Time for judgment! Guest host Daisy Fuentes walks out and I can see dollar signs flashing in Jordan’s eyes. “I’ve got a great candle line you can sell at Kohl’s!” I’m just happy to see Vern and Genevieve walk out on camera. It’s a Trading Spaces reunion!
The Great Room by Luca and Danielle
This room is a hit, but just about every feature liked in the room is something Danielle chose or designed and Luca just ‘made it happen’. I personally love this room, and I know all four of my cats would enjoy hours of coating every surface with hair.
The Den by Hilari and Rachel
The team loves the moose head (really?), the table (agreed), and the sofa choice (yup). The molding is just silly, with the television accenting how bad the molding is and I’m gratified to see the design team concurring. Why didn’t they just do some vertical lines of molding to balance the moose head monolith?
The Design Studio by Yuki and Stanley
That dark chair is embarrassed to be in this room. Ugly, ugly, ugly! I love me some green, heck I’m wearing Citron and Forest Green together right now, but this green is horrid! Then you add the stupid ‘collage’, the orange couch, and by the time my eye reaches the metal sculpture I’ve got a migraine.
Vern says it best “I’m trying to make this wall color go away by closing my eyes but I can still see it.” Amen.
Bedroom by Miera and Jordan
Vern likes the Chevron painting, and I re-evaluate my perception of Vern’s taste. The room looks more like a Greek fantasy suite at the Settle Inn than a professionally designed bedroom to me.
Bedroom by Michel and Britany
Genevieve also enjoys the lattice work detail (it’s on the wall behind the camera in this shot), but no one mentions the strange draping over the beds or the ugly yellow-white striped bedspreads. Yuck. I love the Evil Genius chair, though.
Master Bedroom by Kris and Bex
This is one way to keep any designers from fighting over bed assignment in the Master suite I guess. Genevieve points out the bad choice in paint color, Vern mentions the awkward day bed design and Daisy is blinded by the naked light flaming though the Big Dipper.
I hate the wall color, silly little table, use of gaff tape, draperies, daybed design, stripes on the fireplace and even the purple coffee table. I kind of like the black and white pillows. There, I said something positive.
Judgment Time:
Both of the standard bedrooms are safe. Britany, Michel, Miera and Jordan are all relieved to walk out of the ‘Evaluation Studio’. Danielle’s design elements in the ‘Great Room’ make it a favorite, but pissy Luca is very self-justifying and defensive about his lack of design contribution to the room. LOVE IT! Yuki and Stanley’s Design Studio is next, and the only positives in the room are the choice of flooring (Yuki) and ugly metallic art piece (Stanley). No one likes the ugly collage (Yuki, but should be Stanley too) and wall colors (all Yuki).
In the Den, the judges are all smiles for Rachel’s contributions (moose and coffee table) but call out the ridiculous in Hilari’s molding/TV wall mount decision. Fortunately for her, they love the couch Hilari chose. The Master of Disaster Bedroom is called out for a clunky daybed (Bex) and hideous wall color (Kris) but is praised for the artwork.
Congrats Rachel! Bye Yuki!

House Hunters had a special episode where they had to select (i.e. rent) the Design Star house. The other two houses were really cool.
i’m so glad you guys are recapping this show. it’s kind of ridiculous, but i love david and vern, so i’m in. i have to say i liked yuki’s orange couch and the striped floor. but the rest was just awful. i actually wish both yuki and stanley would have gone.
Stanley, Luca, Bex and Kris get on my nerves.
Stanley because he tries so hard, Luca because he’s not a designer and refuses to accept it, Bex because she’s an irritating pushover and Kris because he’s the one doing the pushing even though his ideas suck. Plus he kisses butt like there’s no tomorrow.
Danielle is my favorite because she’s competent, pretty, and I love her design aesthetic. I hope she wins. I also like Miera and Hilari, but more because they have cute personalities. Rachel is okay too.
Yuki was fully up out of her mind with that room and it’s a good thing she went home. I feel bad for the remaining designers who are trapped in the house with that monstrosity though. I bet they treat that place like The Chamber of Secrets and never ever open the door. Which is sad because it’s supposed to be where they can chill and get inspiration and what not and now it’s ruined. Thanks alot, Yuki.
I need to send Vern Yip an invitation to come live in the magical house that I own with Latrice Royale, Chad Michaels, Bruno Tonioli, and Tim Gunn.
@CannedGinger, in the future, would it be possible to include more pictures of the contestants? If someone doesn’t watch the show but reads the recaps, it might help them visualize the scenes better and differentiate between people if the contestants were introduced with face pictures.
But besides that, great recap and I hope the personal issues are resolved soon!!
The Design Studio is what you’d get if a planeful of Muppets crashed.
