Episode 16 – The Thing with Feathers
“Sing my precious little golden bird, sing! I have hung my golden slipper around your neck.”
Nick decides that he and Juliette need to get away to regroup their relationship so he takes her to a cabin in the woods. On the way he gets lost and stops at a house to ask for directions but while a dectective’s job is never done, neither is a Grimms when he realizes that his neighbor is a Klaustreich named Tim. Tim lives with his girlfriend Robin who Juliette notices is very scared. Meanwhile, Hank is still stalking Adalind and sees a man entering her home after she ignores his phone call. Later when the man leaves he confronts him and tells him to never contact her again. It’s revealed that the man was hired by Renard to make Hank even more jealous. Turning their plan up, Adalind finally accepts a dinner request from Hank. Nick on the other hand finds out through Monroe that the woman staying with the Klaustreich is a Seltenvogel, a creature thought to be extinct that harvests a gold egg which is why the Klaustreich is with her. After a failed attempt to escape, Robin is dragged back to the cabin by Tim who force feeds her in order to keep her egg healthy. After much concern, Nick goes and helps Robin to escape but has to cut her egg out or risk her dying in the woods. With Rosalie and Monroe’s help the egg is released but Tim arrives and takes it with Nick in hot pursuit. Tim drops the egg which shatters into tiny pieces rendering it worthless. Later that night, Nick proposes to Juliette but she declines though she deeply loves him saying that he has to let her back in as he has become distant.

Episode 17 – Love Sick
“Forgive me for the evil I have done you; my mother drove me to it; it was done against my will.”
Hank invites Nick and Juliette to meet the woman he has fallen for which is revealed to be Adalind, the Hexenbeist who killed Nick’s Aunt. Nick is convinced that she is up to no good and pulls her aside to tell her to leave Hank alone since Nick is who she wants. Renard is brought by gunpoint to an abandoned warehouse and told that he needs to produce the key that Nick was given after his Aunt Marie died or they will get it themselves. Renard shoots both men, one being his cousin, after not being able to reason with them. He meets with Adalind’s mom to enlist her help to get Adalind motivated to get the key from Nick. He promises that their help will be remembered in the end. Nick and Hank are called from dinner to the scene of Renard’s shooting which he has staged. They find a cell phone of one of the victims but Nick notices that Wu is acting strange, namely eating chap stick and then denying it. Back at the station, Wu starts to complain about stomach problems and then passes out which gives Renard enough time to snag the phone found at the scene. Adaline meets with her mother and admits that she loves Renard and is starting to get tired of this plan to get Hank. Hank calls to meet with her and she declines but offers a romantic dinner the next night as her mother is in town visiting. Nick hears from Wu’s doctor and sees all the weird shit he has eaten and calls Rosalie and Monroe. The group figures out that the spell they previously thought he was under was incorrect and that he is feeling the effects of the spell Hank is under. Nick and Renard talk the next day about the crime and though the phone came up clean, Nick believes a third man was involved which Renard dismisses. Rosalie and Monroe figure out an antidote for the potion and test it out successfully on Wu before heading over to administer it to Hank. However they find it is too late as Hank has slept with Adalind rendering the antidote useless. Adalind demands the key from Nick or Hank will die the next morning so they meet up in the park to violently duke it out once and for all. Rosalie tells Nick that to break the spell they need the blood of a Grimm, not a Hexenbiest, to spill. As he fights Adalind, he pins her down and kisses her which causes her to bite his lip spilling his blood into her mouth. Adalind is stripped of her powers and Hank recovers. Adalind goes to visit her mother for comfort and finds her with Renard. They turn her away as she is now useless without her powers and has become just another pretty girl. Nick meanwhile discovers that the key given to him has a fancy imprint on it but he still doesn’t know its importance.

So glad these are getting recapped again! Thanks, SG!
Love love love this show. Love the backstory they are finally starting to develop. My only complaint is that Nick reveals himself way too often. He’s not only a Grimm and needs to protect himself and Juliette, but he’s also a cop and NO cop goes around revealing such personal stuff. Especially the episode with the Reapers – it’s like he’s in an AA meeting: “Hi, I’m Det. Nick and I’m a Grimm”. I know I’m nitpicking, and it’s a minor irritation. I’m worried for them – he needs to move from his very well known residence.
Also, when Juliette cooked dinner for Monroe, did she really cook “vegan salmon” cuz that sounded gross.
Otherwise, looking forward to season 2!
I’ve been wondering the same thing about Juliette, Nick is obviously hiding ‘something’ from her. She’s either stupid or maybe knows his secret? I don’t know, but keeping a secret that big is just him being a douche. If he can’t trust her enough to tell her what he is, he shouldn’t be marrying her.
I don’t think the Wesen reveal themselves to Nick as much as him being a Grimm forces them to reveal themselves to him. It’s something only he and the Wesen are aware of at the time which is why they usually both get so squirrelly after it happens. What I don’t understand is how Renard can camouflage what he is from Nick and also how long has he known what Nick is. Because even before Aunt Marie came to town and told him about their family legacy Nick saw Adalind for a Hexenbiest.
As for Juliette and Hank, I see their not knowing or picking up on Nick as being more willful ignorance than naivete. They’ve both commented on how he’s been acting differently, and Juliette turned down his proposal because of it, but as long as they don’t know the truth it doesn’t exist to them.
I think this would be a much better show, and less cluttered, if they got rid of the Hank and Juliette characters, revealed to Nick that Reynard is a wessen and made Eddie more of a partner to Nick. They can keep Rosalee because her character contributes energy to the show and advances the plot.
Yay! I’ve missed being able to read about and discuss this! Flippit listens.
I have thought from the beginning of the season that Juliette will die before we get to Season Two. When the hot witch stayed alive and dewitched, my suspicion was strenghened. Having Nick tied down to a sweet but kind of plain girlfriend was a great way to establish his character as a good guy, but shows like this thrive on romantic spice and there just isn’t any in that relationship.
Not, by the way that I actually think Blondey Witch is hot. She totally annoys me. But I’m sure I’m in the minority on this.
Yippeeeee!. Happy this recap is back
Thanks so much for recapping this clever show. The Wikipedia page on the Creatures of Grimm adds a lot of fun because I think the backstory created for all the creatures is so great. The jägerbär disenbowels victims; they tend to be mortage lenders, lawyers, and politicians., etc. The schakale are jackal-like thieves; Hitler was one. We know that Captain Renard is royalty, as he was addressed as “your highness”. And I adore Monroe in all his quirkiness and his relationship with Nick.
Maryedith, you’re not alone. Blondey drives me nuts, too. I hope she’s gone, but considering she was even in the pilot, I doubt she’ll ever truly leave us. Maybe she can pull a Mystique and help Nick bring Renard down. That “you’re just a pretty girl” totally brought me back to Magneto’s looking at a now human Mystique and sighing “and she was so beautiful” before leaving.
@Vallegirl, I think the Wessen show themselves to other Wessen and Grimms when they are feeling extreme emotions. That’s why Nick can’t see if a dead body is a person or a Wessen. I also think the captain is so super icy and in control that is why he never reveals himself to Nick or to any of the other Wessen. Does that make any sense?
