This week’s scene is much more believable than last week’s. The deception isn’t nearly as large, and the reaction is much larger. Lee is an actual person who hasn’t been very straightforward, not just the creation of a troubled teen on her laptop. And yet Trina is much more hurt than Sunny seemed to be. She’s really disappointed.
Nev drives Trina over to her friend’s house, reminding her all the way that it could have been much worse. Oh Nev. We’re not all so anxious to befriend the crazies. Trina’s friend is all sweet, wanting to hear the whole story. Trina lists all the ways that Lee was lying. The age, the kids, he didn’t have a six pack, he’s not in shape, he’s not athletic at all and he’s not 6’ 1”. I’m starting to see Trina’s priorities here. She wonders how she never knew he was lying. My theory is she didn’t want to know. I think that’s the deal in most of these cases. These people are terrified of finding out this wonderful fantasy isn’t true. So they believe that the other person doesn’t know how to skype or is always out of town. That way they can put off the disappointment of finding out the truth. Her friend wonders if maybe Trina can see past his looks if she was really so into this guy. Trina is doubtful. But she agrees to talk to him again.
The next day Trina puts on her blonde curly hair and heads over to talk to Lee again. She ponders on the one-of-a-kind friendship she has with Lee. They meet at a park – neutral territory.
Trina: “So… any chance Scorpio will be in DC anytime soon?”
They have a friendly chat about the situation and Trina asks Lee why he didn’t give her THIS version of himself. He says he got caught up, which I’m sure is true. But I think we can probably guess that Trina wouldn’t have paid much attention to Lee without the Scorpio pictures. I mean, she seemed more disappointed in his HEIGHT than in the fact that he lied about his children. I’m certainly not saying that this is Trina’s fault (entirely). I’m just wondering if maybe she hasn’t passed up some nice guys in the past because of her appearance requirements. Lee says he’d like another chance with Trina and she says she’s relieved to discover that his personality is genuine. She tells him she’s still mad, so he has a lot of work to do. But she doesn’t want to lose his friendship. Yeah, no one wants to lose the friendship of the person who has easily lied to them about various things for an entire year. They hug and I guess they’ve made Nev’s day because they say they’re going to be friends. He makes them all pose for a picture.
Our update tonight is only one month later, so really what are they going to tell us? Well, Lee has stopped posing as Scorpio, he’s not in a relationship and he still talks to Trina a couple of times a week. He hopes that their romance can blossom again. Trina’s not dating anyone either, but she HAS stopped stripping. Right. Why now? But she learned a lot from this experience and yadda, yadda yadda. Time for the three-way skype with the REAL Scorpio. When he comes onscreen Trina gets all flustered and messes with her hair. He’s polite and flattered.
Scorpio: “You have excellent taste, lady.”
If you like it, spread it!:

Man, I love this show! I watched the movie when MTV aired it a couple of weeks ago and was fascinated! In this episode, I had the same question as you, which was why hadn’t Trina noticed the blog entry signed by Larry, the real Scorpio, and along with that, why hadn’t she seen all the other pictures. But then Lee mentioned that supposedly the real Scorpio had asked him to set up a page to see how women reacted to him, and that was the page Trina found him through. So it sounds like she never saw the real Scorpio page.
I’m really curious if they actually find someone at some point who really is who they say they are.
I love this show. The docu was so cringeworthy that i knew Nev wouldn’t fail me… i just don’t understand people… if you’re online enough to meet someone, why aren’t you googling and searching for every morsel of info too? I “research” people just for fun… I look at mugshots as a stress reliever… but in this story, the three pics only was the tipping point… she lost any credibility with me when she accepted 3 pics as “proof of life”.
I saw the movie this weekend. Nev’s willingness to risk by sharing the sexting won me over. Totally embarrassing but he rolled with it.
If they had a \Catfish Network\ and ran these 24/7 I would watch.
No one online is exactly who they say they are, so if you tread lightly and never take it too seriously, you won’t get hurt.
I’m more concerned about the previews for next week. It’s one thing to not meet for a year, which is way too long obviously, but that girl waiting TEN years. Too much crazy for me to unpack.
I have a confession. My real name is not Molly.
I thought “Trina the Natural” was a cute girl, but she needs to STAY AWAY from the black lipstick. Girl put it down and walk away
She’s cute though, I wish her lots of love, and hopefully she finds a good man.
Also, I totally thought “Scorpio” photoshopped Chris Brown’s face onto his body, especially the bottom pic on the first page!
This was a good episode, I really like this show. And I LOVE they contacted the real Scorpio!!!! that was a good twist.
I can’t emphasize enough that I feel like this show would have made so much more sense 15 years ago when the internet was new. In this day and age, a legit person over the internet wouldn’t need a tv documentary crew to meet in person. Also, these “wide-eyed and innocent” subjects who are duped all claim to have seen Catfish, so……they’re aware of the essence of the movie, right? It’s about deception. They have to have SOME idea who they’re talking to most likely isn’t really who they’re talking to.
Oh man, there I go using that jaded logic again.
Also, love the “friendship patrol” caption. Nev rubs me the wrong way. He portrays himself as the bleeding-heart type that would judge you for not wanting to befriend the…….person with a personality disorder who misled you for a significant amount of time.
Trina looks like a very messed up Whitney in that last screen shot. Goodness. I see a future contestant on VH1s Tough Love.
Judgy do you think they volunteer to be on the show since they are well aware of what Catfish is about? It is a new generation of stupid.
No argument that this is a new generation of stupid.
But in the opening credits of every episode Nev states the whole idea behind the TV show was his email blowing up from people who could just relate to his story SO much. And in reading the initial contact from “Trina the Natural” he reads out loud (apparently in her words) that she, indeed, also saw his movie and relates to it.
So yeah. We’re at least being led to believe these people are aware of what Catfish is about.
in 1996, I met a guy on AOL, he lived about 45 min from me. He said he had played in the NFL until a knee injury. he said he was 280 pounds, in shape, etc….We met at LoneStar Steakhouse one night. He was every bit of 400 pounds, bald , ugly as hell! at least i got a free meal out of it!
Trina was pretty adorable! You could tell her priorities were a little messed up though. And there is no way she suddenly stopped stripping.
Also so funny about Nev and friendship. I thought I wouldnt like this show bc it is the \man and his camera\ format but the stories are good! Still not into Nev and his camera though. Just not my format.
I probably shouldn’t admit this, but I have Divorce Court on in the background right now and just noticed that the male plaintiff is a large, jolly, self-proclaimed comedian named Phillip \Lee\ Avent. Divorce Court. His supposed wife claimed one of the huge problems in their relationship was her seeing damning messages from other women on his phone (\I miss you,\ \I love you\) and the ending claimed that his \modeling agency was really taking off\. HA!! Oh the webs we weave. Lee because his deceptions seem neverending and me because I apparently watch so much trashy TV that it starts to overlap.
lee is cute and I live in DC…he should have hollered lol.
