Dance Moms Recap: The Road to NATIONALS

Previously: The group number came in first at iHollywood. Justice beat Chloe because Melissa wouldn’t let Maddie to a solo. Paige broke her foot.

The girls line up in a studio somewhere in the bowels of Los Angeles. Chloe tells us they are actually at Millennium studios, where Christina Aguilera and Brit Brit Spears rehearse. You can smell the skank in the air. Jabby says that last week they were not focused at iHollywood and we get a flashback of Jabby screaming at them all. But the group came in first. Doesn’t that count for anything? Not in Jabby World, I guess.

So remember last week when those random people named Kaya/AKA Black Patsy and her daughter Nicaya showed up? Yeah, they are nowhere to be found.

Black Patsy, we hardly knew ye

Did they even really exist? Jabby comments that the girls were nice and friendly to Nicaya, but the moms weren’t so nice her mom. Um, if I recall correctly, Kaya/AKA Black Patsy was a little bit confrontational, no? Jabby says that the moms have run off yet another potential student. What happened to that crack strategy of bringing in someone new to win NATIONALS?

Pyramid time. Kendall has finally clawed her way back onto the team and gets the opportunity to be on the bottom of the pyramid. Way to go, Kendall. Paige is next because she did very well last week despite being a gimp. Brooke is next because she didn’t finish in time. Sounds like a personal problem. Then we have Maddie, who just blended in when should have stood out.

Second row, we have Nia. Jabby says her music and choreography were difficult, but she handled it well. She also needs to step up her technique. Then Chloe because she made the top five. Now she just has to be consistent and not get beaten by creepy red-headed kids. Finally, on top of the pyramid, we have Mackenzie who came in third overall in her division. Go Mack!

WTF with the hair, Mackenzie?

This week, they will remain in L.A. and attend an Intensity competition. (I refuse to spell it “IN10SITY.”) Each girl, except Maddie (!), is getting a solo and their performances will determine who is competing at NATIONALS next week. Yay, NATIONALS. NATIONALS mean there are only 17 more episodes left of this season. (I was joking when I wrote that, but apparently I’m not that far off.)

Poor no-solo Maddie is upset and crying because of course she wants to do a solo. Shoulda thought of that three weeks ago, Maddie. Melissa signals from across the room for Maddie to raise her hand and ask for a solo. Jabby says she’s not trying to hurt Maddie’s feelings, but there are a bunch of kids who want to do solos. To Melissa, Jabby says that she is the one who ruined it for Maddie.

Sorry, Maddie. It’s not the first time your mom’s poor lifestyle choices have affected you and probably not the last.

I haven’t watched from the very beginning but last night I found an early episode on Youtube–Vivi and MacKenzie danced a duet (and poor Vivi sucked IMO. Free Vivi!). Anyway, the moms were upstairs rhinestone-ing (I’m sorry–Swarovski crystal-ing) costumes and Jabby said something to the camera along the lines of they needed to get jobs and only come to the studio to drop off and pick up their kids.
Now I thought that Dr. Holly took her sabbatical bc Jabby insists on all the moms being there for all the lessons.

Thank God they did not show any more footage of Brooke’s “singing”. That was painful. She has a sweet little voice that would go nicely in a school choir but is no pop singer!!
Also so glad that Kaya is gone!!! I hope they never come back.
Yes, Mackenzie DOES do the same routine every week. I would love to see her do a different routine, one without any side arials or acro.

Did you guys see Abby has a new show starting in October? Cabby’s Ultimate Dance something or other. It looks like Robin (?) From the Pussycat Dolls is on too.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Brooke looks more like she could be Abby’s daughter than Kelly’s? They have the same shape face and same coloring…. Abby must have looked a lot like Brooke as a teenager. I think Abby is a very pretty lady. Until she opens her mouth!!

haha Frizzy-maybe Brooke is Jabby’s daughter! Maybe Abby didn’t want to give up her career to raise Brooke so she gave her to Kelly and that is why there is all that drama between them!

Maybe I’m the only one, but I thought MacKenzie looked adorable in her pigtails.. I mean, she IS only 8! Is 8 supposed to be too old for that nowadays? When I was little, well I guess I should say when I was 8, a lot of other 8 year olds wore pigtails to school everyday. It’s not like she’s 12 and they are trying to force her into being a little girl- she IS a little girl. I guess i just don’t understand all the fuss about an 8 year old wearing pigtails. Let her be a little girl! She won’t be able to do that much longer, but at 8 years old it seems pretty acceptable, and cute, to wear them. Now, when it comes to Kendall.. I think Kendall is tall for her age. She’s 9, almost 10 (I think), but unlike Maddie, Brooke and MacKenzie who are all of short stature, Kendall is tall. I saw a family pic of her and her mom and dad and her dad is VERY tall, so I’m thinking she may be taking after him. I think they try to make Kendall look TOO mature. She’s only 9. They put on all this make-up, put a lips costume on her chest in her last dance (which I thought was inappropriate for a 9 year old), and she just looks older than her true age. Let kids be kids. They aren’t going to be able to get away with it for much longer, let them be kids while they can is my feeling.

I do agree with you about Brooke’s singing.. But, I think a lot of them out there that are “in the singing biz” can’t sing either. They do so much to change the sound, that it doesn’t even sound like them at all anyway. It’s cute and was nice seeing her having fun with the other little girls, but yeah, I’m not seeing a bit future in music world.. I liked what Kelly said about it. Something along the lines of, “they had a great day” or something like that, which showed she wasn’t pushing for her daughter to get famous or be a break-out music star, but the fact that they had a fun day making a video and recording a song- even if nothing comes of it- is fine, because they had a great day, had fun doing it and will be a good memory for them all to cherish. I liked that. Kelly needs more moments like this. Poor lady looks like she’s on the verge of a nervous breakdown every episode.

When Maddie was dancing in the street during the video, she still managed to make that same face she ALWAYS makes, while starring at her foot.

Reminds me of the movie Zoolander, making the same face but with a different meaning.

Omg I can’t believe how much Nia stands out in the group number! She’s 2 counts behind, and her technique is really bad! I’m a big Nia fan, but I never noticed how much she stands out!

Great recap. I also enjoyed seeing everyone get along. Or at least more so than usual. My favorite part of the episode was Paige going for the high five and getting left hanging.

I don’t see problem with Mack’s ponytails, she’s 8 not 12. I wore ponytails until I hit Middle School, with bow, ribbons, barrettes, and ballies! Who didn’t know Maddie was getting a sole…com’on really? Someone mentioned this before, but why are they always so damn dressed up? Dance class(for my daughter) on my day off means jeans and a shirt(maybe even a T-shirt), hair probably pulled back. Brook looked so mature(not in a bad way) this week and shows she really shouldn’t be with the ‘little’ girls anymore. Kendall looked mature as well, but not in a good way since she is a little girl. Blah blah blah Maddie and Mack did the same dances this week as always. I wasn’t all that impressed with my girl Chloe this week. I don’t know how or when it happened but Paige has really grown on me, I love her smile. You have to give the girl credit she never cried until her dancing was over, during practice and at the competition. Nia, Nia, Nia…her faces were awesome(looking at you Maddie), but her dance not so much.

Nia has improved a lot. She used to always be behind or watching the other girls for the moves in the first season. Now I don’t notice it as much. I also noticed her legs not as straight and stuff like that. She is much better and really did deserve that most improved award. She still needs to keep working hard to improve technique.

I just feel that Chloe is losing some of her drive. That or she is too damn anxious all the time and it comes across on stage. She does not look happy on her face when she dances much anymore to me. Not like how she used to. Makes me sad.

I wish they would let Mack try a lyrical type number instead of always just acro or jazz or character type numbers. She needs to work on her technique too and the only way to do that is to work with it.

The choreo for Nia was just not very difficult which probably got her a lower score. It was cute though. I think they judge you on costume, choreography, difficultly, personality and technique with them being equally weighted. At least that was how I remembered it. If there were ties they chose who had the higher difficulty score to tie break. We won 1st overall that way one competition. It was a tie between us and another group and our difficulty score was higher so we won over them. Woot for a tap number taking 1st overall with all the wings and graboffs and fast footwork and toe stands!

@Moli & @Dani- I didn’t have a problem with Mac’s pigtails… not the actual pigtails themselves anyway. She is a little kid, she should be allowed to dress her age (Although with the pounds of make-up caked on her face, it seems like a huge contradiction, but that’s another issue). It was those freaking bows ON the pigtails that bugged me…. they were so big, her head looked like a birthday present. Not quite sure why that bugged me, but it did. I don’t know, my pigtails were always falling down or I’d lose a ducky barrette from one of them. I wish they’d take the make-up off the kids for rehearsal. I was expecting to see mascara running down Maddie’s cheeks when Abby told her she originally did not have a solo.

@April- I was thinking the same thing about Chloe. I think she has beaten herself up to do well each time on stage that she’s lost that glow. I remember back to her “Dream on a Star” solo and how much she seemed to be in love with dancing then…. but then again, she’s been emotionally and psychologically dragged through the ringer on this show… Even Christi ragging on Chloe in this last episode about “You have to do well in the group number!” was shocking. Or maybe she’s just tired- 28 espisodes= 28 weeks…. half a year of this would drive anyone crazy.

Mackenzie is adorable, I think the ponytails are age- appropriate and I even liked the ginormous bows. She almost reminded me of a little Russian girl, they way many of them wear those huge poofy bows.
Every one of these girls is so pretty, you can tell they each will grow up to be really beautiful. I wish they’d lay off all the makeup too in practice! It’s kind of icky.
Kelly’s orange and black dress in the first few scenes looked like it was inspired by a basketball.
Yes, I’d LOVE to see Mackenzie do a lyrical piece…anything besides sassy acro! Sheesh.

So I wanted to know more about kaya and I found this on facebook on the dance moms page.
    1st post:
“Annie Rue Uncensored: Believe it or not, I’m Kaya from Dance Moms (had to change my name on FB because people started sending me msgs after the show aired). Funny how opinionated you are when you’ve never done a reality show. But I was the same way before I did it. I can’t speak for other shows…but THIS one is NOT scripted! The producers “encourage” drama & conflict, but they never tell us what to say. How can you people be so damn judgemental when you saw less than an hour of me & my daughter? I was with these psycho moms for more than 2 weeks….of course I was pushed to my breaking point! They did one hell of a job editing….it shocked me too! You didn’t see how I was called dykes, black bitches (while Holly sat back & watched), how Kelly threw a costume at my daughter, how Abby called my daughter too muscular (screwing wih her self esteem & body image). As a parent, how would YOU react? I do NOT work for the show. I did nit audition for the show (if u knw so much about dance moms…u knw that dnt hold casting calls or auditions). I was contacted by the show because my kid CAN dance!”

    2nd Post:
“Annie Rue Uncensored: Race IS an issue….the moms commented about my daughter’s hair & and why she wore braids. I told them that her hair is an afro when it’s not braided because I do not straighten her hair. Holly let them bully her into taking NIa’s braids out & straightening her hair. Google my daughter….any competition photos you see of her, she’s wearing braids because her studio understands & accepts that her hair is different).”

    3rd Post:
“Annie Rue Uncensored Heather…you really believe I walked into a strange studio and had an immediate attiude? Please! I was interrogated for quite some time by those crazy women (except Melissa) before I got an attitude. But thanks to editing….you saw me walk in with an attitude. Oh I CAN Be a bitch with major tude when it comes to my kids! But I was honored to be selected for the show so I didn’t walk in there with one. No matter how much I justify my actions/behavior….some of you cult like dance mom fans will hate me no matter what. You act just like the moms on the show…unwelcoming of newcomers. I can only attribute it to envy. My child got an opportunity that thousands of dancers WISH they had….she performed on national tv (however short it was). Look at how many kids watch the show…..they WISH they could do what Nini did. Haters.”

    Last post:
“Annie Rue Uncensored: Thank you Fawne, Alyssa , and Jacqueline! I know I need to stay off these dance mom blogs because they just piss me off..but I can’t help it. It amazes me how narrow minded & judgemental people can be. I supposed I have to post pics of my degree & letters from UMSL showing how many times I’ve made he Dean’s list. I dnt have a doctorate…but I am far from ignorant & uneducated. I just don’t “sound white”. That appears to be the issue. Funny how they didn’t air when Holly bragged about being from the Bronx…but aired what I said! When I confronted Christie, Jill & Kelly came to her defense because she was there “sista” (even though they all talk trash to each other…they stuck together when one was threatened). Excuse me for expecting the same from Holly….especially when I was called a Black Bitch! Did anyone notice how long the paused was when Christie told me to sit my ass down ? It’s because she actually said “Sit your BLACK ass down”. I didn’t start with the race issue….they did. F#ck all of you who have something bad to say. My kid CAN dance. You didn’t see enough of her to judge that. So what if she can’t do acro. Most professional dancers do NOT flip around & contort themselves. They DANCE! When we went to a dance convention in Hollywood…MY daughter (and Nia, believe it or not) were the only 2 that could dance! The other girls went unnoticed! They could tumble…but not dance. Haters….”

People’s post got really out of control after this.

Kaya should have stopped while she was ahead. One or two respectful comments to clarify? Have at it! We understand. Three? How much free time do you have? Four, getting riled up and grasping onto people who agreed with you? Come on, now it’s just getting pathetic!

Seriously, she can’t possibly expect to get away with saying she didn’t understand that these moms will attack with the least provocation (or that jumping in and trying to get your kid to dance with the group before nationals, producer encouraged or not, counts as provocation). It’s not the first season.
