Face Off Recap: Who’s the New Who?

Last week we lost Rod who was getting a bit too repetitive in the huge head department but at least we got Nicole back in a surprise twist. This week opens with Alana sulking in bed because she misses Rod and felt they would be there until the end together. Clearly she can’t see the work around her or she would have spotted his and her eventual demise coming like a freight train.

The artists meet on the Whoville set stationed on the Universal back lots and really? None of them guessed Whoville or Suess from their surroundings? To celebrate the 50th anniversary the artists will each select a character from Dr. Suess’ Sleep Book to create a human hybrid character that captures the essence of Dr. Suess. The special guest judge this week is Brian Grazer who worked on The Cat in the Hat and also looks like he is mixed with a bit of Grinch blood. He tells the artists that the key is creating reality and truth from the actor and using make-up that isn’t distracting or that feels superficial. Nicole selects the Bumble Tub, Derek picks the Snorter McPhail, Roy picks the Foona Lagoona Baboona, Alana picks the Offt, Laura picks the Chippendale Mup and Sarah takes the Hinkle Horn Honker. Roy pokes fun at Alana because she selected her character based on something her and Ian say and everyone knows you don’t pick things based on your spouse…then again they aren’t dating anymore.

During the design phase everyone takes a peek at the Sleep Book to get an idea of what their character looks like. Everyone is pretty excited and filled with ideas except Alana whose character is a huge puff ball. Back at the lab everyone selects their models and Alana is still confused and unsure of what she should do. She starts bugging Derek about ideas for a character and when that doesn’t really work she starts crying and whining to Sarah who gives her a bit of motivation. Nicole and Sarah discuss costuming and Nicole suggests to Sarah to use pajamas because it would be cute and it’s a book about sleeping. I’m pretty sure this will bite her in the ass later. Roy thinks that his sculpt looks too much like the Grinch but gets assurance from the others that it doesn’t. He then starts making a huge stomach piece that has about 250 clay pieces on it and requires help to move it around.

Day 2 and Ve stops by with Mac to check out the concepts and designs and offer some critiques. She is nervous about the direction that Alana has chosen because it doesn’t look feminine which is what she wanted. Roy’s huge tummy looks heavy so she suggests that he use foam instead to lighten the load. I wouldn’t mind his monkey dropping pants though, have you seen his model? Ve digs Derek’s hair piece and style while she criticizes Nicole’s choice of fun fur. Apparently Glenn isn’t a fan of fun fur so she worries for her but Glenn isn’t a fan of anything so I say go for it. Sarah’s sculpture is kind of weak (duh) and Laura doesn’t get much bad news. Alana starts to freak out again because Ve doesn’t like her character’s face so she starts working on a new one but then she has issues with popping her mold. Thank god for everyone around her because they help her pop and clean it again. Seriously it should be some kind of rule that you have to do your own shit because she constantly needs help with everything. I’m sure she has talent but she’s very needy.

Face Off Drinking game: Drink every time one of the contestants says, “I could go home” or some variation thereof. Seriously, so annoying. We get it. You could go home. That’s the nature of a reality show contest.

Brian Grazer has looked that way forever – it may actually be natural.

I had come to the conclusion at the beginning of this episode (or at the end of the last one, actually) that I simply could not take one more The Alana Show. Her neediness was simply becoming too distracting and her confessionals way too often. I don’t know if the issue is 1) her youth, b) her lack of talent or c) growing up being able to manipulate most people but I found myself muting the tv each time she spoke. So glad she’s gone.

As to the others, what happened to the wig Derek made? If Ve says it’s fabulous, you LEAVE IT ALONE. Sarah has talent but her lack of confidence will probably do her in. And her costumes are usually better than her makeup! Good thing she already won that money. Laura is seriously talented. He sculpting and use of color is amazing. I’m glad Nicole is back – I feel she went home too soon. Roy’s was okay but a little creepy. Actually, I find many Seuss characters creepy so I guess he was spot on.

2 guys and 3 girls – maybe the buzz about a woman being slated to win is accurate.

Soooo I guess now that Rod’s gone we don’t get to see anymore of his gorgeous model. Sigh…
I really hope Nicole or Laura win! And I refuse to give Joe’s comment about a woman winning because the show’s rigged any merit. It’s about time a girl won and you know if its Laura or Nicole they’ll actually do something with it, like the first season winner did. I mean what’s Rayce been up to since he won?

Lol that guy’s hair was my favorite. It was like a being in itself.

I thought this challenge was very “blah”. They were basing their creations on other Suess creations. Why not just have them create something original that will fit in with the Suess world, instead of putting their own twist on a character that already exsists? Ehhh.

@ timgunn, I was also getting tired of Alana’s “woe is me” attitude, and I think you are right…it was a combo of all three that got on my nerves. Especially being able to get just about anyone to help her. Once or twice is cool, but every freakin’ challenge? Ehh

Laura is kicking some butt, and I love it! I also like Roy too, he is mega-talented.

ahhhhhh Rod’s model :( we hardly knew ya

Roy’s downfall will be trying to do too much. I’ve liked Laura and Roy since the beginning. Either winning is fine by me.

Wait, don’t the contestants chose different models each week? Rod’s model could still be there.

@See-Jay, agreed and good point. They usually do select the heads off the shelf, but perhaps, as the comp has gone on, they have gotten to know the models and like their company, or style.

I’m happy to see Laura and Nicole doing so well, and I’ve been a fan of Roy’s from the beginning. I’d hire all three!!!

Alana seems to have stumbled when she couldn’t get enough help. She did have a challenge with her character, but honesty, they seemed to reward the suessian stuff . . . her’s reminded me of the baby pics in the flowers . . . she should have just been literal and got on with it. The bodies were easy, as they only had to costume them.

    I did think that droopy belly was fugly . . . sorry Roy . . .

I just spent an hour trying to find out the hot model’s name (multitasking is so much fun). The names aren’t posted anywhere. The full credits are not on SyFy’s site. I tried watching the episode on the site and pausing on the credits, but they don’t even show the credits on their own site. I will try again when I am at one of my friend’s homes who records in on their dvr. I did find one of the models from the body paining challenge last season, not sure if it is the same guy or not, http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3970480/

I will keep hunting if that is not the guy, I don’t think it is.
