Our bored judges are holding pink envelopes, containing Tyra’s ideas of what will make the girls more high fashion. The catch is, you have to decide if you want the make-over before you see the contents of the envelopes.
Names are being called and all the girls are happily accepting pink envelopes and are eager for a change. But when the judges call Maria’s name, she says “hell no!” The look on the other girls’ faces says exactly what I’m thinking.
A little too emphatic, sphincter mouth. You are going home.
All the rest of the girls accept their Tyra ideas until we get to Victoria. She’s debating and starts to say something about, “it might not be who I am”, to which Kelly tells her to shut up and choose. So Victoria goes safe and declines the make-over.
Everyone is thrilled with the plan for their new look, except Destiny who is going to have a shaved head in the back.
Poor girl, when she goes back to her cardboard box, she won’t even have
her hair to keep her warm.
Off the girls go to become beautified, but not Maria and Victoria. Instead they shall get a scolding from Tyra about how models are a blank canvas and every change is temporary, so their unwillingness to participate indicates they aren’t serious about modeling.
Stupid girls – it was a trap!
Tyra also indicates that although she’s not upset with them, she wonders how social media will respond to their unwillingness. As if we care. What Tyra means is that this season she shall appear to be beneficent and will let the arbitrary scores they assign to social media unleash her wrath instead.
Maria doesn’t seemed phased, but I’m pretty sure
Victoria needs to change her undies.
Depresstiny is struggling. Apparently she is bi-sexual but she doesn’t want to look like a lesbian or a little boy. Tyra tries to console her and tell her she’s going to look great.
Remember this image for later.
As if the Tyra scolding wasn’t enough, since Maria shows no remorse for her decision, she also gets a talking to by Kelly. I actually loved Kelly in this situation. She tells Maria that no agency would want to represent an inflexible model just starting out in the industry. Maria retorts with the fact that she already has agency representation. Kelly points out it is a “mosquito” agency with no real impact on the fashion world. She offers to give Maria $10,000 for every national campaign that Maria has already shot. Maria has to admit she hasn’t done any. Score 1 Kelly.
Kelly goes on to ask Maria how she would react if Karl Lagerfeld wanted to give her a bob. Maria laughs and says, “probably if it were Karl Lagerfeld I would let him do it.” Kelly is stunned at the audacity and finally sums up Maria with a brilliant statement.
Harvard Maria: committed to defending mediocrity.
