Face Off Recap: Year of the Dragon

Day 3 and Jason is painting the head piece of the dragon much to Roy’s dislike. However Roy allows him to continue and doesn’t say a word to him because he doesn’t want to throw him under the bus if they fail because of color. He wants it to be Jason’s cross to wear but it’s kind of a dick move since it’s a partnership and it reflects on both of you. Laura and Alana’s cowl breaks in half leaving a huge gaping hole at the back of their costume’s neck. Alana wants to patch it up but Laura decides to just cover it with hair and continue moving on. Derek and Tommy both paint their cowl and face piece but separately which is a risk because Tommy says they have to maintain continuity. Eric and Sarah are painting this god awful color for their costume and Roy is stressed out because it’s time for Last Looks and they haven’t applied the face mask to their model yet. Eventually everything comes together during last looks and everyone heads to the judging arena.

The setting has been changed a bit to include Chinese lanterns and lots of shades of yellows and oranges. It’s time for the dance and holy shit it was kind of awesome. The dancers even jumped over each other in their costumes which was amazing because you have to remember the position they are in. For those who didn’t watch 2 people comprise the entire dragon in a Halloween Horse Costume type set up. Unfortunately, nothing breaks or falls off except a bunch of glitter. I was hoping for some failure. The judges take closer looks and Nicole and Roy’s model hisses at them which freaks them out a bit as it was unexpected. You know Glenn peed a little bit. Rod and Nicole’s piece is praised for the flags and incorporating something that takes the movement of the dance into consideration as well as having a Chinese feel to it. Jason and Roy’s piece is trashed for the paint job on the face and a lack of dragon-like quality. Alana and Laura’s piece had a good vibe and attention to detail like muck on the hooves and following the design from sketch to completion. Eric and Sarah’s piece is trashed for the paint job as well as the last minute horns that were sloppily stuck on. Derek and Tommy’s piece is praised for being the closest to the assignment in terms of a dragon and because it just looked stunning.

I agree with everything you stated about Glenn. His hair has always bothered me. I have never noticed his legs, will have to look for them next time.

Why are they having so many issues with coloring this season?

I wish they would make the bottom two do a quick-fire type challenge. It could be tied to what they messed up and put them on the chopping block. Like this week, the could have brought out two models with headpieces already on but they were just one solid color. The bottom two then had half an hour to paint. It necessarily might not change the judges mind, but it might help.

@carol I think they aren’t having so many issues with coloring this season, I think that typically the contestants have problems with the edging on their pieces. But this season their pieces aren’t falling apart and are applied properly. So the judges pick on the coloring. But maybe I’m wrong?

You would think they’d take the hint, do not use red or orange!! It never comes out correctly (at least by the judge’s opinion) – Jason’s head came out looking like a soccer ball painted like spiderman. I loved the white goat one.

Oh SG I love your ‘caps even more than the show– which certainly is much better this go-round. Just got to your comment about Jason, and saying that he is “a little stupid” is a wonderful take-off on “a little pregnant” which still makes me laugh. For some unknown reason.

    Back to the ‘cap.

I’ve been waiting for Alice in Zombieland as well!!! It’s my most anticipated episode! l also agree 100% with your Glenn comments, he’s such a dbag and looks so greasy and he’s completely forgotten how old he is! He dresses and styles himself like a lost 16 year old!

Great recap! I’m really loving this season due to the lack of fakey drama. As to Alana and her constant wounds, either she’s really bad at ‘cutting’, she’s hurting herself for attention or she’s way too clumsy to be allowed to handle anything sharp. All of which are bad considering her chosen profession.

I agreed with the judges for the most part and loved the designs. However, their main complaint seemed to be that the final products (save for one) were not ‘dragony’ enough. Seriously? You give a team 2 animals they have to use in the design AND expect it to look dragony? To me the whole 2 people in the costume thing was what made them all dragony.

Is anyone else hoping the next set of stitches Alana gets will be on her mouth? No? Just me then.

Oh, and I did love Roy’s comment that he and Jason should do well together as they ‘both work in the Haunted House industry’.

That’s an industry? Who knew and where do I sign up? But it does explain Jason’s paint job.

Didn’t Glen start working with Lady Gaga last season . . . I seem to recall him getting extra “16 year old ish” after that announcement, not that I blame her. I don’t care for his styling, but it’s that look on his face that screams ultimate Dbag to me. His advice in the workroom was pretty good tho.

I’m glad none of the heads came off . . . and man that was so last minute for all of them. They never explain the costuming, I don’t see anyone sewing, yet Sarah is credited with great costuming. Is it me?

There was a lot of ugly color combos this week. I think I liked the white one best too. The host was gorgeous this week!

@Juddfan, I was wondering where the costumes are coming from too. I remember last two seasons, there were two ladies that went around and asked each contestant what they wanted as far as costumes went. But they keep complimenting Sarah on her costumes, so I’m wondering if they just have a room full of stuff to choose from or if they are making it themselves.

I think they make them because I recall Sarah making hers before her prosthetics last week. I think Nicole was sewing something this week too. They edit so much crap together.

I am so lame I didn’t know Darek and Eric were brothers/twins till this episode. Alana gets on my nerves – she’s just so careless.

Well, with Alana’s track record I doubt she’ll survive until the end of the show.

I am confused about her, though. So, she’s 1) Ian from Tampa, FL’s girlfriend, 2) from (I think) Philadelphia, 3) lives in LA and finally 4) sounds like she’s from the Bronx.

Does she have multiple personality disorder?

K I wasn’t going to say anything because I don’t know for sure but I don’t think they are together anymore. There is no mention or pictures of the two on their facebooks which could be hidden but yea. It doesn’t even seem like Ian claims her though they are friends and have worked together.

I didn’t think Laura looked worried when Alana had to leave. I thought she was like, “I got this — take your drama and go.” And when Alana came back, Laura was like, “Uh…there’s really nothing left for you and your little fedora to do. Why don’t you stand out of the way by the sander?” Rod, on the other hand, cannot keep away from Alana and that is getting on my nerves somewhat.

About the color, I get the impression those red and orange looks are not choices the artists make, but mistakes that happen. I think I’ve heard two different people say something about a color “turning out” orange when they’d wanted something else.

I don’t think they actually make the costumes unless it’s something that they fabricate, like when Beki made that latex cape last season, but I think they fully design the costume and then the actual thing is created by a wardrobe department. Just because I’ve never seen anyone sewing and I cant even imagine them having enough time to make a full costume. But even if they don’t make the costumes, I would say that costuming is a legit skill…an interesting character with nice makeup but a craptastic costume is no good. And Sarah’s costume last week was indeed fabulous, as was her costume for the Cantina scene.

Glen is so ridiculous. You can tell he takes like three hours every morning to gel his hair into seemingly random shapes and to smudge his eyeliner just so. I love that you clocked his swole up arms and chest with his little bird legs, because my sister and I have taken to calling him Johnny Bravo for that exact reason.

@maryedith, YEAH. Since Day 1, he’s been like this fairy godfather to her, which is so random. I kind of wish we could see more about their personal stuff in that case, because I am so curious about how that happened. I think it’s cute though, maybe because I see it as more of a big brother type thing and I kind of love Rod. But if it turned out to be more of a sexual thing a la Conor and Megan, it would be less cute.

@chaos, I don’t know. I’m pretty much over Pixies in Distress and the Men Who Love Them. They tend to make life that much harder for people who Have Things to Do.
