Nucky calms Chalky and gets him to back down then heads over to Capone to bitch at him for a while and let him know that he needs Chalky and his men. Al thinks he should just take his men and go, then. Nucky, still thinking he’s working with Torrio, actually threatens to tattle on Capone who says the deal’s with him, not Torrio. This only makes Nucky crankier and he asks what a handshake with Capone is worth. This is what knocks the asshole out of him, and he offers to head to the boardwalk to see if they can sniff out Gyp. Eli tells him to watch out for civilians, but clearly Eli can’t tell the future, so Capone tells him he’ll watch out for himself and his men. The rest is Nucky and Eli’s problem. Then Capone gets off some casual racism about getting Chalky’s men to help.
Down at the Artemis Club and it’s completely overrun by Gyp’s men. Tonino’s trying to keep order and telling them to lay off the booze, but the goons whine that with the women gone, there’s nothing for them to do. Tonino suggests they occupy themselves with staying sober so they don’t get taken out but no one listens to Tonino. He still tries to keep order, though, but can’t find any wine. Gyp doesn’t say anything, he just poses with his cigar in his gorgeous muted tea suit. Masseria pipes in that he didn’t come all the way to AC for a drink. Oh, no. This can’t be good.
Gyp tells Tonino to clear out the room but Masseria can barely wait to start busting his balls. Masseria sent 43 of his men to Atlantic City and he only has 31 left. Gyp doesn’t see the problem because he has nine of his own men. Masseria doesn’t really care; he just wants to know why he lost 12 of his own. Gyp non-answers that because he has the Ritz and the casino and Nucky’s warehouse that he’s got everything. Whatever. Masseria points out that he doesn’t have Nucky. Or Rothstein.
Masseria wants to know when he’s going to get more than words. Gyp thinks he’s winning because he’s taking out Nucky’s men. Then he gets off some of his own racism about how half of Nucky’s crew is Chalky’s men. They “can’t even count as whole men.” (Gyp’s words.) Masseria isn’t quite so racist. He understands they’re fighting on Chalky’s home turf so they’re going to fight and hard to keep it.
Plus, Masseria wants to know who the other half of Nucky’s crew is. Of course, Rosetti hasn’t bothered to find out because he thinks it doesn’t matter once they’re dead. Masseria’s over Gyp’s bullshit and tells him everyone dies, but not everyone keeps their promises. Gyp may be bugnut crazy, but he can spot a threat when he hears one and tells Masseria he will keep his. Masseria just goes all Rothstein and fixes the mantel clock then tells Gyp that, “There. Now it’s perfect.” Gyp “knows what time it is.” Then he pats Gyp on the cheek. Gyp looks like he’s about to cry.
