There's Nowhere to Run to When Death Becomes You -
by J-Unit
With no good news to tell his parents, Clark goes to Chloe. She knows that he is amazing, but doesn't believe that he can travel in time, and even makes a joke about spinning the earth backwards on its Axis. Don't be so sill Chloe, we know that Clark can't fly yet! Be patient! Eventually, Clark convinces her that yes, he has lived that day again. He tells her that he proposed to Lana and that she died. Although Chloe's reaction to the engagement wasn't quite like it was during the first time around, she doesn't believe that this means they can't be together. Clark is pretty sure that doesn't matter anymore, but he does want to make sure that nothing happens to Lana, so he tells Chloe to stay by her side.
It shouldn't have been hard for Clark and Chloe to keep an eye on Lana, right? Chloe managed to convince Lana to come to the campaign headquarters, and once again, Jonathan wins. Once again, he gets a call. Once again, Lana gets a call. But Clark and Chloe were distracted and couldn't keep track of Lana. For some reason, Lois was upstairs and slipped while she was making toast. I am not sure if that is the reason, but there was a puddle of water, and Clark managed to rescue her before she electrocuted herself.
Lana's visit with Lex is different. She is not engaged, so she isn't happy. She doesn't know Clark's secret, so Lex can't scare her off. OK, let me rephrase that, Lex can still scare her off. When Lex learns that Lana and Clark "had their last fight" he is happy. Finally! He is able to love Lana without any boyfriend or age of consent issues to get in the way. Saying that he will never lie to her, Lex starts to give Lana a deep kiss, but she is not in the mood, and runs off. Realizing that he may have ruined his chances by being drunk and frisky, Lex chases after Lana. They are on the same road, they have the same conversation, and the bus still hits Lana! And she dies!!!
HA! As if. I thought that it would have been perfect irony if Clark worked so hard to protect Lana, and she died anyway. The truth is that Clark was able to get there just in time to grab the back of the bus, once again saving Lana by inches. Once again, she'll never know.
Lana's alive, so how will the universe balance itself? How will fate even the score? Very easily - Jonathan Kent. When Jonathan received his phone call after his win, it was Lionel Luthor. Lionel wanted to start collecting on his campaign donation. Jonathan was not going to let that happen. He meets Lionel in the barn, and says he is going to pay all of his contributions back, but Lionel has more than just campaign money to keep Jonathan in line. He has a photograph that Griff was going to sell Lex, the one that would have destroyed Jonathan's campaign and family. After all of those years of playing nice, Jonathan beats up Lionel, and we think he is just going to keep on going until Lionel is dead, but a heart attack stops Jonathan before he can go any further. He walks outside just in time to see Clark and Martha returning from the party; just enough time to die in their arms.
There you have it. The death of Jonathan Kent. The only question now is how it will change Clark. Although Lana was there to be with Clark at the funeral, he didn't notice she was there, and she left soon after. Lex showed to pay his respects, but dared not get too close. Lionel showed up, and it looks to me like he might want to take care of Martha now that Jonathan was out of the way. As much as I enjoyed the first half of the show, the second half was disappointing. Too often we have to endure when writers want to surprise us with twists, and this was no exception. At least we don't have to deal with the awful Clark and Lana chemistry any longer.
What did you think of the episode? Will Clark or Martha get revenge on Lionel? Is Lex going to be the new Senator, or does Martha inherit the office? Will Clark try his luck with Chloe or another girl? What was in that picture of Lionel's?

Good recap for a crappy episode. Guess we will never get rid of Lana. At least they broke up.

Overall I really liked this episode. I thought the beginning was going to be a dream and was happy to find out that it was not. Then it was a freaking "do over" and he still loses Lana! I thought the funeral was done really well. I got a little choked up. I think the character of Jonathan will be missed. Great recap!

I for one (maybe not one) really hated the episode. Bringing Lana to the Fortress, the diamond out of coal (when did he learn that he could do that?????), Lana's death, the friggin' DO-OVER!, the photo blackmail (didn't he burn the photo Griff gave him?), and then Jonathon's death.
Now, his father's death was a given but they didn't need to build up this episode so much to just kill off a character that was destined to die anyway. Jonathon's death is a major turning point in the Superboy/Superman mythos and should have waited until the end of the series.

NO, NO, A MILLION TIMES NO! I am completely disgusted that they killed Lana and then brought her back. What was up with Lois being passed ou in that puddle of water? That didn't happen the first time. Was it just a means of distracting Clark or does it have some other significance now or in the future? And then Martha telling Clark he wouldn't have been able to choose between Jonathan and Lana anyway-um hello? One of them is your dad an one is some stupid girl you can't even get along with. What exactly is the choice? AAARGH!

I, for one (and I might be the only one?), liked the episode. It wasn’t one of the best, but it was still pretty well done.
After finishing the episode last night, I actually thought how effective the re-do was. All this time, we’ve heard Clark’s relentless whining about how afraid he is of telling Lana the truth. “She’ll be put in so much danger… waaa! Mommy… waaa!! But last night, one pretty believable interpretation of those consequences was presented to us in stone-cold-plain English right before our eyes. There’s finally some weight to his whining. Although frustrating and tiring, I don’t blame Clark for not telling her anything.
Also, I have zero problems with the Lana character. She never dies in the comics, does she? Why would she die here? It was sad to see Pa Kent croak, but everyone has so many heart beats in their lives, and his… wait, Martha already went through that… sorry.

In the comics and movies, Ma & Pa Kent are extremely older. Now, I know this is a hipper network with hipper viewers...and I can live with that. I used to describe "Smallville" to my friends as "Dawson's Creek" with Superboy...BUT...it has become sooooo much more.
1. Lana doesn't die. Evidence...Annette O' Toole who plays Martha played Lana in Movie 3 (or 4)...so she's stil around! LOL!
2. Again, Jonathon's death was a given...so why do it now. Also in the comics & movies, his death transforms Clark to Superman. His inability to help his father pushes him to want to help others. I still think that Lionel's death would have created great drama for all of the characters. Now what, he's going to stalk Martha? I hope that Clark finds out that Jonathon & Lionel were tussling right before J's heart attack. Maybe Clark's "revenge" wil finaly create the rift we need between Clark & Lex.
3. I hate that JorEl is playing such a huge part of Clark's upbringing & choices in life.

Uggghh!! I was so pissed. During the first half, as they were leading up to Lana's death, I was thinking, OMG they're going to do it. They're going to brave and bold and forge a new path for Smallville. I was sad, because Kristen K is hot, abd Lana's nice; but I was glad, because if I'd have to sit through one more—but I love you so much, but I can't tell you the truth. Don't lie to me or goodbye scene, I was ready to slit my throat.
There was a moment, Clark with Lana's blood on his hands; Lana lying helplessly battered; Lex future driven with remorse; that Smallville held real hope—a stark departure from the past. A nothing will be the same now. It had the potential to tell the story of how Clark grows into Clark Kent, Daily Planet reporter and Superman.
I was so ready for it; and then it was snatched away in a disappointing do over. Now where back in all the same old familiar terriority. Clark getting angry, Clark wanting Lana, prehaps Lana wanting Clark but not tolerating the lies; and Chloe suffering thru both of them. (sigh).
They've had some bad episodes, but I can't think of a single one that disappointed me as much as this one.

I have read several reviews regarding the 100th episode of Smallville and the criticism I see most is that the viewer seems cheated somehow. This comes as a surprise to me. Mainly, because from the moment I saw the trailer for Episode 100, I never once believed that they would give that much away. The preview leads us to believe that Lana is the one on the chopping block, and that seemed too obvious for me to believe.
That being said, I am not writing this review to brag about my correct assumptions. I am writing this review to tell the writings of Smallville that they did a great job. Most other reviews agree that the first half of the show was absolutely spectacular. Finally after 5 years we get to see Clark tell Lana everything and watch the grey cloud that has hovered above them for so long vanish. I’m glad we viewers were able to see Clark’s dream since Episode 1 come true. But just when it seems this happy couple might actually live happily ever after, tragedy strikes.
I thought that the way they handled the death of Lana was intense and very well done. Clark’s reaction at the scene of the accident was right on the money. I will, however, admit some disappointment when they decided to let Clark have a “do over. But, like I said before, I was kind of expecting something like that to happen. True, having Lana die for real would have taken the show in a new and exciting direction. However, if you look at this from the writer’s point of view, where you may still have a couple seasons left, I don’t think you want to get rid of Lana just yet. Granted, it would give the show a new direction, but for lack of a better they shouldn’t play all their cards with a season or two potentially waiting in the wings.
It’s kind of like playing Chess; you want to keep the pieces that have the most potential around for when you need them. Not to suggest that Jonathan is nothing but a pawn. John Schneider was excellent and I will miss seeing him on the show. But the truth is, the character of Lana brings more possibility to the table. The writers made the right choice by not killing her off.
Although, I wish Clark would have told her the truth again the second time around. I am kind of glad that he didn’t because if so, it would seem as if though everyone in Smallville knows his secret. From Jonathon’s reaction to Lionel’s picture, it appears that even Lionel knows. If Lana knew too, then the only one left in the dark would be Lex. Heck, no wonder Lex is pissed, almost everybody knows but him.
I was glad to see Clark and Lana happy together, even if it was for a short time. I actually think that having the “do over, shows us how happy they could have potentially been together, which makes the fact that they won’t be together more of a tragedy.
Even before Smallville first aired I was a Superman fan. And I have always been of the thought that Clark/Superman’s “greatest powers, were his mother and father and the moral’s they instilled in him. That is what makes Clark/Superman what he is…a hero. And now that he has lost one of his most valuable assets, it will be interesting to watch Clark move forward and embrace the trials that lie ahead.
Kudos, to the writing staff, I think they are doing a good job, but I too agree that the show does tend to revisit some of the same themes over again. I hope that this seismic shift will thrust the story and its characters into new and exciting heights. Up, up and away!!!!

Victoria (#5): Lois passed out in the water was going to happen the first time (remember how she almost fell off the stool reached for the junk food) but Lana showed up stopped her from falling. This probably just served the purpose of getting Clark out of the room at the party so Lana could slip away but it also goes to show that more then just one thing changed. If Clark had stuck with Lana and not gone to look for Lois she would have been the dead one instead (though you could argue that Jonathan was already on his way to the farm so it would have been both of them but thats not really a helpfull discussion).

Why isn't Lana dead? It would have been the best. I do not care that she never died in the comics or in the movies. That doesn't even matter. Her death would have caused the final breakdown in Clark's and Lex's relationship. It also would have sent Lex spiraling into evil. I think the writers may actually be afraid to go to the point of no return with the Clark/Lex thing.

I remember reading awhile back that the "plan" was to finally end the series with Clark becoming Superman and Lex finally fully-encompassing his dark side. True, they also said they'd never have him fly and other things they've swore not to do...but...
Victoria, I don't understand your hatred for the Lana character but I really think the death of her character would be too much of a change for the already-created mythos. That said, I don't like them introducing The Lois character this early in his life.

Todd, I do not like the way the Lana character has been written the past 2 seasons. And I really don't like the way she is acted. I feel like the show has matured beyond Kristin Kreuk's acting abilities.
As far as them messing with the Superman mythos, I have to agree with them introducing the Lois character so early. I sometimes don't like the way she is written either. A couple seasons ago, Chloe had to start writing using Lois's name as a nom de plume, and I was really hoping that was the direction they were going in with Chloe ending up being Lois Lane. Alas, that was not to be. Sigh.

Whoever wants to get rid of Lana is an idiot. I am sorry if some of u don't agree with me,but Lana is one of the main characters and her and Clark are meant to be no matter what stands in their ways. So this episode was bullshit Clark and Lana should get married not be seperated. BULLSHIT!!!!!!
