The next morning, Shain thoughtfully wakes everyone up, screaming, shaking tents, and mooning them from the top of a tall boulder. Tyler tells us that you can tell how jealous Cara is that he and Katie shared a tent.
Anna is telling Katie about the party the night before. When Katie is telling Anna about their foray into the Great Outdoors, she says that she and Tyler are officially a Thing. Which is great, because he looks good with his shirt off. Except that it’s possible he’s really stupid. Oh, dear. I feel you, girl. You’re young – just enjoy the sex and break it off if it starts to feel too serious. Trust me on this. He isn’t going to get any smarter. Katie also tells Anna that it has made her really uncomfortable that Cara is always around seeming jealous.
Shain’s dad rolls up to hear about the camping trip and it seems as though Shain forgot to bring home the tent he borrowed. Oh, Shain. What wacky hijinks will you be up to next time?
Episode 10: Ghosts in the Holler
At Shain’s house, his mom tries to have a talk about his future. She says he needs to start thinking about his career and whether or not he wants to have a family. He tells her he’d rather not think; it hurts his brain. At least he’s honest.
The girls are grocery shopping in a sad-looking small market. Anna dares Katie to eat an entire hot pepper, and Katie gets about halfway through the pepper before realizing that yes, it’s really hot, and probably a bad idea. They’re shopping because Cara’s ex-girlfriend is coming to town, and they’re throwing a party. Can’t say I’ve ever thrown a party for an ex before, but okay. Cara is attempting to establish a friendship with her ex.
Anna and Katie are really curious about the mechanics of a lesbian relationship.
The boys are doing their best American Gladiator at a mudhole. Joey gossips to Shain about Cara’s ex-girlfriend coming to town. A misogynistic Shain, rather than being disappointed that he might lose a chance with Cara, confidently tells the other guys that the way he sees it, he gets two chances. Ugh.
Ten times more entertaining than Shain and a hundred times less sexist.
Sevgi (Cara’s ladyfriend) arrives at the girls’ house, and she and Cara have a heartwarming reunion. What’s really sweet is that you can hear their hearts beating as they hug (presumably) over the microphone Cara is wearing. Ashley comes over and tells us she’s excited to have Cara around, because she has never experienced the other side, but she’s bi-curious.
As the party starts, there’s an awkward meeting between Sevgi and Shain, and then Salwa corners Sevgi on whether or not she and Cara will ever get back together. Whoa, Salwa. She just got there a couple hours ago. Give her a minute. But regardless, Sevgi says she hopes to be with Cara, and then Cara comes over and Salwa pushes them into kissing a little bit. As Salwa fawns over them for being cute, Shae, Shain, Tyler, etc all give each other uncomfortable looks.
If you like it, spread it!:

I’ll be honest, as a guy, it embarrassed me to see Shain flirt with Cara. That was just sad. Any hook up that happens between them next week, be it a kiss or sex, is going to be just done out of pity. It’s especially lame because Cara’s far from the most attractive of the bunch.
I also admit that I was stunned to see Shain and his family wearing gloves while making that candy. Even though the promise of seeing Salwa flash her boobs at me wouldn’t convince me to try any of it.
I went from liking Cara in the first episode to hating her in the second. She was just really rude to Sevgi for now real reason. When describing her as the girl in their relationship, she made sure to say that she was emotional and dramatic and she said them in very cruel ways. Sevgi’s better off IMO.
I also vote that we include making Salwa a permanent cast member next season too! Far too little of her in these episodes!
Follow me back Dashley! @ScoglioSpeaks!
Can we just have a reality show with Shain’s family? I’d totally watch a show about Meemaw Gandee’s candy-making business. Najee and Salwa can help too. I love those two. I think they don’t show them as much because all that gorgeousness makes the rest of the cast look bad.
Anyone else wondering why none of the girls have accents while the guys have to have subtitles? As a Southerner, I call bullshit on the authenticity of the chicks – the guys, however, are like every fella I went to high school with. Tots agree on the Shain fam show – much more authentic than what these chicks are dising out.
I might be totally wrong, but I really don’t think Cara went out with Sevgi. I think that is a story she came up with for the show thinking it would get her more screen time. It was more like childhood friends and one of them had to move away. I did not sense any romantic feelings between them, even if it was in the past. Their whole discussion of who was the girl vs guy seemed very scripted and rehearsed.
Overall, this show is not that bad. I would feel differently if they only showed one episode per week. It is also one of the most scripted ‘reality’ shows on MTV I have seen in a long time. Burying money in the yard while your two friends are there, oh and a whole tv crew? Um, even Shane is smarter than that. I do think a lot of the stuff Shane’s family does is true. They are hilarious. Maybe MTV will take a page out of TLCs book and give the Gandee’s their own show like TLC did for Honey Boo-Boo.
The one thing that has impressed me with this show is the 3D words/chapter titles. They are pretty cool. I know it is basically a new program MTV bought, but you can tell they put some time into it.
I am so damn enthralled with these kids. How in the fuck do you forget to take your tent from the camp site?
Loved the party the girls had when everyone else went camping. Good for you Anna, you deserve a man you are so awesome. And Najee cooks – steak no less. Yummy
S-Natch I wonder if the girls aren’t more educated than the boys and learned to “lose” their accents. I can hear a slight accent in Anna’s voice.
Cara was being a typical man in the relationship. She is so stupid she doesn’t see she is taking her anger for Tyler out on her ex?
Damn season is over next week. I think they are going to do another season since their ratings have been going up.
S-Natch: Cara (I think) is the one that goes to WVU, right? Do we know for sure that she’s actually from WV? A lot of my friends went to school there and they have a pretty large out-of-state attendance (and internationals too). She could be from somewhere else, but has lived in WV attending college for the past couple of years. I’m not sure about the other girls though. The rest of the girls had that house in South Charleston in the first episode. If they’re from the city, that may explain the less obvious accent as well. The boys obviously live in the country, so their accent would be stronger.
I dunno what it is about rednecks but they always make a fascinating watch. And of course add the familiar reality formula of a mix of horny attractive coeds and now all of a sudden I’m hooked…plus I’m learning new vocabulary every day.
Also I thought it was great they played the song “Caged Animals” by Ambassadors when Katie and Tyler go to sleep in their tent and the girls mess with them, because that song sort of describes this show..and probably how Tyler felt in the tent!
