They go off with their mentors and start planning in NYC. The winner will be decided on an audience vote.
Alton and Vampoor decide to film the pilot at Vampoor’s lair restaurant,. “Do or Dine” in Brooklyn.

Mi coffin, es su coffin
Alton has an idea that they should draw their inspiration from old shows. So they screen Alton’s Good Eats Caesar Salad Episode, and Vampoor will bring it into the 21st Century.

Mystery Dining Theatre 3000
In the pilot, Vampoor says he rebels because he thinks it is the right thing to do. He likes to find good food and make it CRAZY great!!! He creates an aspic concoction of chicken stock (both cold and hot), gelatin and all of the other ingredients that go into Caesar Salad Dressing. He instructs us to refrigerate the aspic mixture for 4 hours, until it’s “Jiggly.”

Brains in aspic
He then grills some romaine lettuce hearts and then slices off strips of the set aspic and places it on top of the grilled lettuce.

Don’t make me clip you across the lug hole
It just melts into the lettuce and is “supple and delicious.”

Bobby and Gangster meet up at Ed’s Lobster Bar in NYC and Gangster will talk to the owner, eat some of the food and then go cook her own food. Gangster shows up dressed like a lobster. She samples the clam chowder and talks to the owner about how it just doesn’t get any fresher- you catch it and cook it. She says “I’m always claming.”

I’m always claming!
Ok, enough about your dating life… In her own “outdoor” kitchen she makes some clams with chorizo and garlic. They do look delicious. Aside from the time it takes to clean clams- they are, otherwise, pretty easy to cook. Gangster is so passionate and makes it look easy- she gives us “My New England In a Bowl.” Bobby is really happy with her pilot.

Plus I’m pretty sure she can kick my ass
For Martie, it’s now or never and if this doesn’t happen for her now, it probably never will. This is the culmination of 50 years. For her pilot, Alton thinks she should host a party. So she will cook a recipe and then they will show her dancing on tables and doing upside down keg hits. Well… maybe not that last part. Alton says that “the only thing that matters is you being you.”

my little girl is all growed up
If you like it, spread it!:

I honestly don’t think I would watch any of thier shows.
I never watch any of their shows (although I might watch gangster’s cause I love seafood), I just like watching the competition. That whole thing with Susie going on and on with the tears, and it’s torture, bitch please you knew you were keeping both of Alton’s peeps!!
I love the idea of Justin taking an episode of Good Eats every week and turning it on its head…it’s perfect!
I think that Justin will win, and over time, I think he’ll be the next Food Network Star to actually make something of himself….
Really — Ivan made a dish with canned corn. Tacky.
i hope they don’t do the mentor thing next season
I didn’t think it was tacky…he specifically mentioned that he made it with canned corn because that’s what his family was able to get from the food pantry. And since his POV is family-friendly meals on a budget, it fits right in. When you have a big family and not alot of money or time to cook for them, canned and frozen produce are definitely your friends.
I just wish his food was a little more health conscious.
I LOVED Vampoor’s show! And I so would watch Ivan’s show…canned corn or not, I would completely make that dish.
My LOL moment came when Gangsta tells the camera, “My FAVORITE food is clams.” Ha!! We didn’t need you to tell us THAT, Gangsta, it’s pretty obvious!
@featherhead
” I just like watching the competition. That whole thing with Susie going on and on with the tears, and it’s torture, bitch please you knew you were keeping both of Alton’s peeps!!”
So bloody true Featherhead.

“i hope they don’t do the mentor thing next season”
I agree, I think the mentor thing ruined it.
great recap! This show is a train wreck- yet I love it so
Yvan really stepped it up- he is just so adorable I want to cover him in hot sauce! Budget friendly simple food I would watch
Vampoor is such a mini Alton and I love alton so Vampoor skewing good eats would be one I’d watch- gelatinous caesar salad- yes please!
I am not as into clams as gangsta and frankly a party at marties house kinda scares me – the boys got my votes.
This is my first season watching. I would cook Yvan’s grossly unhealthy mac ‘n cheese because it’s easy and cheap, but I’d watch Justin’s show because it’s fascinating to watch his bizarro cooking. Now if Yvan cooks like that every week, he’d better watch his back when he’s around Paula Deen. From her reaction to Marti, she won’t allow any pretenders.
I kinda liked the mentor thing this year. I did not like the way they tried to keep the numbers even.
I’m with Sel, they should’ve let it be a true competition and not keep even numbers the whole time. I was very sorry to see Ippy go, I would’ve loved his show.
I voted 10 times for Justin, 5 for Michelle and none for the other two.
I couldn’t vote! For some reason, since I use my iPad, the Facebook thing was all convoluted… I don’t understand why I couldn’t just vote on the FoodNetwork site.
@Sel- I think the voting closed on Tuesday evening- so that is probably why.
Ippy got robbed. Clam loving Anne Burrell and Martie were not very good. I miss Rock n Roll guy and the made from scratch guy….
I am sorry to see Ippy go – I had high hopes for him. Vampoor for the win!
MsRed – Your screenshot of Meemaw Martie was hilarious – I think that guy on the shrimp boat threw himself at a gator. I don’t know if this is just me – but I never got the pickling recipe from her for the shrimp. We are not only going to have a chef, a caterer, and a bartender, but a tipsy party guest who traps you in the kitchen with endless stories about her neighbors – that is where that show is going.
Yvan was a cutie on his promo. I don’t know about gangsta – how would her NE seafood POV work after a while?
Nooo!! Not Ippy!!
I’m so disappointed they didn’t pick him. But of the remaining contestants, I thought Justin’s pilot was absolutely awesome… up to this point, I’ve never bothered to watch the shows of any of the Food Network Star winners because they’ve just just been some more boring cooking and talking, however I would definitely watch a show like Justin’s. I thought that was very creative of them.
@MisRed I tried to vote within the window -just didn’t post here until later.
I’m so sad Ippy’s gone – I thought his idea of Italian-Hawaiian fusion was really fresh and interesting, and he was really sexy. What a shame.
