Day 2 brings Neville to the studio to critique and offer advice to all contestants. Laura’s piece has a shit ton of foam and she is concerned about taking too much out. Roy’s tickle monster provides some caution because of the mechanisms involved with blinking the eyelids. Derek’s told to be careful of his beak looking too parakeet and more bird of prey. Alana’s nose is too humanistic and doesn’t line up with the other nose holes so Neville tells her to really look at it. Rod’s work is singled out as looking too similar to past pieces but he tries to explain that it is what the client wants. Neville flat out tells him he should probably change his design but Rod is too committed to pleasing his little client’s heart and decides to honor her drawing and hopes the judges agree. Alana’s piece is looking a little ghostbuster-ish while Nicole is worried that she isn’t doing cartooney like the rest of her competitors. At the last minute Roy’s eyes don’t blink because of the pressure placed on the lines by the foam. He’s worried because his other pieces are a little basic and he’s relying on the animatronics to work to complete the piece.

Day 3 and oh heeeyyyyy. I see our gorgeous model is back working with Derek this week. Has he always been around and I just never noticed because my other eye candy Jason is gone? Roy continues working on his eyes determined to make them work properly while Nicole is now behind schedule and freaking out. Derek starts working on his wing portion of his costume and it looks shitty. He notes that he plans to “wing it”…boo. Roy decides to use his kid’s color scheme for the character while Sarah takes all 4 hours on Day 3 to complete the paint on her character. She realizes that if there is an issue with application she is screwed due to lack of time. Last Looks and Derek’s costume starts to fall apart at the ends while Sarah finishes in the last few seconds. Everyone heads out for judgement and I’m not really sure who will make it to the next round. All I know is that Mac’s dress is less than amazing this week…I guess budget went to flying Patrick from Bulgaria to LA for a half-day challenge.

Alana

Nicole

Derek

Laura

Roy

Rod
So the challenge is based on bringing the artwork of the kids to life but the kids aren’t even present to see it come to fruition? If I was one of those kids I would have demanded to be present to see what my artwork turned into. Sarah and Nicole are safe for the week so let’s move on to the others. Oh surprise, surprise…Alana created another conehead creation with pale paint. Thankfully Ve (
Hi Cindy) calls her out on the paint job while Neville bashes her on the nose and Glenn disagrees with the both stating he really likes it. Rod is called out on his big baby head and Glenn tells him to work on things that are wispy, thin or hyper-realistic because he isn’t bad at sculpting he just seems to be stuck. Laura’s piece is liked by Neville and Ve but Glenn doesn’t comment so let’s assume he likes it. Roy’s piece confused Glenn while Ve loved the craziness and Neville loved the coloring. Derek’s piece was disappointing to Ve but Glenn says that he made good decisions but just needed more detail work and texture.

If you like it, spread it!:

like Roy said, it’s not fair to the others that Nicole gets a bye to the final 5 or 6 when she hasn’t competed in the last 2 or 3 challenges since she left. I am never a fan of letting eliminated contestants come back.
It’s about time Rod went home. Every one of his creations looked the same.
I, too, am not a fan of letting auf’d contestants come back but if it had to be, I’m glad it was Nicole.
Sad to see Rod go but he did seem to be a bit of a one-trick pony (or one trick monkey if you’re named Dmitry). He definitely had the technical skills and was a genuinely nice guy but the creative spark was weak in him. I have not been a fan of either Eric or Derek – their work can be sloppy and their color choices are off. I think Laura is the real ‘sleeper’ here and I’m so glad she finally won. Her ideas are great, she’s got the technical skills and she handles color really well. Hopefully, she takes it all.
Oy. *hangs head in shame* That would be a one WAY monkey. Wondering if I’ll be kicked out of the Dmitry fan club now.
good point about the kids not being there for the reveal! I hadn’t even noticed that…hopefully they showed it off-camera.
Although I love Ncole and I am happy she’s back (hell, I dont think she should have been out in the first place), I dont think she should have had the opportunity to come back. Like Josh with “Master Chef”. BUT now that I think of it, they probably did that because of the mess that crazy dude Jason (?) left behind when he took off the first day. They were short one person.
I thought Laura’s monster was bad-ass, everytime it was on screen I cracked up!!! Good win for her. I am bummed to see Rod go….he was a great dude, unfortunatley all his creations did look alike. But they weren’t BAD, they were really really good actually.
So basically the Judges are picking Alana’s ” always different yet shitty” creations over Rod’s “same old thing, yet always great” creations? Ehhhh……
You know I have to wonder if Roy would have said the same thing about contestants coming back if it was him in that situation and not Nicole.
@annie- actually they weren’t short a person when Joe (?) left. They ended up not eliminating anyone else, so he would count as the eliminated contestant. I don’t agree with bringing back eliminated contestants, just my opinion for what it’s worth. I don’t think it’s fair to the ones already there.
@featherhead…ohhhhhh yeah! Youre right, thanks for reminding me!
(I also like how either of us can remember the dude’s name, lol)
Someday that model will be mine. It’s criminal what they do to his face. And by that I mean they keep covering it up. That hotness is the reason it takes me an hour and a half to watch an episode. I need at least 30 minutes to stare…..
Anyway! I’m glad Nicole is back and as much as I loved Rod, the guy had to go. Now we just need to get rid of Sarah and Alana.
@timgunnssister: you’re not kicked out of the fan club but Dimitry is probs very dissappointed.
I agree with it not being fair, but I also agree, I’m glad Nicole is back.
Roy is really super talented and fast, I think it may be him and Laura in the final.
I thought this was a pretty hard challenge . . . and in a lot of ways, not good at all. Love the program for the arts and their support, but kids pictures of monsters is so random.
@SG, I too noticed Mac’s lack of a great look this time.
@Annie, it is Joe, Feather head had it right.
Love the shout-out..and I get a kick out of your reviews! Keep ‘em coming. Gotta agree about the conehead thing too.
I appreciate you pointing it out otherwise it would have never changed. Thank you for reading and commenting!
I have to agree that Rod was REALLY repetitive – but as he pointed out this week, it seems unfair to hold the big head against him this week, BECAUSE it’s what his client wanted! Wasn’t that part of the point of the challenge? To do what the client wanted?
And wtf with not having the kids there? Their opinion should have counted for something, because they helped design them from their drawings.
I’m a huge fan of Roy, so i’m just glad he’s still there.
