Hey, Lonny finally got to the newsroom. Of course, if he really were in New York, he’d be sitting in a holding cell so potato, potahto, he’s still hopping mad that Will ran off and left him behind with the cops, who are kindly escorting him. Why? Oh, so they can personally ask Will if he knows Lonny. After Will acts like a cock because fish gotta swim, he whispers to Lonny that bin Laden’s dead so Lonny can let the police know because they only engaged in minor acts of bigotry instead of full-on police brutality and it’s all very kumbaya. Then Will craps all over it by being so very proud of himself.
Charlie gets another call from a private number and I completely forgot about the idiot from the top of the episode. Charlie asks if it’s “Late for dinner” and that has to be the lamest callback ever. Even the maroon on the phone agrees. With his credibility established he informs Charlie that he’s NSA and doesn’t want to entirely alienate Murdoch, so AWM’s been engaging in governmental levels of illegal wiretapping. Why?
Mackenzie and Will go into the meeting room to plead with Charlie one last time to report bin Laden’s death. Charlie still thinks it’s not a good idea to scoop the President, but says to wait for the go-ahead from Jay Carney. Mackenzie thinks they’d be begging the news outlets not to go with the story if there was any danger…but for REAL. It’s a Presidential address. You’re not breaking anything you’re just stepping on the President’s toes. I’m not a journalist and I’ve never worked in a newsroom so, Jaycee, if I’m way off base let me know, but other than filler since the speech kept getting delayed, in moments like this, shouldn’t they be preparing the pieces for AFTER the address?
Whatever, turns out that Will got an email from Biden of all people (why, why, WHY?) dropping the deus ex machina golden egg and telling them OBL is reportable. Would the Vice President really do that when he was in the room at the time? Did he take a smoke break to text Will? Gah. Why does everyone have to be so stupid to make Will look smart? Oh, but to establish that Will’s “human” he got the text 20 minutes earlier but he was just “too high” and ignored it. Well, someone was high when this episode was made…but I don’t think it was Will, Sorkin.
Charlie is not amused but Will’s “high” again and he’s all “enjoy the moment” while the rest of the newsroom buzzes around, setting up for the broadcast. Tess actually wrote out for her overpriced, overbearing boss “Osama Bad” and “Obama Good” to remind him not to fuck up…even though Jane’s still there and still able to throw to the President then some extra in the control room puts on an FDNY baseball cap and I hurl but to quote Don “I’m not the bad guy in this,” because that is just a sick-inducing level of schmaltz.
