Face Off Recap: Dishonored Proportions

Sarah is stuck on thinking of a concept and Derek gets to work on a classic thug. Glenn stops by and starts to give tips to all the designers regarding their concepts. Glenn doesn’t like Alana’s idea because he doesn’t believe she should align herself with another character but she decides to go against his recommendation. Glenn likes Rod’s idea to use the ears and place the eyes in a different place than where the performer’s eyes are and that Roy should focus more on his sculpt. Derek’s worried that his character looks too close to the one from last week but Glenn says that this is a new week and it goes with the theme. Tommy is told to reference real anatomy to get his proportions correct. Before Glenn leaves he makes a note to all that the proportions are not exaggerated enough and to really alter them to fit within the world of Dishonored. You know what would have been a cool prize…if the winner was able to have their character placed in the game as a DLC.

Day 2 begins and Tommy reminds us of how stupid he is by allowing Sarah to use his hands as molds for her character. This leaves him incapacitated for probably a few hours while the molding sets and dries. Taking note of the disproportionate comment from Glenn, several contestants make use of the fun house mirrors to get an idea of what the heads should look like. Laura ends up sculpting her face over and later adding a blood line to simulate the dripping blood tears of a Weeper. Rod attempts to get his mold out of his cast and I noticed that he isn’t wearing his arm brace. Hmm..He says that it feels as though he will tear all his tendons as he tries to free his mold and just kind of sits there as Alana watches. She finally gets up and repays him for the many times he has helped her and frees his mold for him. Alana is excited because most of her work is done and she is actually on time as the end of Day 2 draws near.

Alana returns at the beginning of Day 3 to see that she is actually behind as her edges are completely messed up and will require a lot to fix. Sarah ends up scrapping the hand molds that Tommy wasted a few hours on which I find HILARIOUS. Way to spend your time wisely. Derek ends up deciding that he’s going to change the ethnicity of character from black to white. Rod’s performer…yea I can’t focus on anything that they are doing because he’s either super hot or I just really miss Jason. Tommy believes he’s on a roll but then he gets stuck on doing hair which doesn’t come out the way he intends. Alana remarks during Last Looks that her character looks like the White Rabbit she previously did. Don’t look now but it also looks like the one she did last week…she has a thing with coneheads I guess. Time is called and everyone goes to meet the judges…holy shit do they not have a hair stylist on set because Glenn’s hair looks like a rat nest. Do you think he purposely styles it that terribly? Mac more than makes up for Glenn tonight in that gorgeous dress though.

I thought it might be a girl who wins this season since the last 2 winners were men I think.

Rod DOES keep making his own face – that’s why his creations tend to look alike. They have even shown him sculpting with one hand while holding a mirror with the other, looking at his reflection as a guide. Dude, the room is full of other people. If you have to have a guideline, use someone else.

I actually hope they bring Nicole back – I thought she was really talented. I dislike Alana (anyone who needs THAT much help shouldn’t be there) and poor Sarah started so strong but seems to either be really doubting herself or she’s exhausted her repitoire. Laura is quite talented but I worry about her range. And for a guy who works ‘in the haunted house industry’ (it’s an industry? really?) Roy does have quite a range. Derek seems to either be really good or really bad – there’s no middle ground.

errrr, I don’t know what I just hit but my whole comment went away.

It looks like the producers went into a Hot Topic store and decided all of the challenges from what the store was selling. Zombie Alice in Wonderland, steam punk, I am pretty sure Hot Topic has those covered many many times over.

Why didn’t Ve judge the beauty makeup quickfire? She did the makeup for The Hunger Games and that is sort of what they were looking for. The fact that Rod was so upfront with the judges about how awful he was at beauty makeup was really cool and mature of him. He got the judges to laugh along with him not just at him. But along that same line, are these guys only trying to be extreme special effect makeup artist? Almost all actors/actresses in movies have some form of makeup, even the simple rom-coms. They should have to do a challenge where they have to change the sex of their model as well as ethnicity but the final product/person has to be something that looks totally normal.

I just think you should start spelling Ve’s name correctly. It’s Ve, not Vi.

I’m missing how this was steam punk… but what do I know.

I’m pulling for Laura to win, and I too would like Nicole to come back, her or Eric are the only two with a shot, IMHO.

Roy winning it all would also be grand!

I would LOVE for Nicole to come back! She deserves it more than Tommy and Sarah for sure.

And Rod’s model was seriously hot. Like, I saw him in that aristocrat outfit without makeup and paused the tv for 5 minutes, hot.

I said this last episode, but I’ll say it again — Derek makes the same character every time. It looks good or bad depending on how well it fits the challenge. But it always has an aquiline nose and a thug sneer.

I’m glad Tommy got the boot because I was tired of his desperate-to-please facial expressions and tired of feeling slightly sorry for him without knowing why.

I noticed that one of the designers on Hot Set rocks a cowboy hat just like Roy’s. I guess that’s a Thing in the effects world?

As much as I love Rod, I definitely do not see him winning this season. And I think he doesn’t ask other people to be references because he doesn’t like to ask for help, which is BS. Everyone else is doing it…Alana practically has an assembly line set up for her creatures. So why shoot yourself in the foot by trying to be all noble and shit? And it’s not even really help…all they have to do is sit there with their God-given faces. You take the picture, and then everyone goes about their lives.
If Roy doesn’t get it, then it should be Laura. If Nicole comes back, she also has a shot. You know how people lurve a redemption storyline, especially when the person should not have gone home to begin with. I thought Sarah was a contender as well, but she has been circling the drain since that dragon challenge. She better pull it together…if not, I’d say she’s gonna go next. If not her, then Alana.

And yes, Rod’s model was gorgeous. When he pulled off the character head in the workroom to reveal his beauty, it was like watching a unicorn be born from a butt. If Rod is gonna make the same look every week, then he needs to start using that guy’s face as a mold. Bet Ve won’t complain bout that.

It’s better for everyone involved that Tommy is gone.
Glen really hit it on the head when he said that it’s great that Tommy loves effects so much, but he needs to go home and improve his skills. Speaking of Glen, he was so nice this episode. I guess instead of being an asshole, he decided to switch directions and take extreme pity on these steampunk novices.

@VGirl, we have the same taste in models, er, men.

Hubbycat: Snowy, is something wrong with the tv? It seems to be stuck.

SSC: no. I mean yes. Stuck. That’s it. I’ll just sit and watch it for a while. I’m sure it’ll work again soon. You run along. I got it.

omg….yes the model was so hot! I was like “whoah” when I saw him in that costume :)

I don’t know if anyone else feels the same, but the last few challenges for me have been kind of “ehh”. I dont know if the show is giving these contenstants vauge and weird ideas for projects (like last week, superhero based on a car? this week: steampunk video game?) and THAT’s why their creations are kinda blah? I dont know?!

I really like this show because the contestants are drama free, and are very likable people. Even Tommy, poor dude.
Roy is very talented, I’m sure he will win.
Rod is good, but he DOES do the same characters over and over!
I was very sad to see Nicole go as well, I thought she went way before her time…..hopefully she will be back!!!

” it was like watching a unicorn be born from a butt. ”

Just died laughing. I agree though…I was all “Oooh, honey, just wear that costume…”
