The judges seem to like the story telling, but don’t really buy the ‘perfect’ side of the room.
Jordan
Congrats, Jordan. You’ve managed to make a design on this show that is something I feel qualified to make. It might not get you far in the design world, but makes me feel better. As far as the judges go Genevieve loved the splash of red on the grey background. Plus you’ve made Vern feel hungry for egg rolls. Maybe you have a future in designing pop-up Chinese fast food holes?
Miera
My first thought: it’s grey, orange and white instead of blue, orange and white! She’s going to town! It’s a meh.
Genevieve seems surprised at how much she likes the room. Ice points out the shitty ‘art’ work on the back wall. I think more time to spackle over the screw holes and touch up paint would improve the look.
Michel
This is my second favorite look. I love what he did with the wood to make it interesting, and the carpet isn’t too bland either. Why not do something to those two end tables though?
Vern loves the rope features but Genevieve doesn’t like how plain it is.
Stanley
I liked the invention, but it just reminds me of a cheap art installation. You know the type you see in an art museum and feel like someone was just ripped off? I’ll call it ‘Room with a Couch’. Maybe it is an advertisement for a new rich benefactor. The judges are just overwhelmed with joy at the novelty of a room which takes the concept of room with a couch to an extreme.
Danielle
This room was nice, but I feel like it’s in the basement of an NFL fan or something. Just not my taste, I guess. Vern loves how the ‘X’ in the room is off centered and wrapping around the walls. Vanilla Ice wants to get the band back together.
Luca
Bleh. The floor looks ridiculous, the plants are in appropriate containers but the whole room feels like those old Maxell ads with the man blown away in his chair. The light fixture is so bright and garish that I can’t look at it when lit, so it’s not functional.
Vern hates every single accessory, and those accessories are all the hundreds of projects Luca worked on. Oops! The only high point is the signature thrown on the wall at the last minute.
Judgment Time:
Britney, Michel, Miera, Kris and Bex were all middle of the road and are safe for the week. Danielle is lauded for her great eye contact and approachability in the camera test. While her room is praised for movement in the wall design, it is criticized for the use of a cheap floor lamp. Luca and Hilari are both criticized for their designs.
Luca loves constructive criticism. You can see it in his happy face and crossed arms.
Speaking of approachable, Rachel is next. She’s praised for her patterns and camera skills but criticized for the accessorizing. If someone should be condemned for creepy owls, why not Kris?
We’re cute!
Jordan is rightfully given the smack-down for buying a ton of stuff and painting it. No surprise there. Stanley’s room is given a huge reach-around for being homage to interior while using light to paint and turning the sofa into a sculpture. Think he has the win for the week? Not so fast! His camera challenge is so bad; Vanilla Ice comes off as a hosting legend.
Congrats Rachel! Buh bye Jordan! I hope that candle collection goes well. Too bad you didn’t make it to next week when you could rebrand as the Kardashian Kandle Kollection and pitch to Mama Jenner!
If you like it, spread it!:

Was totally confused by vanilla ice AND threw up a little in my mouth when he said “if you got a problem, you gotta solve it.” those aren’t the lyrics! I was expecting a “go ninja, go ninja, go” on Jordan’s room, but noooooo.
Great recap!!!!!
I have given up on this show..the White Room challange is so stupid..and the only designer I ever liked was David..maybe Megan ( Palm Beach Style) ..but the rest..YUCK..I think it is time for HGTV to get rid of this show in its line~up….put in more selling NYC and LA and please get rid of all the House Hunters..way too much air time…I used to loved Michael Paine..Designing for the Sexes…now that was good and useful..he had great ideas!
PS I do not think I am alone in stating this show is old and needs to go..notice I am only the 2nd poster and I did not even watch the show..just saw it in recaps ..so I wanted to comment
^ I still like it. But I never watch the winners’ shows and only watch Design Star because it gives me one more opportunity to judge people that I don’t know, which is my favorite thing to do.
So maybe you’re right.
I agree though that this white box challenge was lame as hell. What part of “the room does not have to be functional” did these people not understand? They could have done whatever they wanted in there, and most of them just did what they do every day. And the people who did do something kind of different had some hackneyed (Kris), tacky (Jordan), or just unattractive (Stanley) rooms. Last year’s white box challenge was way better.
