VH1 of the Best New Shows You're Not Watching -
by madeyoulaugh
Every now and again a gem appears where you would least expect it. This time around, it was found in the crap factory that is Vh1.
Vh1 recently began airing Cant Get A Date which I assumed was going to be their venture into Elimidate or 5th Wheel territory. What it actually turns out to be is a very cool show shot in the style of a hybrid of the old "Encyclopedia Britannica Kid" commercials (which is so sad I remember) and those Apple Switch commercials featuring people who are socially awkward or have little luck dating and through a fairly guidance in a non-queer-eye-dr-phil-make-over-type-of-advice find ways around their social ineptitudes and while they don't necessarily "find their mate" they certainly learn a little bit about dating and being more comfortable with who they are.
What’s more, they are re-running it online so in the event your boss isn’t around you can check out the first two or three episodes online here. Then you can come back to TVgasm and tell me how right I am. Also, maybe someone can explain to me why this show is so compelling? All I have been able to figure is I reeeeeeaaaaaaally like the style in which it’s shot.

Caught this show a couple of weeks ago. I was also really surprised at how good it was. I convinced my roommate to also watch it, she was a bit skeptical, but she was also pleasantly surprised

I totally agree. Its a great show. The Q and A by the host and dateless wonder really make the show. Although it has an unfortunate 12 am friday night timeslot, probably due to their key demographic.

My friend made me watch this when I was at his house the other day. I also expected another Elimidate-ish kind of show. I really enjoyed it a lot too and thought the guy with the pee jar was hysterical!

This show is awesome. I think a lot of it does have to do with the way it's shot and that the voiceover and the person on camera actually seem to interact. I think this might be the show that Michael Malice works on...but I'm not sure.

MYL,
Dude, I laughed out loud watching that old Encyclopedia Britannica commercial! Brings back so many memories of watching that pubescent know-it-all during breaks between Press Your Luck and Scrabble. Maybe he'll be the first contestant? ;)

When piss-jar guy told the interviewer that Jenny Dune (sp?) was one of the biggest dorks he knew I started cracking up. You know he meant it in an endearing manner, but she probably wanted to strangle him after watching that clip.

that chick decided to hoke up some majay-jay before making her tv debut for sure.

After I saw the first episode with Morgan, I immediately put this show into my TiVo rotation. I really like it because it feels very interactive. By having the host stay offscreen, you almost feel like the subjects are talking directly to you. I can't quite put my finger on exactly what makes it so great, but it's definitely one of the best new shows on tv.
BTW, BrodysMother (#6), if you watch the after-show interview with Morgan, he says that Jenny Doom broke up with him because he called her a dork all the time.

The people in front of the camera interacting with the bodyless voice weirds me out too. How do they hear him? Sure, we hear him in full clarity, but how do they broadcast it out to the person in front of the camera?
I can't believe this weekend I watched "sweet 16" on MTV. That show shows just how spoiled teenagers can be.

I just watched the episode with morgan. this is great and will be added to my rep of shows. The best is if you watch the outtakes where they are interviewing his lesbian Mom - she is hilarious.

I was also surprised when I saw this show on vh1. I think one of the reasons why it's creating such a buzz is because it seems more like a reality show should be, if that makes sense. This is a dating show that doesn't ridicule or demean the participants, it seems sincere in efforts to help them find love. The participants themselves seem like regular people, not people just interested in getting on tv and acting outrageous.
The host/narrator is participating on the television without pity forums. He explained that he is on-site talking with the participants but then goes back and redubs what he says later. They use a special camera that the participant looks into.
I also really like the format. The show makes it more about personal interactions compared to the exploitation of the characters. The narrator is frank and honest but also provides good advice.
Not a fan of the Friday night time slot.

I have to look up "Cutard." That sounds like a compliment--I'm glad you guys like CGAD and I promise there are many more good shows on the way. See mine again on Wednesday night if you wanna.
(Although you may wanna go to the bathroom during the podiatrist scene).

I have now watched all three episodes and I am totally hooked. I think it works because these are three genuine and nice people who just need a little help. All three are so likeable you want it to work for them - not make fun of them. They are self depricating enough and you want them to stop. And they all have a sense of humor about themselves. Love the way it was shot and love that the host is off camera. Thanks for finding this one. I now have 40 hours of TV to watch per week.

Great show, I'm glad I took the time to watch the episodes online. Hopefully VH1 will have enough sense to bump this up to a more normal timeslot, AND OTHERWISE NOT CHANGE A THING. I'm tired of good things being ruined once they become popular.

I agree ShimmyShea. Sometimes I'm put off when the host talks in a sort of screen-reader tone, but a lot of the advice he gives is absolutely spot on and I wouldn't want to risk losing the good by changing that little thing. I think the major attraction for me is that they try to make personality changes for the better rather than just letting them continue on being "ugh" (for lack of a better word). I also like the interaction between the host and the person in question.
I was grossed out by the Morgan's pee jar and Jim's podiatrist scene (please tell me she put a mask on).
A few other things I was thinking of when I was watching: geeks are better than dorks; rigid ones are easier and funner to play with than floppy ones; and this chaser says, "Round is a shape!"
Also, why shouldn't we model ourselves against Captain America? Leadership? Superior strength and agility? Awesome fighting ability? Resourceful with a shield? Patriotic tights with little wings on the top? C'mon...

I think Captain America is a good role model--the Host was way off on that.

Annoyingly enough, my THREE THOUSAND DOLLAR FUCKING MAC won't allow me to watch this. God- I love my Mac, really I do, but this kind of thing really annoys me. Some DRM issue or something. (it happens with MTV overdrive as well). They say they are working on it- Yeah, WHEN???
