smallville11-10-05bIt's so cliché to apologize for the tardiness of recaps that it has almost become postmodern. In fact does my referencing the postmodernity of the tardiness make this statement inherently more or less postmodern? No matter, it's all a bunch of shit that I probably wouldn't care about it even I was paying somebody to teach it to me (you know who you are). It's also not going to stop me from apologizing for the tardiness of this Smallville post. In fact, if I hadn't started a new job less than a year ago, I would call in sick just to get it to you folks sooner. Alas, I still need to accumulate some days just in case I have an acute case of hangover or a touch of the bird flu. I hope you all understand.

Last week, Lana missed all of the stripper shenanigans because she was on a trip with her astronomy class. Like many said last week, it's not like a lot of us noticed that she was gone. Actually, we just kind of deal with her because Clark is in love with her. On screen, the chemistry is OK, but the sexual tension is not there, or at least is much more palpable with other characters, but at least we have the eye candy.

Lana is back this week doing some astronomy homework. We have always sort of wondered why Lana decided on astronomy, but the answer is kind of obvious. She has always been intrigued by the meteor rocks and the meteor showers on Smallville. The first one killed her parents and she was nearly killed herself in the second one. When she went to Metropolis, she was hoping to learn more about the stars in the sky and all of the objects in space, including those that might be colliding with earth. She is plotting trajectories of meteors, although I am not sure why should we be doing that in her first month at school I read somewhere that standard error for scientists predicting the path of celestial objects is 180,000 miles. Yes, that's right, they have no certainty. That doesn't mean that they don't make pretty little graphs as they are drawn on the screen.

smallville11-10-05aLana hears a knock on her door, and is surprised to see that Clark is there to surprise her with some chow mein. For being part Asian, Lana sure isn't very adventurous with her Chinese food. Clark is sort of surprised that she is surprised because she was the one who sent him the text message with her craving. There was also a package at the door saying it was from Lex. It was a meteor rock, but unlike any that we have seen before. It doesn't glow red or green, but it does cut his finger. Not wanting to take a chance with this meteor rock should it kill him or convince him to marry strange women and nearly have sex with them.

On his way back home, Clark is driving and nearly run off the road by a strange black pickup truck. Clark's truck flips over a few times and by the time he gets out of the wreckage, the other truck is gone. It's almost as if Clark was imagining the whole thing, and he might think he is crazy, but then he gets a phone call with a strange voice on the other end saying "I know who you are".

As we all know, Clark's secret identity is very important to him. Part of the reason that makes him who he is centers around his desire live among a humans even though his Kryptonian birth makes him an exceptional person in almost any physical attribute. Another part of Clark's greatness, however, is the humility and desire to help others that he learned from his parents. It's this dichotomy that has been the focus of a lot of this season so far. When Clark tells his parents about the phone message, they decide to do what they have been doing for a long time, which is lay low and not attract attention. Don't change the routine, but be extra careful.

After the crash, Clark is a little paranoid, and the paranoia builds the next day during his history class. Professor fine is talking about how even the most powerful men can be betrayed, and talks about Judas and Brutus (why do they always leave out Cassius?), but it's not this talk of powerful men falling that is disturbing. Well, at least not as disturbing as the Kryptonite he finds in his bag after the lecture is over, with a slide on the projector that said "I know how to kill you". If that's not enough to get a man worried about his amazing superpowers, I don't know what is.

Now, we all know that Professor Fine is probably going to be shady, and the idea that this latest incident happened in his classroom was enough to cast a little more suspicion his direction, but that is not how Clark saw it. He still believes that Professor Fine speaks the gospel, and when he bumps into Milton and the Professor notices that he isn't looking so well, Clark talks to him about the mysterious black truck. Amazingly, Professor Fine was also almost run off of the road. He doesn't say it was Lex, but who else would have a good reason to attack both Clark and Fine? He even tells Clark that he was able to write down the license plate number, and lets Clark know. More importantly, he tells Clark that "we're in this together".
