In my opinion, it’s only shocking if that affair was with a woman. I mean, c’mon, we’ve all seen and heard Lamar right? A gal would need a little something extra on the side to get through that year after year.
Avery saunters into the Bluebird and starts jawing with Gunnar. Gunnar lets slip that Scarlet choked during her session, a fact she hid from Avery. Man, Scarlet doesn’t really tell Avery anything, does she? Is it because she’s afraid he’s going to whale on her if she steps out of line or displeases him? Well, Avery goes pretty far in rehabilitating himself in my eyes tonight.
Yeeeeahhh, that means a lot to me.
The boys have an intense little moment as Gunnar tells Avery that Scarlet choked because she was afraid her success would drive Avery away. Avery looks away, embarrassed because he’s probably realized his ego is pretty fragile and he doesn’t like Scarlet achieving success A. Before him and B. Without him. Avery tells Gunnar he wouldn’t leave Scarlet for that and Gunnar acknowledges that to be true. The look in his eyes says it all.
You’ll never leave her. Definitely not when she’s successful and you can ride those prairie girl skirt-tails all the way to a meeting with Watty White.
The men size each other up and it’s a lovely moment because you can feel that each of them understands the other. Not completely and there is plenty of aggression and tension between them but there is understanding.
Lamar is on the phone with a mysterious caller. Hooker? Broker? Satan? We never find out as he makes some plans for a later date and then hangs up as Rayna walks in. Rayna gets right down to it. She tells Lamar she knows about mom’s affair, she knows now why he’s been such an ass about her career. Nevertheless, for whatever the reason, his lack of support hurts her deeply.
My only complaint about her look is that damn frosted pink lipstick! Try some plum gloss, girl. Everything else is just perfect but those lips belong in 1982.
Yes, I did indeed tell you with a straight face that I wished you didn’t put your own happiness ahead of your family’s.
Rayna’s face is a perfect WTF.
It’s like in her head she’s saying “Can you hear yourself actually saying those words out loud? You, the king of putting your own happiness over everybody else’s and expecting to be praised for it. She makes an excellent point as she tells Lamar if he treated DeadMom like he treats Rayna, it’s no wonder DeadMom had an affair. Zing! That one hit a nerve, I think.
