What did you all think of this Lane arc? What is left for next week’s episode? To me, Lane’s suicide was not that convincing. Lane’s always been something of a doofy waffler, and I just don’t see him having enough conviction to want to die for good. As I’ve said before, I also found the whole check situation to be a stretch. I can easily see Lane lying to wife and family, but not to Don and Joan. I thought we were going to get some deeper explanation of Lane’s character after the Dolores incident, where he came off as a total creeper. Instead, he just deteriorated quickly. Lane’s always been one of my favorite characters, with his awkward sweetness and bumbling attempts to be listened to. I liked having a character around who doesn’t have the glossy sheen of confidence of every other guy on Wall Street.
Another question I have is whether we saw Lane’s true colors this week. I’d like to think he was at his worst this season, in the embezzlement, and especially in trying to kiss and then tonight making inappropriate comments to Joan. (I always judge characters based more on their interaction with each other than with the business.) Maybe he thought acting like all the other jerks was the only way to save himself. Maybe he felt he was missing out by always being the nice guy. I don’t know. I just don’t like how he left. I’ll also miss the actor, Jared Harris, who I’ll always think of as a Fringe villain. The only thing I think was very Lane was his suicide letter – a typical resignation letter, with no personal touch.
