Sarah was pretty much a wallflower this episode but she has a lot of promise and mostly does makeup. Oh and she grew up as a Mennonite which I’m sure will be mentioned later down the line.

Tommy quit his job as a chef to take on special effects and he really had a hard time in this episode. He sort of came off as a bitch but we’ll see where he goes.

Joe Castro….We’ll get to this dude later but I’m pretty sure he was selected solely to piss me the fuck off….

The episode starts with all the contestants meeting Sean Astin on top of the 1100 Wilshire in Hollywood at a pool party filled with beautiful people. All the contestants are of course excited to meet Sean and be part of the competition. Joe starts to tear up while some of the others just look around in awe. Mackenzie walks out and announces the challenge and everyone starts working on their designs. The pool party guests are their models and each contestant must use something from the pool area as part of their design. People start grabbing flowers, pretzels, floatation devices and anything else they can get their hands on. Is it wrong to keep hoping someone falls in the pool from all the craziness? Some of them are from the get go wack like Joe’s burned cheerleader. Seeing some of the stuff he has worked on, I think he’s not really a contestant and maybe a plant of some sort. If he were a real contestant they would have at least had his ass on the website and he is no where to be found. More on this later…Sean is the guest judge and he and Mackenzie go around and look at all the designs.
Foundation Challenge
- Using something from the pool party, create an original face (2 Hours)

Eric

Derek

Nicole

Tommy

Sarah

Roy

Laura

Joe

Jason

CC

Alana
Sean’s top two looks belong to Eric and Derek which kind of suck because they did similar designs and even both used the same item from the pool party in their design. Twins are like that and I can’t wait until they get cutthroat on each other. You know it is bound to happen. I wanted Roy to win just because he used a freaking soda bottle as the bird’s nose…a soda bottle, that’s like MacGuyver territory! Ericwins the challenge which means that he gets immunity from the Spotlight Challenge this week. After the challenge ends, the contestants all head to this fabulous house in the Hollywood Hills with an amazing view. Take a good look now because we won’t be seeing much of this later on in the season. I kind of love that we never have to see the drama within the house and we can really focus on the art and work they put forth. Everyone is an asshole under pressure so we never get to see who the real ones are in a relaxed setting.
Spotlight Challenge
- Create a modern character that fits in the Cantina Scene from Star Wars (3 Days)

The contestants meet Mackenzie on the back lot of Fox Studios and are greeted with a huge mural from Star Wars. That’s kind of awesome that this season they are going big with iconic images tuned with their own personal tastes. The challenge is given by Matthew Wood who voices characters for the Clone Wars animated series and it is to create a modern character that could fit in the Cantina Scene from Star Wars. Roy lets us know that he is so old that he saw the original series in the theater when they first came out. Like the original original, not this bullshit prequel Natalie Portman bullshit. The contestants are all placed in teams of two and start getting to work. Everyone starts by creating a concept and some of the teams are working very well like Roy and Rod who are basically thinking the same thing in terms of what they want to make. Tommy and Joe are having trouble communicating because Joe is steamrolling over Tommy with ideas and how things should be done. Sarah and Laura take more time to think of a background for their character and then a concept of a female bounty hunter. Derek and CC come up with a stupid concept of a jazz player with dreads and Eric and Jason are kind of quiet although Jason worries that if they fail he will go home because Eric has immunity.

Day 2 is where all the trouble really starts when Tommy finally can’t handle Joe’s bullying any longer. Joe is really a dick and at one point when Tommy is sculpting he comes over and basically mushes what he is doing because it is not to his liking. He interrupts him constantly with needing help from Tommy to badgering him and belittling everything that he does. Tommy eventually walks off and then concedes to just doing whatever Joe wants in order to get the work done. Nicole and Alana aren’t doing as well as they initially thought because they are having issues with getting their molds finished. Rod (the reason I like him) stops what he is doing to help them get everything completed because he would feel horrible if they couldn’t complete their pieces. It’s a competition and this dude is helping what should be his enemy complete their work. Patrick stops by with Mackenzie and really likes some of the concepts like Rod and Roy’s ambitious piece but some are falling flat like Tommy and Joe.

Day 3 is the final day and there is limited time to get everything done before last looks and then eliminations. Tommy and Joe are still at each other with Tommy just doing what he can to appease Joe. Nicole and Alana are still having issues getting their latex completed and then with coloring their pieces. Derek and CC’s coloring isn’t coming out the way they wanted and it looks like a burnt hot mess. Not to mention they scrapped the dreads for some bushy uncombed mess. During last looks, Tommy and Joe are still going with the arguments when Tommy says they should get the costume on the model before they finish painting. Joe disagrees and they end up with an incomplete model missing her shoes and staff and a horrible paint job. I have to believe that Joe is just fucking with us and that he was never really a contestant. Then again he hasn’t really done anything worth noting in his career which could be because of his shitass work ethic…
Judging Time

This season it looks like there will be four judges but they reveal later that Patrick is only here for the first episode because he’s doing the 300 sequel in Bulgaria. I’m sure that will be just as amazing as Underworld 3 and Total Recall and why did he even show up for the first episode if he wasn’t going to continue with the series? Just leave as he was my least favorite judge anyway. Replacing him is Neville Page who has created for Avatar, Prometheus and Cloverfield. He seems pretty awesome and at least I can understand him unlike Patrick and he seems to want to outbitch Glenn.

The judges uniformly loved Rod and Roy’s exoskeleton piece and how ambitious it was and I don’t blame them. It looks creepy enough to fit in a modern Star Wars scene and the two of them did an amazing job together. Nicole and Alana’s piece came together pretty well in the end considering all the issues they had. CC and Derek’s piece was trashed because the coloring was so off even though they had a good foundation with the latex pieces. Laura and Sarah’s piece was very well received and the judges loved the back story they created for the character and the details that went into completing that story. They had an actual reveal with costuming that fit into the scene of Tatooine. Before Tommy and Joe even get judged, Tommy basically grovels and says that it was all Joe and he just followed his lead to get the product completed. Glenn interrupts him and tells him he is throwing Joe under the bus and then proceeds to rip the piece apart because of how terrible it was. Vi says that it looks like a squished frog placed on top of an Easter hat. Tommy holds back tears while Joe just kind of looks dazed. Eric and Jason and Nicole and Alana are safe this week and are sent to the back room. CC and Derek and Tommy and Joe are on the bottom while Rod and Roy and Sarah and Elizabeth are on the top. The judges are discussing the winners and losers with everyone backstage when this happens…

Joe fucking leaves the set with his shit.
I don’t even understand why SyFy decided to air this episode when they should have just started with episode 2. Mackenzie announces that since Joe left he was disqualified and no one would be eliminated this week. As much as Joe talked shit to Tommy, he likely saved his ass because I think the judges were going to send him home over Joe. Rod and Roy‘s piece is declared the winner and will be displayed on the official Star Wars website in it’s original form as well as in the style of Clone Wars which you can see here. Rod was the ultimate winner by a hair as they felt the makeup had more to do with the win than the construction which Roy worked on.
If you like it, spread it!:

Nice recap SG.
I too like Rod for the reason you mentioned. I was like WOW I can’t believe he is so confident that he takes the time to help competitors without lording it over them. I was also impressed by Roy’s creativity.
But it was Sarah and Laura that brought a smile to me. I was enthralled by their geekiness and detailed knowledge of the Star Wars mythology. Never expecting that from two attractive women just proves I must still have some residual chauvinistic tendencies left. And, they also produced quality work as well.
The air brushing this year seems superior to that of past seasons and it’s nice to see that more than one contestant possesses this skill.
Joe just bewildered me. He was such an ass, I thought he must be a plant. And when he left, he was accompanied by someone that looked like they could be security. There must be more to this story, don’t you think?
So happy you also think Eric is hotter than Derek. Derek looks like the kid from ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ all grown up.
Photo heavy post for this type of show is great. Mad props for all the research on each contestants.
The judges on this show always amaze me. They are really like the whos-who in their industry. They are not second tier at all. The women (vi neil – not the right spelling) did the make up for the Hunger Games. These judges directly contributed to pop culture.
found this post about Joe (http://horrornews.net/56139/face-off-season-3-begins-fx-artist-joe-castro-hits-the-road/). I also found on another site that Joe has gone sort of crazy, to the point SyFy has had to get a restraining order. That is why he has been scrubbed from all promotional stuff.
nice recap!!!! I love Face Off!! It’s one of those rare competition shows that’s all about the competition and not heavy-handed on the drama, which I like.
But I will say this: WTF was with Joe? I knew he would be trouble when he declared he was director, producer, actor, and writer of many movies. But I like how they were like “he left, so he’s eliminated…..anyway, NEXT”. His creations were so bizzare, it’s like he put a beehive over the model’s head and wrapped it in toilet paper and glue. Dude.
Im really happy for this season! BTW, side story: In April my BF and I were in Vegas and rode an elevator with Tara from last season, and only AFTER the ride was over and we all went our seperate ways did my boyfriend say “That was Tara from Face Off!” DOH! I wish he talked to her, we may have gotten some scoop on the show and Glen’s awesome chest.
Hahahahahhah beehive that is perfect! I saw the article you posted but not the restraining order one and I think he was with a producer likely trying to figure out what he was doing and trying to get him back. Thanks for he compliments guys I will continue to try and image heavy it for you. I agree with everything said so far and hope this is a great season. The talent does seem higher this year for some reason except CC…not convinced on her.
Well, there’a always at least one person, usually a chick, who specializes in ‘beauty’ makeup and is a little FX light.
As to Joe, I honestly wonder if he has aspbergers (sp?) or something like it. He could look straight at the camera but not into peoples faces, which I understand is a common trait with Aspbergers. And his interpersonal skills were virtually non existent.
Loved the recap and looks like a good crop of artists. And I STILL say that Gage should have taken season one. His work and backstory on Hansel and Gretel was outstanding.
@timgunnssister-I totally agree with you about Gage – he was my favorite, but I think I remember something about him getting to work with one or more of the judges on a movie.
Wasn’t Ian married with kids? I guess he got a divorce or else he has some splaining to do.
The talent this year seems much higher then season’s past, it seemed even the judges were impressed.
Is it me or does Tommy look exactly like Dr. Daniel Faraway from Lost?
I want to put Rod in my pocket. It was sweet how he helped those girls and was so gracious about it. I also think it was cute how kind he was to Alana in the house afterwards. It’s always nice to see reality show contestants treat each other like human beings. That “This is a competition so let me be a dickface” mentality is so overrated.
And Roy’s work was so good! I loved how he put dust on the feet of his little machine thing.
It’s sad that Patrick isn’t going to be around. The new judge is cool, but I love me some Patrick. At least he’ll be doing something worthwhile with his time.
It’s not surprising to hear that Joe is actually a psycho. He couldn’t take criticism on his nonsensical burned cheerleader, and can we please discuss the way that he was crushing his model’s face with the prosthetic in the main challenge and wouldn’t stop until she was literally screaming? What is wrong with him?
And the way he treated Tommy…beyond inappropriate and childish. He definitely has serious social problems, but he didn’t strike me as an Aspie. I think he’s has some other issue or maybe is just a walking penis for no reason.
I think CC is somewhat talented…she’s not the best, but definitely not the worst. Her work in the little opening challenge was okay…it wasn’t amazing, but it was clean and recognizable. And I don’t think it wasn’t her fault that the alien came out a hot mess. She did the sculpting, which according to Patrick was very good…the mess happened with the paint and her partner did that. I hope they do something individual for the next challenge so we can really get a read on them, but I honestly think the least talented person this season might just be Alana. I like her, but she just has not impressed me so far. Her opening challenge thing sucked and she was absolutely no help when it came time to do the back of her alien’s head.
@featherhead, I believe Rayce was the one with a wife and like fifty kids LOL.
@chaosbutterfly-Thank you!! I don’t know why I thought it was Ian that was the married guy.
I say Joe’s Looked like a weed
And Joe Himself Looked like he was on drugs. He was Pretty “Dazed and Confused” If you know what i mean.
Thanks carol for that link……very interesting stuff. Apparently that “summer of massacre” movie Joe made was a horrible horrible movie, according to the reviews.
im curious to see if ians girlfriend proves herself the way ian did last season. they were the both one of the “newbies” in their respective casts.
enjoyed the episode and i was fine with the winner. i think anyone in the top 4 couldve won it fairly.
joe was insane. im glad we dont have to deal with that anymore
So I got the scoop on Joe and will do a little blurb on the next recap for you guys. Totally crazy situation.
hmmm . . . I found a couple links to Joe and his work. I have to say, because I’m crazy myself, but I was kind of mad that he walked off, coz I thought he looked kind of hot, and there is generally no eye candy on this show for the gays . . . unless Glenn and his sideburn spikes are your thing-lol!
From what I can see, he’s got a lot of work out there, twisted for sure, but it’s going back to his being pretty young. He also did some modeling, and from what I can see, hubbah-hubbah! Kinda sexy and dirty, and surprising as I’m sitting at work, innocently looking for info . . . hee . . .

Anyway, can’t wait for the recap. Love, love, love this show. I love all the stuff they do, the molding and painting, everything. It’s so creative and fun, I totes missed my calling, coz I would love to do this stuff!
And thank you SG for the pics, recap and info!!! Looking forward to the new season.
i worked with Joe years ago when he tried to work in the industry…. he was an asshole then and he’s certainly no different now.If anything he tried being on his best behavior for the cameras. His work has always been on the down side of awful and looks to have evolved into more bad habits and less attention to detail.
I was glad to see him go….running away as he so often did in the past….I’m sure he realized he didn’t have the chops to compete against even the newest of makeup school graduates .
I’m going to want to murder Alana pretty soon, I can feel it. If she keeps talking about being “the youngest” as if that entitles her to help from everything else it won’t be long before the others start to turn on her. The other women, anyway.
Whoops — help from everyONE else.
I would like to think Joe left to save Tommy… thus redeeming himself for being a cocky asshole. It’s obvious that by leaving… the show couldn’t eliminate anyone else because that would make one less episode. Then again… the guy couldn’t take critiques so maybe he snapped. I’m just glad Tommy gets a second chance. The poor guy was just tortured.
I love how the more experienced people like Rod weren’t being cocky like Joe. Everybody was so well mannered. I thought Laura and Sarah’s entry was the best. If I didn’t know any better I’d think it was an actually character from the movies. That small alien in the suit was a concept done many times and I didn’t think the alien looked realistic. I would actually WATCH the cartoon if the girls won.
I was a big fan of Rod’s and Roy’s, but something struck me while rewatching the episode: the judges were surprised by their ambitious project, which they weren’t sure could be accomplished, but Rod spent a good amount of time helping another team, which means that Roy had to pull double duty. Perhaps Roy had to work that much harder while Rod helped the ladies, or perhaps Roy was just so good that Rod had time to kill, but it seems to me that Roy was the driving force in their victory and should have won the overall challenge.
@ Sara: “I thought Laura and Sarah’s entry was the best. If I didn’t know any better I’d think it was an actually character from the movies. That small alien in the suit was a concept done many times and I didn’t think the alien looked realistic. I would actually WATCH the cartoon if the girls won.”
I TOTALLY AGREE!
Glenn Hetrick is working on the motion picture ‘Necroscope 4D’ with Evolving Pictures Entertainment.
I LOVE Tommy he is so awesome. I also like Nicole and Roy I see a lot of potential in them.
I don’t know what Joe’s problem is. I have seen a video on him on YouTube. He was asking for copies of his contracts(i don’t know why the crap he would want those) but he started invaded the place that was off limits and wouldn’t go finally he left though.
We need to find out about this and why he left something is going on.
