Personally, I thought it was cute, but it seemed a bit jerky to me. I don’t really know anything about dance, so I could be completely wrong. Let’s see what the real judges have to say! Bruno says something about princesses. Can I please get a translator for him? He says that they need a little more definition in the style. Carrie Ann disagrees with Bruno a bit. She explains that American dance tends to have a little less tradition and a little more style. Len thinks that Shawn is a great dancer, but he is “a cup of tea in a world of lattes.” He didn’t think there was enough foxtrot in the dance. The audience boos, because that’s probably what they’re paid to do.
Brooke interviews Shawn about her recent knee injury. Apparently the doctor told her she could do everything except gymnastics. That’s a pretty specific thing for a doctor to say. What type of injury only affects someone while they are doing gymnastics?
Scores: Carrie Ann – 8 Len – 6.5 Bruno – 7.5 22/30 Those were all over the place! At least Len is back to being the mean one on the panel.
Up now is Sabrina Bryan and Louis van Amstel dancing the cha-cha. How did a Cheetah Girl get voted on the show over the two of the most charismatic contestants they’ve ever had (Kyle Massey and Carson Kressley)? I call bullshit on that vote. Sabrina tells us that she’s on the show to prove that she shouldn’t have been eliminated so early in her original season.
Based on that dance alone, Sabrina should go pretty far. Carrie Ann thinks that Sabrina came back with a fire under her butt and kicked the dance’s booty. However, Carrie Ann thinks that it was over danced…whatever that means. Len compares the dance to a hammer’s impact. Bruno stands up and flails around a lot. He just agrees with everyone else. Brooke asks Sabrina if she’s going to do anything different this season to ensure she doesn’t go home so soon. Shut up, Brooke. Sabrina had no control over how people voted. There really was nothing she could have done short of paying them off!
Scores: Carrie Ann – 7.5 Len – 7.5 Bruno – 7.5 22.5/30
Hélio Castroneves and Chelsie Hightower are dancing the foxtrot next. The way Hélio talks about himself, you would think the only reason he is a star is because he won a season of “DWTS.” Apparently, he does nothing else. Yes, I know he’s a race car driver. However, he only really mentions that in passing.
Sweetie, you’re too excited about this show.
I love that Hélio is in a tuxedo. There is just something about ballroom dancing that makes me think that the men should be in tuxes unless there is a definite theme to the dance. According to Tom, Hélio got a standing ovation before he even started dancing. Len thought it was good, but there was just some little things that need to be fixed. Bruno basically agrees. He says Hélio is charming, but he had a few missteps. Carrie Ann just wants to see a little more body contact. This is where her climb up the mountain of horny begins.

All I can say is thank God for my DVR. I skipped about 1 hour and 53 minutes of the result show! Seriously, 2 hours??!! This just might be my last season to watch, I think this show has reached an end. Oh, and I agree about Bruno, WTF is he saying? And have an orgasm already so you can stay in your seat and talk like a normal person.
Okay, how much do the producers hate Mark that of his three partners that came back he got stuck with Bristol? I was certain he’d be dancing with Sabrina again since they were the team that was robbed, but she got an upgrade to Louis while he’s stuck with Bristol.
The Derek/Shawn score makes complete sense knowing it was Derek. Carrie Ann and Bruno never really criticize him when he just choreographs whatever the hell he wants because he hates the foxtrot. So they seal clap and overscore him while Len is all “Where was the partnering? Why weren’t you dancing in hold? Why do you do this every season? Why are your eyes on the side of your head?” and gets booed because he’s the only one who knows what a foxtrot is.
Len will downgrade a score based on choreography, especially if the choreographer is Maks or Derek, to keep them from doing whatever they want. So Shawn wasn’t given the 6.5, Derek was.
I don’t doubt that Sabrina was fairly voted back because it was so SCANDALOUS!!!1! when she got the boot. Kyle made the finals and Carson, while funny, is better suited to host than dance, so I can believe that people invested enough in DWTS would vote for her over them. But Sabrina does have the tendency to hit everything at 11. There’s no subtlety to her dancing but I think with such a strong foundation and Louis instead of Mark as her partner she’ll learn to rein it in.
And Val’s right. Most people thought Kelly was Stompy the Wonderhorse in the first season and they staged a “dance off” so that the “rightful winner” John O’Hurley could win. She was pretty awful but she seemed more terrified than anything else. I’m glad she did well this time around. Not going to win again, but not going to embarrass herself.

Just like you have an aversion to Karina – I fucking HATE Mark BaldASS. He is such a condecending whiney snot who feels he is entitled to just make the finals. He continously over-dances any partner he has – Mark we already know you are the pro no need to compete with your own partner. While he has been burdened with Bristol – make no mistake about it he is no martyr as he knows the Tea Party will push Bristol to the end even if she takes a steaming shit on the dancefloor. So Boo Hoo Mark you got your free ride to the finale. Agree the comparing Shawn to Brissle the scoring was redic.
Is Pam Anderson drunk or on some type of medication? Val is a douche – who flirts and insults all in one sentence.
I am pulling for Melissa and Tony – neither has won and Tony has been at this forever. Go team Melony!!

@Vallegirl and Iona: I don’t really hate Sabrina as much as it may seem. I just pull for Carson because he’s from my hometown. I do think that Sabrina is a better dancer than both Kyle and Carson.
@Frizzypop: I can’t imagine what an actual Bruno-gasm looks like. I imagine there is lots of flailing.
@considerthis: Whenever I dislike someone on a reality show, I try to remind myself that I’m only seeing one side of him/her. However, I saw Karina on an episode of “Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta” and I still wanted to punch her in the face. I don’t know if she’s had any plastic surgery, but she REALLY looks like she has had a A LOT of work done. She doesn’t look natural at all.
Also, “Team Melony” makes me giggle. I’m pulling for Kirstie and Maks just because I adore her!

There is something so engaging about Apolo and Helio, They really look happy to be dancing and I really like watching them. Thanks for posting the links to the individual dances. I stopped watching this show a couple of seasons ago but I like being able to see the 2 or 3 people who interest me. I enjoy the recaps, too.

@ash310: I agree with you about Apolo and Helio. They don’t seem to be taking this too seriously and, as a result, you don’t see any nerves in their dances.
Thanks for reading! I figured the videos of the dances would be easier since it’s hard to get good screen caps in this show.

I figured there was no way Sabrina and Mark were dancing together again. They became a couple and dated for a while after the show. Considering they aren’t together anymore, I can imagine it would be incredibly awkward to be paired again.

Bristol Palin has to go next. She just does not belong.
Agree with the Mark Balls hate….he preens all the time. I can’t stand him.
…and they better give Tristan a good partner in the spring. He is the new king of sexy on this show and deserves better than being stuck dragging the old broads across the floor.

@Iona Trailer I hate to break it to you, but you better get used to Bristol, she’s going to be around for a while. Her “being in jeopardy” is crap; it was purely a ploy to get her fans to vote more. The producers want her around as long as possible because she’s awful and controversy equals ratings.

Sorry to nitpick, but the blonde in the picture above Val isn’t Chelsie. Chelsie has blue eyes. I’m not surprised Val didn’t know what General Hospital is. I doubt he watches soap operas. Kelly wasn’t all that great the first time she was on. She shouldn’t have won. Stompy indeed.
Agree with the anti-Mark sentiment, followed closely by Derek. They both overdance their partners, and way overdo the facial expressions. I must be in the minority, because I like Karina. She was so robbed the season that she partnered Mario Lopez. I was hoping they’d bring back Stacey Keibler to dance with Tony.
And yes, now that Carrie Ann is single, she’ll be drooling over all the guys. It was bad enough when she was getting some regularly, but now she might even outperv Bruno.
I saw an interview about SYTYCD wherein the contestant said the producers could override viewer votes until the final, and I’ll bet this show does the same thing. Unfortunately, Bristol will likely stick around for a while regardless.
I like Karina, too, and agree she should have won with Mario. He’s doing grand jete’s and getting ripped a new one because he “broke hold” in a waltz or something while Emmitt, and I say this as a diehard Gator fan, just kind of moseyed around the floor and shook his ass and was called “twinkletoes.”
It’s why I stopped questioning why some great dancers can’t catch breaks while other marginal ones are swooned over. At least Karina won with JR.

I am on a mission to get a reality show as a marginal character that is breakout STAR and is so wildly popular that Dancing with the Stars cannot help but to have me on which I would do with the provision that I dance with Tristian.
Fine.
But I’m really on a double secret mission to ogle Max as much as I can.

First time commenter. Read somewhere that Ballas would have no other partner than Bristol. No fan of the Palins, but appreciate that she is willing to go out there and do something that would terrify me. Good on her for getting out there, especially with Ballast for a partner. Don’t like the family, or their politics, but she is just a kid.

I just take issue with her being considered a “star.” At least the others on the show were stars in some way at some point. Bristol seems like she is a very nice person, but she was on this show in the first place because of who she was related to, not because of anything she did.
And I don’t blame Mark for wanting to dance with her. She’s controversial and, as a result, ratings gold. She’ll get a lot of votes just like she did before. Honestly, I won’t even be surprised if she makes it to the finals again.

@Iona: I did not realize that! I just googled it and was kind of amazed by what I saw (not in a good way). Well, I take back my statement about her probably being a nice person.
I felt sorry for Bristol having to go through her unplanned pregnancy during the 2008 election because that had to be difficult. But in the four years since, she’s shown she’s cut from her mother’s cloth, if any of her comments are to be believed. She’s prickly, has a persecution complex even though she pursued her own reality TV show that caused her to get harassed out of Saddle Ranch, and isn’t afraid to put her bigotry in writing on Facebook.
She may be 21, but that’s a year older than Shawn Johnson. She may be controversial and she may have the “tea partiers” but you don’t become an awful middle-aged woman like her mom without first being an awful young woman like Bristol. I wish they’d brought back Mel B instead.
Oops. Didn’t see the last two comments before I posted. Not trying to fan any flames.

I FF through Bristol. Just not interested in her, and I really don’t care for Mark. Ditto to previous comments about him – the constant showboating just gets on my nerves. Louis and Kelly were fantastic! He really brought her out and helped her to get through her nerves. I thought she was great on that show and he knew just how to work with her. I did not vote for fan favorite because I could not choose between Kyle and Carson, and I’m afraid you are all correct in thinking Bristol will hang in just like last time because of who she is, not how well she dances. Even the judges were getting pissed last time around because better dancers were being voted out before her. We’ll see! Thanks for recapping!

Great recap! I think you could have mentioned a couple (but just a couple) of cute/awkward/funny moments in the results show part, and the recap would have been that much better. Overall though, great job, I was thoroughly entertained.
I want to agree with those who like Helio and Apolo. They’re just great fun to watch, and they both look like they’re having a great time too.
@wcsdancer – I agree with every word you wrote:

Mark & Derek both scream ‘FAKE’ to me. Their technique is flawless, but their smug looks and attitude are really a turnoff. It’s really unfortunate for their partners that I always want to see Mark and Derek go more than I want to see their partners stay.
With respect to Karina, I thought she was robbed of a win with Mario. I thought Mario was CLEARLY a better dancer than Emmitt (and I loved Emmitt too, I was happy with his win, but come on!!!!!!) and I was overjoyed when she won with JR. The dance that they performed on “emotional week”, when all the stars danced to a song that had personal meaning, was just mesmerizing. I was moved to tears the first time I watched it, and Karina was absolutely breathtaking. With that said, I agree with the poster who said there’s something off-putting about her. While her dancing is phenomenal, I can’t wholeheartedly root for her, even when she and her partner are clearly the best.
And I also agree that Stacey Keibler should have come back. She had such grace and she was just lovely to watch.
Louis is kind of like Karina for me. He’s very good at his job, I think he’s a great teacher and coach, I don’t think Kelly Osbourne would have done nearly as well with a different partner on her season, but there’s just something about him that I don’t like. I don’t know why, I want to wholeheartedly like him but I cant’. With that said, I think that Sabrina will do better with him than she did with Mark. I think Louis is MUCH better at showcasing his partner’s talent than Mark.
I don’t have a favorite yet, I’m just so glad it looks like it’s going to be a great season!!

OMG! I love you and I love your recap!!! I was worried who Flipit was going to get to do the show this season. It’s my favorite, besides Big Brother of course, but this one I can just sit back, relax and enjoy! You are the icing on the cake!
The season opener put my mind on overload. There was too much too soon for me. The men are apparently my favorites. Seeing Helio gliding across the floor gracefully performing the Foxtrot, then Gilles comes out and makes me swoon! Joey and Apolo are also fantastic. I wasn’t surprised to see Drew in the bottom 2. He didn’t impress me at all. As for Emmitt… I think his score was over-bloated…. like he is.
The 2-hr results show was a bit over the top and I’m hoping that it was only for this 1st week. I didn’t mind the fillers that much. I always FF the music acts. Thank God for the DVR!
I can’t wait til next week’s show and then your next recaps! Oh…. and I totally agree with you about Karina!!

When I see Mark BallAss it’s like a bull seeing red. I despise that preening, over-dancing mega doosh. He needs to be off the show. Why god, why is Tristan gone, but we’re stuck with that egomanical peacock?!
I felt a bit sorry for Pam, but she really was terrible (and definitely was on something). I’m almost positive she was on Tristan too, that man-stealing whore.
