Homeland Recap: One Fine Day

“Sometimes it seems like we’re all living in some kind of prison. And the crime is how much we hate ourselves.”

Hola my terror-loving Gasmites!!

Last time on This is Your Terrorist, Carrie’s mission in Beirut did not go as planned when a last minute text from Brody warned Abu Nazir of the impending assassination. That guy might’ve gotten away, but Carrie definitely proved herself to be fully back in spy mode when she ran into Fatima’s apartment and grabbed a bundle of documents in hopes of garnering more intel on Nazir. She went home thankless and thoughtful.

What she didn’t know was she managed to retrieve a video hidden in the secret compartment of the shoulderbag she took to carry documents. That video was viewed by Saul and found to be the goodbye videography of one Nicholas Brody, confessing to the VP assassination plot that went awry last season. Intrigue, here we come!

~~~
We open to find Saul high-tailing it back to the US. Where he immediately vindicates Carrie, arrests Brody and ends the series early!
That’s all folks!
Just kidding, that can’t happen. On his way through security, Saul is pulled aside and frisked in a private room. The authoritative looking man in charge demands the key to Saul’s diplomatic case, not something Lebanese security would do, Saul mentions, unless they are working for Hezbollah.
“Hey, it doesn’t feel like you’re using gloves back there”
I have a feeling Saul is too smart and wary to have the video in the briefcase but the despondent look on his face tells me he is resigned to this going badly. Sure enough, a knife is procured to cut into the lining of the briefcase and there is the disk. Saul threatens the man with retaliation from the US Government if they withhold diplomatic property, but the disk is confiscated and he is instructed to get on his flight and stay the hell out of Beirut in future. Frankly the fact that he is released at all surprises me, and openly admitting he is Jewish during the process surely didn’t earn him any bonus points.
He sits contemplatively on the plane and I have to think he has swapped disks and kept the true evidence on his person, right??
Even better, the OTHER secret compartment! Gets ‘em every time!
~~~

In VA we find Carrie feverishly typing up her Summer Homework Assignment: I went to Beirut to catch a Terrorist and all I got out of it was this lousy shoulder bag”. Her father checks in on her, and like one whackjob to another tells her to relax and go to bed. She tries to reassure him that she’s on top of the world, but that’s kind of what concerns him.

“Please Daddy, just one more hour??”

    Bravo MrsMiaWallace! Fantastic recaps–just the right amount of snark and I love how you point out all the inconsistencies and inaccuracies that drive me nuts! Where is their son?? With Dexter’s little boy? Favorite line–”I’m going to hump the patriotism back in you”.

    This show just keeps getting better and better. There has to be some kind of twist or an incomplete video ? No way can they wrap this up so fast. I am anxious to see how it plays out. Good job with the recap. Luckily, Carrie can always steal more of her dads pills…or hit up her sister.

    Awesome recap. Still not sure how you manage to bring humor into this show but keep up the good work!

    I believe the preview showed Estes saying something about how Carrie was right all along, as though he had seen the video. I think what’s about to happen is some Departed-esque plot: you send a mole into my group (CIA will try to get Carrie back in with Brody); I send one to yours (Brtish journalist lady will make sure he starts hooking up with Carrie again).

    If the bomb maker was truly loyal to the “cause,” would he really give Brody up that easily? The whole flat tire/Falling on a conveniently placed spike annoyed me. Carrie’s struggles are SO believable, while Brody’s just get more ridiculous. I think they need to resolve his plot this season, then keep the show going with Carrie & Co still after Nazir or some other group.

    I commented last week that I was hoping Mike and the drunk friend would somehow team up with Carrie to help being Brody down. His reaction to Jessica’s news of Brody’s affair makes it seem like that might happen!

    I agree the Brody situation is getting weird. However, I would not want to see Brody gone. Maybe they will turn him to get to Nazir. I would like to see him stay on the show. I guess he could use the brain washing excuse. I have to see the tape again to see the background. If it looks like it could have been made anywhere he could say the terrorist coerced him into making it after being tortured for 8 yrs.

    I had the exact same thought regarding the freeform jazz music being the very last thing that Carrie should listen to when trying to calm herself. I’m half tempted to suggest to the writers that they write in a Norah Jones Muzak mix tape for Carrie when she’s trying maintain some semblance of control when she’s about to enter a high-stakes, nerve fraying situation. That…..or a never ending loop Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”.

    (LMAO, “what about this face doesn’t look sane?”= coffee spray on my iPad)
