. I don't know why you people take things so seriously. I have a friend with an eating disorder and she thinks the show is hilarious. No one is making fun of sick people. These people are quirky characters who just happen to be sick.
I mean, just because someone is sick, does that mean that absolutly nothing humerous occurs in their everyday life?

I am so sick and tired of the ultra PC police. If you don't think it's funny, don't watch it. You rail on your high horse about how "HORRIBLE" it is to make fun of EDs and then when people who actually HAVE EDs tell you they think it's funny, you rail on them!

How dare YOU decide what is and is not humorous for everyone else? Or what they are allowed to post about? Your opinion is yours. Bravo. But apparently others who have EDs don't agree with you. And that's America.

Here's an idea: Push the button on the remote to change the channel when the show is on.

And stop claiming that you speak on behalf of people with EDs. You apparently don't (as shown by the posts above).

I stumbled across this show accidentally last night. As a recovernig anorexic/bulmic for 16 years, I couldn't watch it. I've been in a stable recovery for more than a year now and I'd rather watch other neuroses. (There's plenty to go round) It was too remniscent of the real but portrayed ED people as vain. There are major underlying triggers to the makeup of an ED besides body image. Duh!

I believe this show is funny at times but it is also very on target with it's portrayal of eating disorders and the loneliness, the isolation, the feeling of helplessness. The characters are very complex and I hope this show stays on, it's actually comforting to know that there is show on tv showing this and not just some sitcom making the "problem" disappear after 30 minutes.
