Deacon and Juliette decompress after dropping CrackMom off at rehab. I really like how Deacon acknowledges that CrackMom’s smack was abusive. Juliette admits that it happened “once in awhile.” Which probably means whenever CrackMom got high and Juliette was in the way. I really like how he didn’t try to make excuses for the behaviour, which Juliette has probably been doing for her whole life, he just simply says it was abuse. I really like these two together in this episode.
Deacon puts a comforting hand on Juliette’s arm and she leans in for a kiss. Deacon pulls back and Juliette says she just wanted to say thank you. And it breaks my heart all over again for Juliette, that she thinks physical affection is the only way to properly say thank you. She really did have to make her own way in the world. She’s gotta be hella smart to have made her way from some cracked out trailer to world-wide fame. Juliette, I love you!
Deacon tells her she needs to put all her problems with her mom, her music, her image, all that nonsense in her “rearview mirror”. Methinks I smell a song in a future episode.
Now Scarlett does something that makes me want to shout at the TV. She goes off on some big spiel about how she’s with Avery and yadayada. It would have made sense if Gunnar had made a move on her or said something like “I love you.” But he didn’t . In fact, he went out and got himself his own relationship that is working out just fine. So Scarlett’s big declaration of love for Avery just felt a bit weird and forced here. Like…maybe…she’s just trying to convince herself?
Yeeeah, even though you’ve been only nice and kind and friendly to me, I just want to kick your teeth in a little bit and remind you incessantly that Avery is the only man with access to my vagine. Is that clear yet? Yes? We’ll let me belabour the point just a little bit more so I can sound completely up my own ass.
What makes this scene delicious is that immediately after this little speech, Gunnar gets a text from Hailey! You, know, his girlfriend. Hee!
Teddy comes home, looking careworn, at 2:30am. Rayna’s tucked up in her home clothes, on the couch, writing a song. Teddy, loaded down with secrets of his own, is almost out the door when he asks Rayna about Deacon.
What really happened between the two of you? Why did you cancel the tour? Did you sleep with him?
When Rayna denies, he goes in the for the kill. “Did you want to?”
And he gets this face in response.:
