Face Off Recap: Junkyard Cyborg

Day 2 and Roy is wishing he had a pair of football shoulders to mount the arm pieces. He remembers his Dad telling him that you might not have what you need but you have things to make what you need so he starts fabricating a harness. Glenn walks in with Mac to survey the damage and starts off with Nicole whose direction he really likes. Sarah is asked about her references and she says she doesn’t have many but maybe TWO TERMINATOR MOVIES. He tells her to think about what she is doing and not to make it look flat. Glenn looks confused at Roy’s floppy robot arms but likes everything else and encourages him to focus more on the makeup and less on fabrication. Laura has changed ideas but Glenn says he needs to see the finished piece first which makes her even more weary. Derek’s design is liked but Glenn tells him to look at other ways to really make it pop including maybe adding lights. Glenn is excited by all the designs but in particular Nicole and Derek. Laura gets intimidated by Roy and decides to go a bit bigger while Sarah scales back since everyone else is going so big in order to stand out. Um didn’t that hurt you before in the sidekick/superhero challenge? Derek’s face mold cracks a bit but he decides to incorporate it instead of being upset.

The last day has arrived and Laura decides to meld all her concepts into one design which never works on this show. I don’t want to see her go but come on girl get your shit together and settle on one idea. Sarah’s chest piece that she had been working on isn’t fitting because her model has huge boobs. Her quick fix is to tape the shit out of the boobs and try to fit the piece over them which kind of works. Nicole is excited about her piece because it has a bitch brow…you know that wacky high arch brow kind of what Nicole tries to achieve. During Last Looks, Laura’s model starts to get faint and has to leave to use the bathroom which leaves her sitting there worrying about whether she will have a model on stage. Eventually he comes back and she scrambles to get the rest of the edges fixed and airbrushed. This week’s special guest judge is producer Gale Ann Hurd whose credits include the Terminator franchise and Aliens. Bitch is amazing, basically.

Sarah

Roy

Nicole

Laura

Derek

Glenn is on the fence with Laura’s piece while Neville downright hates it because all her ideas aren’t cohesive. Roy’s piece gets a lot of comments about having everything but the kitchen sink but Neville is very impressed. Glenn makes a point to note that Roy spends too much time fabricating and not enough on makeup and his huge pieces make him miss other opportunities. Neville can’t see any sort of function with Sarah’s piece and notes that she doesn’t seem to know herself. Gale asks which organs were replaced and she can’t answer her which leaves Gale disappointed that Sarah seems to have missed the main objective. Nicole’s piece is liked by all and Gale wants to bring her to Comic Con because the fans would eat it up. Glenn loves her new mentality which is that she creates for her, not what she thinks the judges want to see. Derek’s creation is also well received with Gale saying she could see it in one of her films. Derek and Nicole are clearly at the top with Nicole taking another win. Glenn announces that Sarah was definitely the one to leave this weak because nothing looked functional as a cyborg. Sarah thanks the judges and though she is disappointed in herself she wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. Can’t say I haven’t been waiting for this moment for awhile…

You would think if special effects is your thing, you would watch as many movies as you can to learn and pick up ideas. Her excuse of being a menonite is not going to work in the real world. I started to think she overstayed her welcome.

I hope they do the body paint challenge where they make the model disappear into the background. That’s my favorite.

Nicole deserved her win. I hope it’s her and Roy for the final two.

@featherhead Right? I would have locked myself in a room with a sketch pad and watched every iconic special effects movie. And apart from that, wouldn’t it give you a certain edge in that your designs would be fully original?

Okay, am I the only one who wants to send Glenn some shampoo and conditioner? So disgusting. And I’m really sick of his Roy hate. He seems to be upset when he does more than everyone else, and the reasoning is that he does too much. Oh, so he misses the details? Really? Because there wasn’t any detail to the exposed brain with scalp flap? I can’t remember them ever pointing out a lifted edge, or a bad paint job for him. So what gives? And none of the other judges seem to have a problem.

And yeah, Nicole’s was incredibly awesome, but there was something really familiar about it, didn’t she already do a similar character in the first episode? (With Laura? The Mos Eisley character?) Which was also awesome. Another nit to pick is the chest piece was too arc-reactor-esque for me.

Team Nicole! And Team Roy’s model!

…ok I talk like I’m boy crazy, and I act like I’m boy crazy, but don’t be fooled. I am boy crazy. Lol.

And oh fuck, Sarah. Girl you were bringing shame to my name! I was whatevs about her after the pirate challenge and I’m starting to wonder if she got replaced with a pod person after that one. How do you go from AMAHZING to “oh god how do you zombie I’m a Mennonite I have no clue”???

    No, Sarah. Just… No.

Watching Sarah was like watching a helium balloon at a children’s party, starting to deflate, and threatening to ruin the cake . . . weak, weak, weak . . . I’m relieved the pathetic-ness is over!

I’ve got to pick Nicole, Laura and Roy, but frankly, I like Derek too, so at this point, they are all pretty strong.

And yes, When Glenn gets in the mood of superiority, he’s very hard to bear . . . not that he’s not hard to bear anyway, and @LBOH, it’s more than shampoo needed for that mess, but nice of you to take such a sympathetic approach!!! I’d like to dip him in bleach for a good long time . . .

IT IS NOT FAIR that NIcole did not have to participate in how ever many challanges she did not participate in, and get to come back !

    1) I’m not sure where you’re getting the “Laura has faltered in the past few weeks”. She WON two weeks ago and last week was in the top looks. Laura has never been on the bottom. Derek, however, was in the bottom last week.
    2) LBOH-Nicole did not team with Laura in the Star Wars episode–that was Sarah.
    3) Featherhead-There is no “final two”. It’s a final three.
    4) Nicole hasn’t been in enough episodes to be repetitive, and for this,Lisa, I agree with you totally.
    5) This is a good site to check your facts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Face_Off_(season_3)
    Just sayin’….

I’m rooting for Laura, Roy and Nicole to be in the final three. I’d take Derek in place of Nicole because he had to do every challenge. If Roy goes out because he fabricates again, I’ll be upset unless he really does a poor job with the challenge.

Tiny editing point Weary means being tired. WARY means being cautious and concerned, as does LEERY.

I think Nicole has a more fearless attitude because she’s been through the whole elimination process and is probably less worried about it. I really like her work. Laura is wonderful, Derek is very inconsistent and Roy needs to stop so much fabricating.

And to those who know, do SFX makeup artists usually get such vague direction from a screenwriter, director or DP? I mean, it seems to me that they would get a bit more, actually, a LOT more direction when creating a makeup. A director in particular generally has a very specific vision before the makeups are created, yes?

Sarah was becoming Alana so she had to go.

@Cindy – I know it’s a final three, I don’t care who the third person is as long as Roy and Nicole.
did you guys catch Glenn’s ponytail at the walk through? It was so sad.

@featherhead YES I noticed Glenn’s pony tail! I turn to my BF and was like “Wait, he has all that going on in the front, AND a pony tail too?” WTF :)

Ok, I can understand Sarah was probably sheltered, that’s totally understandable. But for AT LEAST the last 10 years she’s been out on her own and could have made her own decisions to expose herself to new things. Oh well!

Ugh, although I love Nicole, I don’t agree with her coming back and it it’s unfair to the other contestants.

@featherhead – Why Nicole? Dude, do you know anything?

She got kicked due to the fact her work was less then par, and after she left I found out she was allowed to return home, relax, practice, see her friends, and returned fresh, while the rest was still busting their buts.

I’m sure she’s a nice girl and all, but she doesn’t deserve to be there.

Nicole shouldn’t have gone home in the first place, so it’s all whatever to me. The bottom line is that she’s here now and she’s kicking butt. Bully for her.

I still think that Laura has a pretty good chance of making the finale, if not winning. Derek and Nicole will probably be there with her.

I think Roy is great, but he might get eliminated next week for being a one way monkey. For the next challenge, he should fabricate next to nothing and just focus on having a cool design and doing amazing makeup and prosthetics.

I thought Glen was being nice in this episode. I really do want to wash his hair though, just to see how much product will come out. Can ya’ll imagine the buildup issues he must have? I just want to soak his hair in clarifying shampoo solution. And then rub down his face with baby oil, to get rid of all his makeup.

I also want to eat chicken fingers off Roy’s model’s stomach.
That V shape near his pelvis will be perfect for storing various dipping sauces.

@chaosbutterfly – Nicole “not going home in the first place” is irrelevant.

She got kicked, whether you agree or disagree, that doesn’t change that fact.

Again, she was allowed to return home while the others were still blocked off from the world.
That is why it is unfair.

And this ” it’s all whatever to me.” If it were you in this competition, how would you feel?

If they gave her a second chance then they need to give EVERYONE a second chance to make it fair.

@QNA – I don’t have any insider info, and I don’t agree with booted contestants coming back. But since Nicole has returned she has been doing great work (my opinion for what it’s worth). I feel bad for Roy since he always seems to go above and beyond the challenge and the poor guy never wins.

@featherhead – Please forgive the way I worded that…. It did sound a bit rude and that was not my intent.

Any who, Of course Nicole is doing good work… She was able to return to the competition rejuvenated (She had two weeks off.) while the others are getting tired.

That’s like you running 10 miles then all of a sudden you have to race someone that’s not winded like you are.

If it was anyone else that got that second chance other than Nicole, I believe they would have done just as good of a job because of that fact…. AKA Eric.

So if Nicole does make it to the final… That’s bull, because she didn’t earn her way like the others.

I don’t have a problem w/Moviles being in the finals.

However, I DO have a problem w/her winning, like QNA states above.

And Laura really should’ve been in the bottom w/that mess. It’s bull that the didn’t put her there and just eliminated Sarah like that. I yhink they’re playing favorites at this point. I mean Roy does do makeup, its just his fabrication overwhelms the makeup.

“If it was anyone else that got that second chance other than Nicole, I believe they would have done just as good of a job because of that fact…. AKA Eric.”

    Oh no no no.
So if CC had come back, you think her work would have been just as good as Nicole’s?
Or if Tommy had come back?
Or if Jason had come back?
    Let’s be real.
Yes, she got to rest, but let’s not minimize her talent or the fact that getting a second chance at something has a funny way of lighting a fire under your ass. She’s not doing well solely because she got a little break from the competition.

If I were in the competition, that /would/ be my viewpoint. Nicole got eliminated, Nicole came back. It sucks and isn’t fair, but if you can’t do anything about it, then oh well, whatever. The best thing to do is what the other contestants seem to be doing, which is just focusing on not getting eliminated their own selves.
And bully for them too, for not wasting their time and energy bitching and moaning that it’s not fair. The producers don’t care that it’s not fair. Judges don’t care, Mac doesn’t care. Nobody cares. If they cared, they wouldn’t have done it.

“It’s bull that the didn’t put her there and just eliminated Sarah like that.”

Sarah had been circling the drain for a good minute now.
It was definitely time for her to go.
And if you compare Laura’s work (even in this challenge) to Sarah’s, then there’s no kind of justification to send Laura home over Sarah.
