Face Off Recap: Monster Twist

Last week Tommy was finally set free to go home and return to cooking after failing to create a disproportionate character based in the world of Bethesda’s Dishonored.

This week the artists meet on Olvera Street and find Patrick and Mac waiting for them. The twist is that they won’t be competing in the Foundation Challenge, one of their former opponents will be for a chance to re-enter the arena…all except Joe of course. The challenge is to create make-up based on Day of the Dead and of course all of them are super excited and nervous to have the chance to compete again. Last week I had my money on Nicole returning but I would also be happy with Eric. Let’s face it: CeCe has no effects skills, Tommy is too green and Jason doesn’t seem enthusiastic. Eric and Nicole were the real talents that should have probably stuck around and of course they are chosen at the top with Nicole re-entering. Admit you felt a bit bad for Derek and Eric having to say goodbye again.

The challenge this week is for the contestants to bring children’s artwork to life. The kids are from City Heart which offers free art classes to kids in the LA area which is kind of awesome. The artists are all excited to work with the children but creepily not as much as Alana who refers to them as baby nuggets. The kids get to pick who they want to work with (I really thought that Alana’s bozo hair would scare them into picking her last). After selecting who they want to work with the kids and contestants get 30 minutes to consult on the design of the monster they drew. Sarah’s kid names her monster Sweetie Stealer because he steals sweets. Derek’s kid wants a scary alien that eats people with lots of blood while Laura’s kid wants a half-vampire, half-dragon baby that throws rocks. Rod’s kid talks his ear off with all her creativity and ideas which end up translating to a big head and tentacles.

Rod is fucked. He starts sculpting although his arm is starting to bother him at this point but he knows he needs to push. He then realizes that he is creating a huge head again but relies on the fact that his client wanted it that way to save him. Laura ends up using a few bags of clay for her super-sized head while Roy starts work on animatronics for his monster. Roy’s kid picked the right guy considering he wanted moving eyelids. Nicole starts working on her piece which is a former human turned bat dwelling monster ala The Descent (great film). I noticed Sarah is sewing something so I guess they have a choice in making their own costumes or having it made for them from their sketch. Such a mystery…Day 1 draws to a close as Rod’s arm continues to bother him but he can’t slow down with as much as he has left to complete.

like Roy said, it’s not fair to the others that Nicole gets a bye to the final 5 or 6 when she hasn’t competed in the last 2 or 3 challenges since she left. I am never a fan of letting eliminated contestants come back.

It’s about time Rod went home. Every one of his creations looked the same.

I, too, am not a fan of letting auf’d contestants come back but if it had to be, I’m glad it was Nicole.

Sad to see Rod go but he did seem to be a bit of a one-trick pony (or one trick monkey if you’re named Dmitry). He definitely had the technical skills and was a genuinely nice guy but the creative spark was weak in him. I have not been a fan of either Eric or Derek – their work can be sloppy and their color choices are off. I think Laura is the real ‘sleeper’ here and I’m so glad she finally won. Her ideas are great, she’s got the technical skills and she handles color really well. Hopefully, she takes it all.

Oy. *hangs head in shame* That would be a one WAY monkey. Wondering if I’ll be kicked out of the Dmitry fan club now.

good point about the kids not being there for the reveal! I hadn’t even noticed that…hopefully they showed it off-camera.

Although I love Ncole and I am happy she’s back (hell, I dont think she should have been out in the first place), I dont think she should have had the opportunity to come back. Like Josh with “Master Chef”. BUT now that I think of it, they probably did that because of the mess that crazy dude Jason (?) left behind when he took off the first day. They were short one person.

I thought Laura’s monster was bad-ass, everytime it was on screen I cracked up!!! Good win for her. I am bummed to see Rod go….he was a great dude, unfortunatley all his creations did look alike. But they weren’t BAD, they were really really good actually.
So basically the Judges are picking Alana’s ” always different yet shitty” creations over Rod’s “same old thing, yet always great” creations? Ehhhh……

You know I have to wonder if Roy would have said the same thing about contestants coming back if it was him in that situation and not Nicole.

@annie- actually they weren’t short a person when Joe (?) left. They ended up not eliminating anyone else, so he would count as the eliminated contestant. I don’t agree with bringing back eliminated contestants, just my opinion for what it’s worth. I don’t think it’s fair to the ones already there.

Someday that model will be mine. It’s criminal what they do to his face. And by that I mean they keep covering it up. That hotness is the reason it takes me an hour and a half to watch an episode. I need at least 30 minutes to stare…..

Anyway! I’m glad Nicole is back and as much as I loved Rod, the guy had to go. Now we just need to get rid of Sarah and Alana.

@timgunnssister: you’re not kicked out of the fan club but Dimitry is probs very dissappointed.

I agree with it not being fair, but I also agree, I’m glad Nicole is back.

Roy is really super talented and fast, I think it may be him and Laura in the final.

I thought this was a pretty hard challenge . . . and in a lot of ways, not good at all. Love the program for the arts and their support, but kids pictures of monsters is so random.

@SG, I too noticed Mac’s lack of a great look this time.

@Annie, it is Joe, Feather head had it right.

I have to agree that Rod was REALLY repetitive – but as he pointed out this week, it seems unfair to hold the big head against him this week, BECAUSE it’s what his client wanted! Wasn’t that part of the point of the challenge? To do what the client wanted?

And wtf with not having the kids there? Their opinion should have counted for something, because they helped design them from their drawings.

I’m a huge fan of Roy, so i’m just glad he’s still there. :-)
