Grimm Catch-ups: Episodes 14 – 19

Episode 18 – Cat and Mouse

“‘Perhaps some accident has befallen him,’ said the king, and the next day he sent out two more huntsmen who were to search for him.’”

Within the Wesen community there is a secret society called the Varrat who control various aspects in the government and those in power. Ian Harmon is fleeing the Varrat who have followed him to Portland where he ends up at Rosalie’s shop looking for her brother. He also asks for assistance as he was shot while fleeing the Varrat. Rosalie was previously in a relationship with Ian and knows his importance to the Wesen community so she agrees to help him though it puts her in grave danger. She enlists the help of Monroe who reluctantly agrees to help. Ian had been pursued by a man named Waltz who visits with Renard to ask for his assistance (Does everyone know how important Renard is?) and tells him that High Command has not been happy that many resistance members have found safety in Portland. Renard declines to help and Waltz threatens him before leaving. Hank and Nick investigate Ian’s shooting but have no luck uncovering much information. Waltz is in pursuit of Ian and finds a bartender who reveals that a camera shop owner forges documents and perhaps Ian went there. The bartender is killed and as Nick and Hank investigate the scene, Waltz himself visits Nick as a possible witness to gather more information on finding Ian. Waltz visits the camera shop owner and threatens him to help him find Ian who will likely visit him to get forged documents and continue traveling. Nick meets with Rosalie, Monroe and Ian whom he believes killed the bartender. Nick attempts to arrest Ian but Rosalie and Monroe explain it wasn’t possible that Ian killed him and they realize it was Waltz whom Nick met earlier. It’s explained to Nick that the resistance are working to stop the corruption of the Varrat and that Ian is a very valuable member who needs Nick’s protection. Rosalie goes to get Ian’s new passport from the camera shop owner and unknowingly leads Waltz back to Ian who had been hiding at the shop. Waltz pretends to be a customer but the camera shop owner had slipped a warning into Ian’s documents but it’s too late as she is held captive in exchange for Ian. Monroe and Nick fool Waltz by pretending to be customers and save Rosalie. Ian comes in and shoots Waltz dead in front of Nick. Nick is torn between his duties as a detective and his life as a Grimm. He arrests Ian even though Rosalie pleads with him that the Verrat will kill him in jail. However, Nick brings Ian to a bus station and lets him go with cash and a new passport but warns him not to return. It seems this time being a Grimm is more important than being a detective.

Episode 19 – Leave it to Beavers

“‘Wait!’ the troll said, jumping in front of him. ‘This is my toll bridge. You have to pay a penny to cross.’”

Nick and Monroe start exploring Aunt Marie’s trailer and find a cache of ancient weapons which they test out and find Nick has a natural ability to wield them. Robert, a Eisbiber, is at a construction site where he is meeting with Sal, a Hasslich that he owes money. He decides that he is no longer going to allow Sal to extort him and plans to head to the DA. Sal, not agreeing with this decision, kills Robert by burying him in cement. Sal doesn’t realize that Arnold, another Eisbiber, had been nearby and witnessed the entire murder. Arnold calls 911 and then goes into hiding as Eisbiber are not known for being brave. Hank and Nick investigate the murder and trace the 911 call to Arnold so they go to his house and try to speak with him. Nick realizes that Arnold is friends with two other Eisbiber that he has previously met, one being the refrigerator repairman. Juliette wants to invite Monroe over for dinner but Nick is resistant because everything they do is Grimm related and hard to explain without giving away who Nick really is. Nick and Hank go and visit with Sal as they found he was supposed to meet with Robert that night. His goons give him an alibi but Nick and Hank are unconvinced. Sal is not pleased with his plans in danger and states that Nick is a Grimm that needs to be dealt with before he can  further interfere with their business. Nick meets with Bud, the repairman Eisbiber, who admits that he knows Arnold and reveals he works at the construction site and that Hasslich always want a cut in bridge construction similar to paying the troll toll. Bud lies to Nick and tells him he has no idea where Arnold could be. After Nick leaves, Bud visits Arnold at a friend’s basement and convinces him to vote at the next Eisbiber lodge meeting on whether he should come forward to testify against Sal. Monroe comes over for dinner with  Juliette and Nick and explains they met during one of Nick’s cases (which is true) but things get awkward and their stories get twisted. Monroe deflects by asking for the recipe of the meal Juliette has created for them. Nick attends the lodge meeting with Bud and pleads for Arnold to come forward but some of the Eisbiber are nervous to change the status quo as they are not brave creatures by nature and fear retaliation. The vote is for Arnold to stay hidden and Bud is ashamed of his people who had the chance to stand up with a Grimm on their side. This causes Arnold to decide to be brave for once and come forward. Sal, meanwhile, believes that he needs to get rid of Nick in order to protect himself and his business so he hires two Reapers to dispatch Nick. Nick arrests Sal and Arnold identifies him. They decide it’s best if Arnold hides at the lodge until the trial. Nick volunteers to drive him to the lodge but is unaware of the Reapers that have started to follow him. Nick fights with the Reapers until one accidentally beheads the other which gives Nick time to take him out. He calls Monroe to help dispose of the bodies but they realize that if the do not send a message, more will continue to come. Nick comes home to tons of gift baskets from the Eisbiber community as gratitude for saving Arnold.  Juliette questions exactly what Nick did but he just replies that he was doing his job. The Head Reaper who dispatched the others on Nick receives a box from him with the heads of the Reapers and a note saying to send his best next time.

Love love love this show. Love the backstory they are finally starting to develop. My only complaint is that Nick reveals himself way too often. He’s not only a Grimm and needs to protect himself and Juliette, but he’s also a cop and NO cop goes around revealing such personal stuff. Especially the episode with the Reapers – it’s like he’s in an AA meeting: “Hi, I’m Det. Nick and I’m a Grimm”. I know I’m nitpicking, and it’s a minor irritation. I’m worried for them – he needs to move from his very well known residence.

Also, when Juliette cooked dinner for Monroe, did she really cook “vegan salmon” cuz that sounded gross.

Otherwise, looking forward to season 2!

I’ve been wondering the same thing about Juliette, Nick is obviously hiding ‘something’ from her. She’s either stupid or maybe knows his secret? I don’t know, but keeping a secret that big is just him being a douche. If he can’t trust her enough to tell her what he is, he shouldn’t be marrying her.

I don’t think the Wesen reveal themselves to Nick as much as him being a Grimm forces them to reveal themselves to him. It’s something only he and the Wesen are aware of at the time which is why they usually both get so squirrelly after it happens. What I don’t understand is how Renard can camouflage what he is from Nick and also how long has he known what Nick is. Because even before Aunt Marie came to town and told him about their family legacy Nick saw Adalind for a Hexenbiest.

As for Juliette and Hank, I see their not knowing or picking up on Nick as being more willful ignorance than naivete. They’ve both commented on how he’s been acting differently, and Juliette turned down his proposal because of it, but as long as they don’t know the truth it doesn’t exist to them.

I think this would be a much better show, and less cluttered, if they got rid of the Hank and Juliette characters, revealed to Nick that Reynard is a wessen and made Eddie more of a partner to Nick. They can keep Rosalee because her character contributes energy to the show and advances the plot.

I have thought from the beginning of the season that Juliette will die before we get to Season Two. When the hot witch stayed alive and dewitched, my suspicion was strenghened. Having Nick tied down to a sweet but kind of plain girlfriend was a great way to establish his character as a good guy, but shows like this thrive on romantic spice and there just isn’t any in that relationship.

Not, by the way that I actually think Blondey Witch is hot. She totally annoys me. But I’m sure I’m in the minority on this.

Thanks so much for recapping this clever show. The Wikipedia page on the Creatures of Grimm adds a lot of fun because I think the backstory created for all the creatures is so great. The jägerbär disenbowels victims; they tend to be mortage lenders, lawyers, and politicians., etc. The schakale are jackal-like thieves; Hitler was one. We know that Captain Renard is royalty, as he was addressed as “your highness”. And I adore Monroe in all his quirkiness and his relationship with Nick.

Maryedith, you’re not alone. Blondey drives me nuts, too. I hope she’s gone, but considering she was even in the pilot, I doubt she’ll ever truly leave us. Maybe she can pull a Mystique and help Nick bring Renard down. That “you’re just a pretty girl” totally brought me back to Magneto’s looking at a now human Mystique and sighing “and she was so beautiful” before leaving.

@Vallegirl, I think the Wessen show themselves to other Wessen and Grimms when they are feeling extreme emotions. That’s why Nick can’t see if a dead body is a person or a Wessen. I also think the captain is so super icy and in control that is why he never reveals himself to Nick or to any of the other Wessen. Does that make any sense?
