Ink Master Recap: Better Than Words?

Just when you thought shit couldn’t get more fucked up…they go and do something even worse than sending Clint home. Last week, Jamie got sent home over Sarah because he doesn’t have any tattoos. I like how they conveniently forgot to mention that most of the arguments against Jamie were regarding his lack of tattoos, makes his “Fuck Them” seem like he was just a bitter loser when it wasn’t the case.

Sebastian and Jesse are really surprised that Sarah came back over Jamie who has been well-rounded the entire competition. Even Steve spoke out saying that Jamie should not have been the one to leave and surprisingly Sarah is pretty quiet. All she says is that she tried to do a kick-ass piece outside of her comfort zone, acknowledges her shitty background behind the wolf and then spews some crap about adversity and shining through shit. If Sarah wins, I will probably never recap this show again because she’s not a consistent artist and that’s aside from what I think of her personality.

The artists walk into the loft and see Oliver tattooing the Jägermeister logo the size of a quarter on some random dude’s leg. Why you would want such a small tattoo in such a prominent area is beyond me…I’m still confused why you want the Jägermeister logo in the first place. The Flash Challenge is to replicate the logo as small or smaller than Oliver’s within a one hour time period even though Oliver completed his in half an hour. Steve decides to go a bit smaller and Sarah wants to prove she’s better than Steve so she goes even smaller than Steve. It’s like watching a pissing contest unfold in front of you. Jesse’s googly eyes aren’t doing him justice because he can’t focus on the piece. Sebastian thinks he should win because precision is his thing but Steve is confused as to why he would add more to the image by copying the actual logo from the bottle.

Oliver points out that he picked the size of his image for a reason and going too small might be shooting yourself in the foot. Oliver likes Steve’s image and Chris even notes that it is a toss up between his and Oliver’s piece. Kat doesn’t fair as well and Sebastian gets called out for not following the stencil provided to him. I think it’s kind of bullshit to nitpick Sebastian considering he did the legit logo but the judges are over this group and using anything they can to kick people out. The winner is Steve and he gets to pick the canvas’ for the Elimination Challenge. I don’t care for Steve’s work but I’m really glad he won because when he wins he complains less.

Sebastian and Steve turned their tattoo subjects into Black men. Good job guys!! (sheesh)

Tattoo Baby’s tatt was really good! I love how she met the guy afterwards. I bet he loved a hot chick did it, too.

The picture Jesse had to work with, she was really beautiful! The tattoo…ehh not so much. If that cheek of hers were less chubby, that would have made a big difference. Oh god I just noticed her totally unecessary double chin. EEK

I gotta hand it to him though, he’s kind of a one-trick pony when it comes to his design of tatts, but he worked his ass off and tried really hard when he was out of his element……unlike many others who bitched and complained the entire time. Also, he was a cool guy all around. Im gonna miss him on the show!

Sarah needs to quit making her clients change what they want. Like, that needs to stop now. And the way she gets praised makes me want to punch her in the face! Calm down, crazy! At this point I can’t with this group anymore, except for maybe Kat.

@annie: who are you going for to win? Lol I usually agree with you, so I’ll just go with whomever you pick.

Valleygirl, I am really liking Tattoo Baby (AKA Kat) right now. For the past few weeks she has delivered some really solid tattoos, many of which were beyond her comfort zone (ie. Yoda).

Honestly, Steve’s portrait tattoo disappointed me so much, I dont think he deserves to win. Before that, I thought he had a pretty good chance. Sarah’s talented too, but….her annoying “IM A FIGHTER!!” attitude seems to mess up alot of her tattoos. And Sebastian? I dunno why he’s even there at all!! What if he won? HAHAHA

    Who are you rooting for???

I’m really annoyed that Sarah didn’t do color, because that baby had the biggest, most beautiful blue eyes, and to me, that’s what really made the image striking.
Black and white didn’t do it any justice, and I’m also tired of her pushing her clients away from what they want and into what she thinks will please the judges. The judges aren’t the ones who have to walk around with that stuff for the rest of their lives. And Sarah is a repeat offender, but she’s definitely not the only one. It’s actually disturbing to see how many tattoo artists put themselves above their clients.

I wish the mom had stood her ground.
She put all that time and effort into making that baby and growing him and expelling him and keeping him alive and shit, and that’s really hard work. If she wants him immortalized in color on her body, then that’s her right.

And Sarah’s stupid speeches, omg send that bitch home already!
My only consolation is that she’s definitely not going to win.
Not with Katherine there, and definitely not with Steve there.
Plus, now that Chris Nunez and my beloved Oliver have personally witnessed the maelstrom of demonic batshit craziness that lurks within, they’ll never give her the title. If they don’t give it to someone who lacks tattoos, they sure aren’t gonna give it to someone who lacks sanity.
Should have kept that little flaw under wraps, boo.

Even though I wish to God that Sebastian had gone home, I understand why Jesse had to go.
The picture was so beautiful, and had all this light and character to it, and it became this big black, fat blob. And the whole time, the canvas was just going on about how much everyone in the family idolizes her and all that, only for it to come out so shitty. I can’t even imagine how the canvas must have felt looking at it for the first time. Or how he’ll feel waking up to it every morning for the rest of his life. Jesse definitely needed to go home, and it’s probably better for him that the canvas not know exactly where to find him.
He still better sleep with one eye open though. People get killed for less smh.

    Sebastian definitely going home next.
And I was so happy about the abundance of Oliver in this episode. More Oliver every day!

@chaos, I was thinking Sarah could have done the black and white, with his eyes being blue. Do you think that would have worked out? I think it would have looked cool.

I am actually glad she didnt do the color, sometimes color portraits look “cartoony” if the ink is too bright, or not real-looking enough. I dont know if you watch Teen Mom, but I just keep thinking of that God-awful “Leah” tattoo Amber has. haha!

@annie, Idk…I know that I love B&W photographs with a single color accent, but in a tattoo, I have no idea haha. I feel like it could have gone either way though, depending on the saturation and shades of blue she put in.

If she did it right, it could have looked beautiful.
If she did it wrong, it could have looked like a baby White Walker from Game of Thrones.

It’s interesting though that it’s not even something that they discussed. I think it would have been a nice compromise, because I think even the mom said that she was pretty married to the blue in her son’s eyes being in the tattoo.

@annie: I was thinking of going with Kat too. So, go Kat! I think it’ll be a toss up between her and Steve though unless Sarah gets off the crazy train (lol as if). I’ll flip a table Tre style if Sebastian wins! Don’t even joke about that.
Although this show took a nose dive since my bby Clint got booted so who knows?

Kat ftw! I was really hoping that mom would just walk out on Sarah, and tell the judges \she won’t do what I asked for.\ @chaos, you are spot on that the canvas has to live with the tattoo forever.

Jesse’s portrait was horrible. IRL, most artists can have their specialty and not do things outside of it. But since this show is supposedly about who is the most well rounded (hey, Jesse, did you even watch the first season? Yes? How were you not prepared, then?), he should never have been selected for this show.

Kat had better win this thing: she’s been the best rounded and most consistent of the artists.

Yes, Jesse made an unholy mess of that portrait and yes, he should have been better prepared. But they ALL should have been better prepared. Don’t forget, Jesse is the one who made it through the traditional Japanese tattoo with relative success, while Steve (who screwed the pooch on his koi dragon) tried to whine that that wasn’t \what he did.\ Honestly, I would’ve kicked Sebastian out for his lousy attitude and his poor execution of what he claims is his specialty. His work hasn’t been outstanding at any phase of the competition and I’m stunned he’s survived this long.

I’ll admit that I want Kat to win in part because the other remaining contestants are so obnoxious: Sebastian’s a jerk (who likes to HURT clients who annoy him!), Steve’s a whiner, and Sarah’s a nutcase who bullies her clients. In terms of art, I’d put Kat on top too. Her Yoda was amazing! Steve and Sarah have had some incredible work, but also some awful flops. Sebastian is mediocre at best.

But I stopped understanding this competition when Jamie was kicked out on sheer prejudice because he didn’t have any tattoos.

So long as the judges really don’t care if the canvas likes the tat or not, then why should the artists? Would it be fair for someone to stay because they did a bad tat and the client LOVED it – and someone who did a great tat but the client hated it goes home?

I, too, hate the way Sarah always insists on changing what the client wants however, doing what they know the judges want is what gets the win. And based on that, Kat should win. I have yet to see a her try to bend a clients wishes to suit her skills. Her clients always seem happy and her work is really good AND consistent.

I didn’t want Jesse to win. Sure, the guy has skills in New School but is pretty much a one trick pony, and his portrait proved it. He said himself that he hadn’t done one in 10 years, and the giant dark blob of a tattoo that he made of a pretty lady looking like Mr Potato Head (good luck trying to cover that up) should have gotten him a rebuke from the wearer on the finale, not the whiney woman who was complaining about a tattoo which was not even arguably not the best one she had (not that any tatt wasn’t putting lipstick on a crazy pig in her case).
Tattoo Baby was the most improved artist in the competition, and the fact that Sebastian beat her with his awful demon/angel tatt on thigh the whining King Mo is beyond belief. Tattoo Baby is at least a 60% better tattoo artist over Sebastian.
