Minicap: Elementary

It’s so — let’s see . . . easy? no.  basic?  no.  simple?  no. . . . I ‘ve got it!  Elementary!

Howdy, Gasmii!  I’m back from my break and excited to be recapping this show.  It’s my first scripted series series that admits to being scripted.

I’m going to keep these Minicaps pretty brief, since this series is, after all, a mystery and unlike PBS’ Sherlock, this show isn’t using the Conan Doyle stories. So there won’t be any spoilers in the Minicaps.  Just be sure to watch the show before you read the full Recaps though!

For now, let’s just say that the lead character is a drug-addicted Brit

No, not that one.

Who has a sidekick/companion

Wrong show, pal.

And is super smart

Close.  BTW who wouldn’t want to see Stephen Hawking as a supersleuth?

You gotta love a guy who likes to do this

I do this ALL THE TIME.  Mostly because I don’t have a working fireplace and hey, when it’s winter I want a cozy fire.  Also sometimes I just like to stare at the flames.  Now I want to listen to Pyromania.

I will, of course, have a big fat recap soon with all the details from this week’s ep.  I’m looking forward to spending the season with you, Gasmii!

See you soon!

Haven’t seen it yet, but plan to. So, just what does Jonny Lee Miller have on the bigwigs at the networks? This is what, his 3rd series? Maybe three’s the charm ’cause the previous ones bombed.

Tried this show, and HATED IT. It’s like someone took Goren from Criminal Intent and the Mentalist and put them in a blender…then removed any charm, quirks, or personality but added an accent.

CBS blew it on this one.

@cattyfan, as one feline to another, I have to believe what you say. Missed the epi, but had high hopes for the rest of the season.

Like PennyD, I am a devout Holmesian and love a well done pastiche. Even had one published in an anthology.

Will rely on PennyD’s recaps to keep me entertained. They will.

Won’t last the season. Had hopes for Lucy L. This is utter CRAP. And I love Sherlock. Had to slap myself 6 times to wake up. Cummberbatch warned Miller not to do this rot.

IMO, the best Sherlock of all time (including the adorable Benedict Cumberbatch) was Jeremy Brett, so I’ve learned to watch anything that claims to be “Sherlockian” with an appreciation for what the actor brings to the role but without expectations of being blown away.

Since I’ve had a soft spot for Jonny Lee Miller since “Eli Stone” (which was, alas, taken from the airwaves far too soon), I was predisposed to enjoy this, and I thought it was O.K. — not brilliant, but O.K. There was a lot housekeeping to get out of the way (how Sherlock came to be living in an apartment in N.Y.C., how Lucy Liu’s character came to be his Watson, etc., etc.) so I’m willing to give it more time to develop.

    So glad you’re recapping, PennyDreadful.

Ah the old who’s the Holmsiest argument.

For years I was in a group devoted to all things Holmes, and we were always fighting over who was the quintessential Holmes. As a big fan of old b/w movies, I cut my teeth on Basil Rathbone and just can’t give it up. And his Watson, played by the adorable Nigel Bruce was such a perfect foil.

    Purrrrrrrrrrr .

I think I’ll pass, and stick to PennyDelightful’s always fun ‘caps.

Rathbone and Cumberbatch and the one I conjure in my mind while reading. This one talks like a methhead on Halloweenwho can’t find a Butterfinger.

@pegalicious I agree Jeremy Brett will always be Holmes to me everyone else I just watch and enjoy them for what they are. I didn’t love this show but I didn’t think it was awful either.

i really enjoyed miller and lucy liu together, but i didn’t feel this had anything to do with sherlock holmes. miller’s interpretation was too manic, i though. i like this more as a procedural detective show than a new interpretation of sherlock holmes. and i love seeing aidan quinn in anything. he was a pleasant surprise.
