Dance Moms Recap: The Replacements

Previously on Dance Moms: Kelly left and the moms insisted she would NOT come crawling back; Jabby held auditions to replace Brooke and Paige; new girl Ally and her mom Shelly joined the team.

For the second week in a row, we open in the parking lot.

Next week we hold out for a rest stop

The moms greet one another and note that Shelly and Ally are not there. Christi surmises that they scared them away. Oh Christi, you’re not that scary. Shrill says maybe Ally is having a private, while Christi suggests maybe Shelly is cleaning Jabby’s bathroom. Nah, Shrill already took care of that.

Christi says they are a team and the team should include Kelly, not Shelly. Well, Shelly rhymes with Kelly, doesn’t that count for anything? She mumbles something about Kelly having left for a reason and that they should try to convince her to come back. Holly says without Kelly, there is a void and they need to take a stand. Yeah. Because if you don’t fight for your friend’s right to storm off in anger every week and then return the next day like nothing happened, nobody will.

Jabby and Gia are working at the front desk when the moms walk in and go straight into the ladies’ room.

Peep or poop?

Jabby agrees that they are acting suspiciously, even for them. We hear the moms through the bathroom door agree to give Jabby the silent treatment. I don’t understand why they had to have this particular summit in the bathroom, but whatever.

When they come out, Jabby tries to make small talk, but the moms ignore her.

I guess it’s later and Jabby is looking all over for the girls so she can do the pyramid. Nobody is around. Jabby says if the moms are trying to piss her off, they’ve accomplished their mission. Jabby calls Melissa’s cell phone to see what the hell is going on and says that if they are doing this because of Kelly, they are nuts. She says Melissa is especially nuts because Maddie and Mackenzie need her and need to dance.

Jabby says the moms are trying to make a point, but the show must go on. There is a competition this weekend in Fort Wayne, Indiana and she will just work with the girls who are here. Hi Ally!

You win the prize for being the only person here

Upstairs, Shelly’s sitting there forlorn. She goes downstairs to see what’s happening. Jabby says she doesn’t know what the moms’ beef is, but they’re crazy and they can go scratch. Jabby asks Ally if the moms or kids told her anything, but they didn’t. Jabby rants that just because Kelly doesn’t want to come back, that shouldn’t affect her girls’ ability to come to class. If Brooke really wanted to dance, she could make her dad drive her or a neighbor. Because who wouldn’t relish the opportunity to ferry their neighbor’s kid around to dance class.

Thanks for the recap. As much as I would LOVE for Sophia to be a permanent cast member on the show, I know she only stays for maybe one more episode. It would be fun to watch Christi and Melissa having a complete nervous breakdown because their kids aren’t in the same league as Sophia– but hey, who is? She’s amazing! It would especially be fun to see Melissa as she is so used to having Maddie be the “star” and getting all the special attention and favors from Abby, but that’s not to be.. Maybe just one episode of it.

This whole episode was so odd. There must have been a whole lot they left out, or their “real” protest was about something entirely different because it makes no sense to protest your friend leaving..? What’s up with that? Kelly leaving isn’t Abby’s fault? Do they seriously expect Abby to go and beg forgiveness from Kelly? There is NO WAY in hell that would ever happen, so the “protest” makes absolutely no sense..

Also, I thought Abby’s group dance should have won. They danced beautifully and were much better than Yvette’s team. I can’t judge Ally because I didn’t see who beat her in the teen division, but she is a very lovely and talented dancer, AND seems to have a good and sensible mom. The 2 other girls looked like beautiful dancers from what we saw. I think Abby was definitely correct when she said she now had a better team than the original team, but unfortunately we all know it was just a one time gig.. Too bad!

I agree – the protest made no sense. They should have parked in Kelly’s driveway and protested her! She’s the one that left! I think it was just all scripted as a way to get some new kids in there.

I wish Sophia would stay too just to knock Maddie down a few notches. It would be good for Maddie and fun to watch. Win win!

Great recap! One thing that bothered me about this episode was how Abby kept saying that it’s her name on the line and she’ll show the other moms that her studio is great without their kids, yet instead of using dancers FROM HER OWN STUDIO she just calls in kids whose technique and abilities Abby is not responsible in the least. She brought in a bunch of ringers which is just a tacky thing to do.

@ Jazzy: I don’t get what you mean about knocking Maddie down a few pegs? All of the girls seem really sweet and support each other no matter what. Has she had bratty moments, sure, but what 8-12 year old girl hasn’t? I do think that she’s a “pleaser” and want’s to make everyone happy, so she does what asked of her without question.

I disagree about Thrive. That was a good number and I thought it looked better than Jabby’s. It had more dancers in it but they were all perfectly in sync and it was fresh and energetic and I really liked their costumes. They had all the little details from makeup to hair the same. They probably worked on that number all Summer instead of two days like Jabby.

@KRB – Maddie does seem like a nice kid, but I do think she thinks she’s the greatest dancer ever. I think it will be a rude awakening when she grows up and finds out that she’s not the absolute best. It would be better for her to have some real competition now. That’s why I said it would be good for her.

Oh and I meant to say that Sloppy Stripper is the best description of that dance!! Nailed it!!

i personally loved thrives group number, i loved the song too& studios use “guest” performers from other studios quite often, its not like abbys taking credit for training them, by them dancing under “her name” just means that she made the choreography for the numbers. Sophia wins all the time, every where she goes , she is also an amazing tapper, she is also home schooled and spends many many hours dancing. I do think it would be fun to watch melissa and christi get all in a tizzy bc everyone knows sophia always wins & bc abby is fawning over her . It will deff make for good entertainment, people have been commenting on sophias youtube videos since dance moms started requesting a maddie sophia show off. In my opinion, maddie , chloe, sophia and mia diaz (dance moms miami) are the toughest competitors around right now. Im not sure if Mia still competes tho, her mother has been parading her all around LA like a show dog. Im not sure she is even still at stars.

At least SOME part of the protest was real. I know I posted this in the minicap but I definitely remember seeing it play out on twitter. I definitely don’t think it was about Kelly tho (but she did stay out of the twitter war). The moms kept tweeting cryptic things about “the truth” “karma” “having faith” and “wanting what’s best of their kids” but wouldn’t say what any of it was really about. Abby’s response to all of this was that they were being unprofessional and holding up production. SGWWGS took screen shots of all of the tweets about this which can be seen here. http://www.straightguyswhowatchgayshows.com/2012/10/22/the-beginning-of-the-end-for-dance-moms/

Because the boycott part of this is real, I do think that is the reason why they added so much random things in this episode like Hadley’s performance, the mall performance, and Jill going to Candy Apples was because they needed enough footage to fill up the whole hour time slot.

Don’t forget Autumn Miller. She is also a very popular young competition dancer and youtube star. I am not sure if she is dancing competively anymore though because she might be considered a professional since she was in commercials and some other things she might have been paid for. Not sure.

Okay you know this was obviously preplanned just looking at the costumes. They just happened to have a set of costumes with each one a coordinating color in the girl’s sizes? yeah right. Plus the marquee welcoming them. So this was obviously something they were planning on doing ahead of time.

For the non dancers out there, getting costumes takes a long time in most instances. We ordered ours in Sept or earlier and did not get them till like Feb or later if you order from costume companies. If you have them made, it takes time too. Those were fairly simple costumes so they could have been made quickly, but doubtful. A lot of studios have a costume closet where they keep on hand old costumes to use in a pinch but you most likely would not have an infinite coordinating in all sizes selection.

Am I the only one who was cringing when Hadley did her solo. I thought it was sloppy choreography (Not to mention inappropriate but what ever. This is Dance Moms where inappropriateness thrives) and ugh. If she had better choreography it would have been more tolerable to watch.
Also, about this whole pay raise thing, according to their tweets, they all say they want what’s best for their kids. They got along fine before the show (except Abby but she’s not the one who went on strike) so i don’t know why they need this extra money. It kind of makes sense for Holly since she quit her job but still.

I can maybe understand home schooling for an Olympic athlete, but to be a dancer??? That is wrong on so many levels.

On a lighter note, I totally thought of Tiffani when they said they were going to perform in a mall haha. The famewhore cross out had me on the floor as well. Keep up the good work! I liked Thrive’s group number…at least it was something different than the same old ALDC lyrical number and I didn’t feel that Abby’s new group was put together well in the way of height and maturity matching. I’m sad Shelly is leaving b/c she was the only somewhat normal mom on the show! Plus, her daughter was a beautiful dancer. It shows how much I can’t stand Abby now by the fact that I was rooting for Hadley to do well, when I disliked that kid and especially her mother on AUDC!

April, all the costumes at ALDC have to be made by a seamstress. They are not run of the mill costume catalog costumes. Normally they would take time to make, but look at DWTS and all the rhinestones that they have to put on those costumes in a short period of time on top of making them.

@SnoopK8 Thanks for making such a funny recap. Plus 2Inspirational Quotes!

“..if you don’t fight for your friend’s right to storm off in anger every week and then return the next day like nothing happened, nobody will..”

and “..If you whore it, they will come..”
went straight into my Thoughtful Life Lessons file.

Brooke sure is getting pretty. But I wish she’d stay away. She’d already started having back problems last yr. From people that specialize in Starbooty dance trying to turn her into a contortionist.

Know who else I wish would stay away? My alter ego Preachy McJudgington. She won’t shut up about how there’s places where they have special schools for that. And ways to tell which kids can keep on doing it on into their teens and even grown up yrs. And which 1s will just end up having health damage from it. Even into their old age.

Preachy’s right. But what she should be doing is reminding me that I’m a big fat hypocrite. For being so against putting kids on reality shows. But watching this 1 anyway.

And then typing my old fashioned, unpositive and grouchy opinions on the internet.

I already ranted about Sophia even being on this show in the minicap. But what you said about her being a reality check for the girls and the moms both got me to thinking.

You ought to be right. But we know they’ve all seen her youtube in real life. I bet she’s no more of a reality check to them than Quvenzhane Wallis is. This whole episode we didn’t hear word 1 about how Chloe wobbled doing that penché. Not even from Jabby.

Sophia’s not a reality check for them because it’s a whole different performance category than what they’re doing. Even though her mom puts her on tv shows and all over the internet too.

Something that I found very odd and interesting was the fact that during our girls’ dance at the mall, their formation (who is up front/in back) was EXACTLY THE SAME as it always is when they are dancing at a competition with Jabby. Maddie, Chloe, and Brooke (Maddie especially) seemed to always be up front and in the center. Holly and Kelly always complain about Paige and Nia being in the back or never being “featured” in dances, so why not take the opportunity to change things up a bit while Jabby is not ruling supreme over them for a week? Just something that was bothering me and making me wonder.

@Hayley– Well, I would assume that even Kelly and Holly realize that their kids are NOT the strongest dancers and would be ridiculous to put them in the front. Maybe if they did a few tricks, but then went to the back, but to be up front the whole dance would not make sense. Nia and Paige are good at acro, as is MacKenzie and Brooke, and I guess also Kendall. The best DANCERS are definitely Chloe and Maddie and I’m sure the moms know that, even though they complain and I’m sure would like their kids featured more..

it upsets me how fake this show has become . i know most reality shows are scripted, but in the beginning this one seemed so real, so i was actually upset to find out it wasnt real. Lifetime needs to be m0re careful with their editing, the marquee sign was a big mess up. I always notice how they re use the interview clips, they often play the same ones for different parts of the show. They must have a lack of footage, because theyve been using interview clips from last season , this season. Its particularly obvious when they use old clips of jill and mackenzie, because mackenzie is little and maturing, so the ones of her from last season are obvious, & jill well obviously because of the hair.

I’ve got another pet peeve I forgot to rant about. And some important science advice to whoever styles the girls:

Bow giantness does not stop time

It doesn’t matter how big a set of bows you put on a kid’s head. Once their face starts getting its own tween look nobody in the world’s going to think they’re still 7.

McKenzie’s right around the age the other girls were in season 1. If we saw her in the street without her Dance Moms hair we wouldn’t recognize her.

If she did a meet and greet by herself she wouldn’t need any security. Just wait till they get to the place to fix her hair in those pre school pigponies and stick those damn Mutant Bows That Ate New York on.

It’s bad enough when they try to keep professional kids stuck in time. But Dance Moms is a reality show. People love these little girls to bits. They want to see them grow up.

And quit making McKenzie do the same little hop skippy bumble bee spitting rainbow daisy dance as when she was 6. With a couple of extra tumbling moves.

It’s so not fair to McKenzie. That you can tell’s really improved. And it’d look way better for Jabby’s precious reputation she’s always hollering about. To give her 1 of her little trademark quinceañera dances the other girls get.

If they feel like they need a tiny tot in there, then get 1. Lord know’s there’s not a shortage on. Jabby doesn’t have a problem calling up every tween in the world. Call up some 6 yr girls too.
And Free McKenzie from tv time warp!

the aldc is the first studio ive heard of that has a seamstress to custom make all their costumes. We sometimes had costumes custom made, if we couldnt find something right for the dance or if it was a specialty dance or something, but never did our teacher sketch up every costume, we used the typical costume catalog, then once they came in the moms made alterations, and added rhinestones and everything else we needed. Maybe i never heard of the sketching & seamstress crap bc all the studios in my area are amateur compared to these girls, the competition we used to go to was the performing arts alliance competition in king of prussia, right outside of philly. Its a 3 day long competiton, each day starts at 6:30 am and ends as late as 1 am, studios bring ALL their groups solos trios and modeling numbers. Thursday is modeling,& singing the kids model in formal wear, swim wear, lounge wear (pajamas), sports wear, and novelty. Its like a natural pageant, no glitz stuff. Friday is for solos , duos (another thing, we call it duo around here not duet, i guess its the same thing tho) , and trios. Then saturday is groups & Sunday is a like 6 hour award ceremony. They have division winners then overall title winners. They also have a photogenic category. The dance style is a llittle different , if anyone has every been to that competition, you know what i mean. The dances arent as technical as you would see at a starpower comp. The dance categories are tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, hip hop, TV(impersonating a commercial), ballet, pointe, pantomime, novelty, baton twirling , acro and production. I may have missed some ? They have lines and groups ( groups are less or equal to i think maybe 8 people? ) and lines have 8 or more . They hold 3 competitions a year one memorial day weekend, one in november, and then the top 3 from each category and age group get called back to compete at the champion comp. in january . I competed from 3 to 19 at the competition it was always a fun time !

I would SO LOVE to see Maddie compete against Sophia!! Figures that Abby would put in her sacrificial lamb Chloe instead of Maddie. Of course Sophia will beat Chloe (just like she would beat Maddie), but this way Abby can hold on to her illusion that Maddie is still “the best,” or at least she won’t have to have her little favorite go on national T.V. and get her butt whipped. I am so sick of Abby treating Chloe like crap! Whatever anyone thinks of Christi– please don’t take it out on Chloe!! That just pisses me off to no end.

Because if it was simply that they were mad at abby, they would have screamed at her, &caused a scene. And the moms didnt even have the kids there for pyramid, they didnt want the kids being filmed until they got their pay raise! The girls do not get paid, bc then they couldnt compete, but the moms get paid, the show is called dance “moms” ! I think once people on these shows start demanding pay raises etc., they should be replaced. It’s reality tv allegedly….and once the whole fame thing goes to their head they stop being real and start playing for the cameras….even how the mothers dress drastically changed as the cameras stuck around…it happens on all the reality shows and it makes me crazy. There are thousands of little girl dancers out there and once the moms become divas about not showing up and/or demanding pay raises I would replace each one of them if I were the producers rather than be held hostage.

  41. 41

I would’ve loved to see Sophia dance with them. Not so much as a competition just to watch them together. But only if we could go back in time and put them all in the same regular class.

Setting them to compete now wouldn’t be fair to the Dance Moms kids. No offense to any of them or their fans. It’s just they haven’t had the same kind of classes. Or the same amount. Specially since the show started.

So we don’t know what Chloe and Maddie would be like if they’d had the same training Sophia’s had. Or what Sophia’d be like if she’d spent even just the last 3 yrs doing the show and taking from Jabby.

Guess what you guys!? I just found a dance studio that is kinda far from us but does give free lessons to boys. As many as they want to take. It is a competitive studio too. They seem to mostly do local competitions but they place very well at them. I talked to the owner and she was super excited I might be bringing my twin 5 year olds to hip-hop class and she suggested the tumbling class too for them. They have a tap that night too. So yeah….we are going to try it out.

One of my sons will probably not be into it very much. I will try but he already says he does not want to do it. My other son though who is my outgoing son was giddy about getting to dance and was excited. He is also into singing and acting. So yeah, I might be at Starbooty in a couple years if they decide they want to dance and compete and are good at it. It does run in their blood since their Mommy was a competitive dancer.

The owner says they really want to get boys to dance. I know teachers go giddy if they can have a boy to compete with them because it ups scores. I will have to let you guys know how it goes.

kind of O/T, BUUUUUTTTTT . . . i was annoyed that Abby called 911 to get the moms out of her parking lot. last time i checked, a small congregation of middle-aged suburban housewives sitting in cars eating SweeTarts doesn’t constitute a life-threatening emergency. if you have a trespassing issue and need people removed from your property, as long as they are unarmed and not a threat to other people, the appropriate thing to do is call the local police department, NOT 911.

i feel like a stick-in-the-mud complaining about this, and i know the dispatcher probably assessed that it wasn’t a true emergency and followed up accordingly, but it still irritates me that 911 staff and police had to be bothered, and had their time, energy and resources wasted with such petty manufactured bullshit high-school drama, when there are people with REAL problems that need emergency help from police and first responders.

i thought it was common sense that 911 is to be used only for serious emergencies, not trivial nonsense like this. Abby’s calling 911 in this case was ignorant, vain, selfish, entitled and irresponsible. maybe i’m taking it all too seriously, but i hope that call and the scene with the cops were staged. it’s just too obnoxious!
