Face Off Recap: Alice in Zombieland

Last week the artists had to make dragons that danced and Eric danced his way back to Hong Kong. Kinda sad considering it was an Asian themed challenge and his ass lives in Asia…The episode starts with Derek saying his win was bittersweet now that his brother is gone. He vows to push forward for a win for his brother and himself now. The contestants all head downtown for the foundation challenge which is being held at a gym where the guest judge is Laila Ali. The challenge is to create realistic trauma make up as if the models had gone 10 rounds in the ring. The key to the makeup is to create realistic trauma and the artists all have 90 minutes to complete the challenge for a chance to win immunity.

Jason says that he used to participate in martial arts which he thinks will give him an advantage in creating a swollen eyebrow. Nicole works on bruising all over the body while Roy’s coloring is turning a little too purple. Laila looks through all the pieces with Mackenzie and decides that Jason and Nicole did the best with Jason winning immunity. Wow…he really pulled a win? Sorry for the lack of photos…Syfy sucks as far as pictures are concerned.

Everyone meets at the Descanso Gardens which are beautiful with all the flowers and trees in bloom when they reach Mackenzie in an area surrounded with weird mushrooms and large flowers. Mackenzie announces that a zombie virus has run rampant through Wonderland and the guest judge is the director/writer of the Resident Evil movie franchise, Paul W.S. Anderson. Damn he couldn’t have brought his wife for an added cool factor? The choices for the artists to select from are Alice, The Hatter, Queen of Hearts, Cheshire Cat and The White Rabbit. The challenge is to do an original take on one of the characters imagined as a zombie. Everyone selects their choice one by one and then they all take time to take in the scenery and design their concepts.

I knew this was coming ever since I read it on her bio but of course Sarah throws out that she doesn’t know what a zombie is because she grew up as a Mennonite. Bitch you are 29 years old and you didn’t leave the compound two weeks ago. Does she not have Google? She knows what the Cheshire Cat is but not a zombie? She eventually goes to Nicole for help and she suggests thinking of the original design and shredding it apart. Jason has immunity so he wants to take some chances and do things he hasn’t done before since he cannot be sent home. Roy’s got a very difficult concept (does he ever do simple?) and Tommy’s face reminds me of Donnie Darko because of the large bunny eyes.

Wow, really glad Syfy felt the need to blur out the latex nipples on Roy’s (awesome!) queen costume. Lame.

Wow, I hadn’t even noticed the blurred out nipps. BOOOO SyFi!

Ehhh, this ep was kinda disappointing to me. I thought Derek’s Cheshire cat was pretty damn cool, the thing is bright pink and purple after all. Sarah’s looked like a wet, soggy sewer rat.

Rod’s wasnt that bad, but it didn’t quite fit in with the theme. The dummy head the queen was holding looked better than the queen herself.

Tommy’s was just bizzare, a lumberjack Seattle Grunge rabbit wearing 10 cheap “turn your fur green” gold watches. I think his was definatley the worst.

Im bummed Nicole went home so early. Her Alice definatley looked like a zombie, although the make-up was too dark. But hey, why can’t there be putrid-purple zombies running around? I guess now that I think about it, her’s looked more like a true zombie than Rod’s…..he probably should have gone home.

oh, PS I forgot to mention I have NEVER heard the term “cowl” so much in my life, and I have watched all “Face Off” seasons!!! It’s starting to annoy me :)

Rod should have gone home. I didn’t think Nicole’s looked that bad and why can’t there be dark zombies?? It was much cooler and cleaner than anything Rod or Tommy did. I thought Alaina’s looked like Donnie Darko – creeped me out.

I thought it should have been Tommy going. . . I liked Alaina’s and at least it wasn’t lame. The right one won at least, Roy is kicking ass!!!

Alana’s does have a weirdly human esque look to it . . . definitely creepy!

The intestines were pretty gross . . . I’m just sayin’

Still enjoy this show immensely, even though it’s kind of the same again and again, I love watching them work on the molds and latex etc.

And SG, there’s a way to incorporate screen grabs . . . some of the cappers do that instead of using the web site. I don’t know how, but I’m sure Flip It could help! xoxo

Am I the only person that thought Roy’s Queen looked like crap? Laura’s mad hatter was awesome!

I didn’t think Roy’s queen looked like crap exactly, Kevin, but I didn’t think she looked like a zombie either.

I actually had in my notes he might be in the bottom for not doing a zombie but if you recall the RE movies there are mutations of zombies from the virus so I think he went with that.

I think the sheer amount of work that Roy did and the cool design trumped the non-zombie look though. And the fact that he did it so well in the time he had and by himself and still had time to explain to Alana how to put ears on her bunny says alot for him. I would have snatched those ears out of Alana’s hand and slapped her with them. If she makes it into the later stages of the competition, I wonder if people will still help her.
And I would have preferred that Laura won because her hatter was magical, but everyone in the top won already and Roy has been in the top often and has never won, so I guess it was finally his turn to win something.

And if anyone should have gone home, it should have been Tommy. His rabbit arm was not that great, and I feel like it was pretty much the biggest idea he had in there. Plus, the costume was a hot wretched mess. The White Rabbit is a proper gentleman. He would never wear that outfit, no matter what kind of shambles the rest of the world had fallen into. At least Nicole had more to her look and Rod’s thing wasn’t bad…he just didn’t do the assignment. Also, Nicole should have gotten props for at least wanting to take on the main character…everyone else was scared.

It’s time for Jason to pack it up. I was so annoyed that he got the immunity.

Sarah is insane. How do you not know what a zombie is?
That’s right up there with CC’s I’ve never seen a barnacle even though the water surrounds me excuse.

I didn’t mean that I don’t think Roy is awesome. I do think Laura is pretty awesome too, though, and sometimes it seems to come down to who followed the challenge more accurately, like with the dragons. I thought the White Rabbit almost worked in a parodic way, but it didn’t look intentional enough.

@chaos, I’m almost starting to suspect producer involvement with this “helping Alanna” business because it’s happening every week and no one is getting annoyed by it. She’s not THAT sexy, is she? Or am I underestimating the attraction any female would have for men in this line of work?

^ I do not think she is that sexy either. Maybe they all help her because she is the baby.

Or maybe you’re right and the editors are setting her up for her fall. Maybe on the week she goes home, it happens because nobody helps her. And the editors are just giving us evidence of why they might decide to take that course of action.
Or maybe someone is going to have an outburst on the stage about how Alana has never actually completed a creature solo.

Or maybe the contestants actually are classy saints and don’t care.
    There has been an inordinate amount of helping this season with people jumping into action to unlock or clean other peoples’ molds, give suggestions on other peoples’ designs, etc. so maybe people this season are genuinely just nice. Maybe we just have bitchy Grinch hearts. ;__;

Roy’s was definitely awesome, but I actually really like Alanna’s too. Although the fact that she can’t do ANYTHING by herself is definitely starting to get out of line. At some point she needs to do something solo.

And I didn’t think Nicole’s was the worst. In fact, it was just the paint job that sunk her. The rest of her work was solid. And Rod’s queen wasn’t awful either, although it definitely wasn’t a zombie… Tommy’s, on the other hand, was atrocious. Flannel and tweed are two very different things, my friend. If the challenge was to turn Vanilla Ice into a rabbit, then into a zombie, well, Tommy nailed it. But otherwise, no.

And SG, I’m so excited for Ink Master. I can’t wait. An artist who’s shop is right up the street from me is going to be on it this season, and she’s supposed to be AMAZING. I know a lot of friends that are going to her to get work done. She already has a six month waiting list…

Actually, I really LIKED Tommy’s White Rabbit- the way it looked, its backstory, the way it twitched and swiveled its head during the reveal. My family had nightmare because of the episode, and I also noticed the TV rating was upped because of the gore…
