Roy’s mold cracks but because of time limits he has to piece it together with bubble gum and good luck and hope for the best. Rod isn’t thrilled with his new design but he doesn’t have much time so he has to go with it. I’m convinced that Tommy is brand new to the world of special effects because he makes really newb mistakes. He’s trying to build a grenade launcher arm piece with a glue gun and when it isn’t working out he gets frustrated. Sarah luckily witnesses his fuckery and tells him to use epoxy which makes him throw his hands up like oh duh. Yeah duh. Day 3 and Jason and Rod are frantically trying to finish their applications. Tommy makes another newb mistake by applying shellac to foam that hadn’t dried which ends up burning. He also breaks his bald cap…ugh why is he still here? As usual everyone freaks out in the last few minutes trying to get everything together. The paint issues go to Sarah, Derek and Jason this week for going too dark. Sarah finally takes her head out of her ass and realizes that she hasn’t really done anything compared to everyone else.

This week’s special guest judge is Kevin Fucking Smith and Laura freaks out the same way I did when I first met him. Kevin Smith is amazing although a bit long winded so I was kind of worried about his input during judging. Oh and why the fuck is Glenn wearing colored contacts? It’s like he came to judging straight from the goth club. Kevin says that orphans make good superheroes and he has a point if you look at ones like Superman, Batman and Spiderman.

Derek and Sarah

Tommy and Laura

Jason and Rod

Alana and Roy
Glenn says that Laura and Tommy are completely polarized in that he loves Laura’s character and hates the one that Tommy created. Vi comments that Tommy’s character looks like a footballer that went through a meat grinder. Jason gets called out for doing the same face and Vi says she is disappointed that he didn’t think outside of his box. Neville can’t get over covering up such a fine specimen of a body with a silly coat and Glenn tells them the head pieces are flat and floppy. Sarah SHOULD get called out on making a Jersey Shore character with super dark tanned skin but everyone is just confused on what she actually did in 3 days. Glenn asks the obvious of how would her eye patch stay on and Sarah answers with glue. Obviously knowing that is a stupid answer, he questions why anyone would glue an eye patch to their face. Derek’s jaw starts to fall off which is pretty embarrassing though Kevin does say they look the most like a superhero team and liked the insignias.

If you like it, spread it!:

I think Laura should win it all, but it’s sad that Joe is spreading those rumors because I feel like if she does win that some people who will ignorantly believe said rumors will not give her the credit she deserves or not vote for her because of them. I think he was just intimidated by how awesome she was day one and this is his revenge. Seriously though, he is three gallons of crazy in a two gallon bucket anyways, so let’s not talk about him.
I too thought Alana’s looked pretty crappy. The flames were totally lame and I swear I could probably get them at the Halloween Party Store a mile away. Plus, they did not make super HEROES they made super villains. If you follow the back story it’s the daughter of the frakkin devil and her sidekick that comes along to cause trouble for the human race….how is that even a super hero?
So Sarah how does the eye patch stay on ? “Ummm, glue.”
I was sorry to see such a weak effort from Sarah, and weirdly, she was making those goggles, why wouldn’t she have made an eye patch? Laura’s was really alien looking. I actually liked Alana and Roy’s pair. I thought the flames were very comic book. (sorry SG) She’s a newb, but she has great potential. I even think she’s gained a drop of confidence too. At first, I thought she was just the cute girl that got cast, but again, she’s been surprising me in her barely making it ness. I do hope a girl wins, and it means nothing if Joe said it first . . . was he guessing, or conspiring?!
I was even sadder to see Rod getting stuck in his ugly with the sculpt. It is a rather unattractive face he keeps making. I wish him luck, coz he must outlast Tommy, and perhaps Alana . . . after that, it should be pretty stiff competition, unless Sarah continues to fall-I hope not.
I love, love, loved Mackenzie’s jacket in that first bit. I would love, love, love even more to wear a boy version of it (yes, I am crazy, but that color makes me so excited, and I loved the style)
Does it seem like I loved it?
Anyone watch Hot Set after? I did, and it was cool in a similar way, but not as cool. I’ll still watch it tho.
Um yes that jacket was amazing. Her costumer is just brilliant! Don’t worry I notice clothing because my close friend does wardrobe for movies and commercials. I just don’t get Sarah she started out great and slid down…or was she just lucky?
I didn’t watch Hot Set because I would probably want to cap it and I just don’t have the time for 4 shows since Ink Master starts in a few weeks. I’ll check it out online though, glad it was kinda cool.
I honestly didn’t feel comic from any group but Alana’s was just cheese to me. I really enjoyed Laura’s. I didn’t understand Derek and Sarah’s concept either.
I like the concept of Alana’s character, but the execution was lacking. The flames in particular looked very fake and cheap. I wasn’t particularly impressed with any of the designs in this episode, though.
I thought the flames looked cheap too, and the whole idea was reminiscent of Roy’s mutated queen from the previous week. I thought as a pair their makeups worked well, though… I totally thought Derek’s looked like a bootleg Hellboy too and the “eyepatch” just made no sense. I thought Kevin Smith’s idea of having a spike going through it would have been pretty cool.
Just the amount of work Roy does and that he always is in the top makes me wonder how Alana or Laura could possible beat him?! He rocks!!
Derek has been making the same face since that saxophone playing lizard from the Star Wars challenge. The judges even made the same comment about him giving the face too much of an expression. And Laura’s creature looked almost exactly like her Avatar creature. I say “creature” because only the motorcycle duo looked anything like superheroes to me. All the rest looked like either villains or alien sidekicks of superheroes. And yes, SG, Alana’s creature was hideous. I couldn’t figure out what was up with that nose. It would have been ok on a side character but you couldn’t stare at that through a whole movie, could you?
I think Laura could beat Roy. Her designs are more elegant than his and she executes them so well with that makeup. But it will be close; I like them both a lot.
I didn’t like Alana’s creature either. I guess because it was a comic book challenge, it was okay to have those flames looking so two-dimensional and flat, but I just really disliked it. And that nose was horrific. I’m also irritated that Alana won, but Roy literally told her everything to do. She couldn’t even strap some of those plastic flames to her character’s hands without Roy telling her how.
But I think in this case, it was just a situation where the judges just had to pick the best of the worst because everyone really sucked today. It’s clear that alot of them didn’t know too much about comic book superheroes and what makes a great one vs. a stupid one. And that’s bad. I’m also kind of over these guys saying “I don’t know about ____, so I can’t do this”. That is not a valid excuse. Like, even if they don’t normally do superhero stuff, I feel like that’s such a big part of the industry that they should be pretty well-versed on the lore. That’s like being a model who doesn’t read Vogue.
I’m so glad that Jason is out.
Next to go should be Tommy. I like him as a person, but he is so..not good.
And I laughed so hard when he slapped his goggles off his own face in front of the judges. When doing too much goes wrong.
Steampunk challenge, huh? I hope everyone is ready for Glen to be even more of a condescending asshole to everyone because he practically gave birth to steampunk and is the greatest and most talented steampunker of all time.
OF ALL TIME.
And was it just me or was Ve really mean in this episode?
Some of her comments hurt my feelings.
I couldn’t believe it when Alana was explaining “everything” she did and then said that Roy “worked hard too”. Way to take credit for the stuff when in reality she just got lucky to be paired with Roy.
I hate to say it, but I thought Rod should have gone home. He has made that puffy downturned mouth face over and over again
Does anyone know where I can find out more about the Space Mole car…That thing was cool and no one chose it. Thanks in advance!
Laura is good, but Roy is also able to elevate his partners above their limitations. He should have won the first team challenge and this one. I am now an unabashed Roy fanboy.
Let me start off by saying the author of this blog probably doesn’t work in the special effects industry, so anything you say can just go straight to hell. You made a pretty inappropriately presumuptuous accuasion about one of the contestants, which is slander by the way. So far from the truth, it’s ridiculous. You are a fucking chump, whoever you are. Instead of sitting on your computer all day talking shit on people who worked really hard to fight for their dream, you should maybe do something a little more productive with your time. If special effects is so interesting to you, then you should get some materials and work on your own projects so you can get a taste of how difficult and precise all of this is. If you are going to watch the show, at least watch it to appreciate these artists’ work.
