Once Upon A Time Recap: He Did The Mash (The Monster Mash)

Hook wants to go to their land, and claims not to give a rat’s ass how he gets there. His loyalty to Cora has to run deeper than this. I know villains are fickle with allegiances, but there is history here, i.e. how he got hooked up with her in the first place, and if he’s in her debt for something. Emma is sold as soon as Hook utters the magic words: He wants revenge on Rumpelstiltskin.

Back to Henry, all the horses have lost their shit (because animals are better judges of characters than most people) and opted to run away. Henry reaches out to help Daniel – dumbass – so Daniel has some flashback to Cora ripping his heart out (proving he’s still, like 1 percent human?). Charming and Regina arrive in the nick of time. Henry runs away while Charming locks Daniel in the stable. Charming says if Regina doesn’t put him down, he will. Methinks someone is relishing his new role as “hero” (aka POWERTRIPPIN’ BOSS) a little too much.

Regina insists Daniel will talk to her. It’s actually quite sad, especially thanks to Lana Parrilla’s awesomeness. In the flashback, the doc won’t let her watch the operation…probably because he’s not really doing it. Jefferson’s working a little too hard on selling her that if doctor can’t do this, no one can. Shockingly, the doctor fails at reviving Daniel and Regina is left heartbroken. Again.

Storybrooke Regina talks to Daniel 2.0, telling him she loves him. He becomes semi-normal for a sec, but is in extreme pain and begs her to let him go. Is he aware of what happened to him and how he was brought back? Or is he just getting an obsessive, stage-5 clinger vibe from her? He says something that sounds like “love again,” giving her what I think is permission to finally let go. She doesn’t keep him under the enchantment this time, opting instead to turn him to dust.

And they say romance is dead.

In lesser-subplot-land, Emma seems to be aware Hook has ulterior motives. He leads them to a giant beanstalk (LOST alum Jorge Garcia will be playing the giant next week), so maybe we’ll learn who Jack is soon? I’ve read some of your theories and think the Charming=Jack is a good bet.

In Fairy Land, Regina pulls the heart out of some gypsy skank Rumpy claims was her “replacement” and hi ho, hi ho its back to work they go! Watch the transformation, including change in makeup/wardrobe.

Hopeful

Crestfallen

Badass bitch

Now that she is almost completely evil (and I don’t think she’s ever become completely evil, there is still some good in her), may I just take a moment here to say I’ve LOVED the way this show has revealed Regina’s backstory. She wasn’t always an asshole, and you can kinda understand why she became one. Now don’t fuck this up like y’all did with the last 1-2 seasons of LOST.

bringing in characters from fiction set in the real world is weak imo. oh, and the little wooden people in rumpy’s shop were gepetto’s parents, not jiminy’s.

The crystal ball and the slippers are from Oz I bet! The ruby slippers can take him places. I just now realized that. I feel so smart.
At first I was mad that Dr. Whale turned out to be Frankenstein, because I thought that wasn’t a Fairytale and didn’t belong on the show. Then I realized what the writers were getting at: all these different worlds are connected, so they don’t have to be a fairytale to fit into the scheme of the show since Jefferson can world hop. So Oz would make sense just like Wonderland makes sense.

Frankenstein is Science Fiction so it isn’t set in the real world. It contains fantastical elements that don’t follow the logic of the real world. So it can be treated as separate world, like Wonderland, and Neverland, since it has it’s own logic and rules.

I like this episode. I never Frankenstein before but now I want to. I know what I’m doing during Thanksgiving Break now.

I love the looks Rumpy and Jefferson during the Science vs. Magic discussion. I really want to see more of their history together. And I want to see more of Jefferson’s back story.

I’m ready for my development with King George.

I can’t wait for next week. I loved that it looks like Emma stole her Bug.

Still on page 3, but had to say that I was pretty sure the crystal ball belongs to the Wicked Witch of the West. Rumpy wants the ruby slippers b/c they can take him to the world where there is no magic, like how Dorothy used them to get back to Kansas. It was implied the crystal ball came from Oz and Jefferson brought it since he couldn’t get the slippers. Anyway, back to reading now!

I would be so excited to bring Oz into this world! It’s a good possibility that’s who the ball belongs to, and next we’ll get Ruby Slippers.

One thing that has been nagging at me: I can’t remember if Ruby has her red cloak in Storybrooke or not. If she doesn’t, could she start shifting into the wolf soon?

As to our lovely storm, my town is so flooded we’re on the news for once, but my brilliant father picked a house on higher ground, so I’m still dry and for the moment have power. Hopefully it stays on. Hope others that were in the path of Sandy are okay!

Finnegan- thanks for the correction regarding the puppets!

Jessi- WAKE UP, PILLANIA! How could I not realize they were referring to Oz, especially since I was entertaining the thought that the Doctor could possibly be the wizard? So maybe we will get to see Oz at one point? It would be great to see Rumpy/Jeff exploring other lands in order to find what Rumpy needs.

Sagittariuskim- I am conflicted on this whole Frankenstein thing. At first, I did not like it at all. Frankenstein is very much set in the “real” world – 19th c. Europe. The plot is science fiction, but it still operates under the “rules” of the real world in a way fairy tales simply do not. It’s really the first sci-fi novel, so it’s much less fantastical than the crazy sci-fi worlds we’re accustomed to thanks to things like Star Wars/Star Trek.
Now, I’m kind of on board with it, if the writers are trying to take us in a “will magic or science (or both) save us/get us back home” route and KNOW in advance how they’ll pull it off.

Frankenstein is definitely worth reading. I grudgingly took a science fiction class in college to fill an English requirement and ended up finding both this particular book AND the entire course fascinating. Frank. basically created an entire genre, and its themes are still relevant (maybe even more so than when it was written) today.

@ sagittariuskim: When you do read Frankenstein, don’t expect the rip-snortin’ horror story that the movie was. It’s more philosophical in its exploration of the good/bad that science can do. Considering when it was written, it’s pretty amazing now to realize that it was considered horror fiction…and written on a dark and stormy weekend, no less.

@ ! Finegan– thats right!!!!! They are Gepettos folks

@ 6 Pillania— thanks for the recap hon!!!! Love the badass-edness of Regina too. I love “Frankenstein”–read it and did a few papers on it for college. My copy is sitting with my OUAT books–gotta keep them handy.

    ROFL– heeheeh a cardigan–heeheehee

@ 12 Ellen– she may be– she goes from subtle makeup to heavy makeup between epsiodes– that could be our clue.
AND HEY–speaking of clues b/c you all know I fixate on this stuff—Does Regina have a key pendant too?? Snow has one. And Emma has circles.

I love that all fiction is coming into play now—loveitloveitloveit. I hope it is Wizard of OZ being referenced—could the crystal ball be from Little Mermaid?? Did Ursula use it ?? Havent watched it in ages-and dont remember. I think OZ is more plausible–we are already out of fairytales and moving toward other fiction.

    I love this impish Jefferson–the pre-angry/angsty one.
Does anyone wonder if Cora killed Hook and is assuming his role like she did with Lancelot???

@hot cawfee I checked on the wiki site, and they claim that the crystal ball and reference to the slippers was from Oz. Not that those sites are always the most reliable, but it seems more likely since Rumpel was talking about presumed ruby slippers and such.

I really hope Cora didn’t kill Hook, because i love him too much. He’s pretty awesome (ly hot).

Okay, so I’m not done reading the recap (which is just as funny as PottyMouth’s — high praise coming from me, i’m sure!) But I thought i would share something that made me chuckle. How funny would it be if they had Matthew Fox play “Jack”. Hahahaha!
But seriously on the Jack-front, I think i would buy Charming as Jack only if his family had a herd of cows not sheep. (just sayin’!) :) I’m sure I’ll be commenting more later.
And whoever it was on here who made the call *weeks* ago that Whale was Frankenstein, I am completely and totally in awe of you right now! :)

@ Pillania, again brilliant review I honestly thought I was going to laugh myself off the chair at more than one of your picture captions! I have to admit I was thinking “Frankenstein? Really?!” But they did it in such a way that it makes moderate sense. But if Whale wasn’t he Wizard, who will be? And Dorothy? The Tin Man? I think “Charming” is the Scarecrow (pre-Wizard visit), cause sometimes he is *clueless*!

I think the reason Regina brought Whale to Storybrooke was to punish him. I mean, honestly, who didn’t she bring to Storybrooke to punish? Even our Sheriff McHottypants was there for punishment because he didn’t kill Snow.

My question is this: Why would Jimny *want* his parents back??? They were *HORRIBLE* to him! When you choose getting turned into a cricket over being with your family… me thinks that’s a sign you have a crappy family!

I LOVE how Regina is getting multidimensionalized! I didn’t think it was possible, but I actually felt sorry for her when she had to “kill” Daniel.

    @ 2hyper – HAHAHAHA!

But I’m more than ready to hear about King George and find out what he’s going to do about Charming.

@ ellemck1 — Well surely she would be a little more freaked out if she didn’t have someway to control her “wolf outbreaks”… I would hope! Maybe she’s wanting to meet up with Regina in a dark alley on the night of a full moon??? And it was the cloak that was the “spell binder” not the color. Hummmm. Either way I’m more and more impressed with Red this season! :)

Well that’s more than enough of my input for one day! :)

I love that Jefferson and Rumpy chilled together back in the day.
When Jefferson went “sooo…do you want the ball or not” and Rumple was like “mmmm….yeah” I started dying. Something about it was so cute and funny.
Also funny? The mental image of Rumple rocking his tight leather pants and the ruby slippers, while daintily clicking his heels together and murmuring there’s no place like home.

And I was thinking really hard about Bae, and have come to the conclusion that he has to be a Lost Boy. I resisted the theory for a long time because it didn’t make sense, but it’s kind of the only way for him to be alive. His father has been looking for him for so fucking long. If he wasn’t a Lost Boy or Peter Pan himself for the majority of the time, he would have died of old age by now.
    Where the fuck is Pinocchio?
And will somebody help him please?

Is it possible for Jefferson to be The Wizard?

Of course on the one week I don’t get to watched the episode on time and hope I can watch it by the time the thursday recap goes up, the lovely Pillania has to have it up super fast ;P. Fantastic recap for an interesting episode!

I really loved the idea of Frankenstein being in it, I’ve always loved the book. I was conflicted on how they were going to do it. If magic was a big part in Fairytale land why would he be using science? But I love what the writers did, insinuating that all these different worlds, Oz, Wonderland and now Viktor Frankenstein’s world (perhaps a world inhabited by horror characters?!) are all connected. It’s like all fiction is it’s own parallel to our world without magic.

I totally agree about the storylines, it’s seemed that with pulling three narratives, one always suffers. Regina’s storyline is increasingly more tragic and fascinating, the parallels between she and her mother this week we’re heartbreaking. Learning about Whale was a relief, now I can just fixated on mystery man. But with such small glimpses of Emma and SW it’s hard to get into the storyline.

I was happy to see Emma’s supposed infallible lying super power actually working today!

I loved Jefferson in this episode. This must be pre-kid because he was much softer and reluctant to help Regina in his first appearance. I was just wondering….Could Alice be Grace’s mom? Obviously not if she was a kid, but in the vein of she grew up and found her way back? What if Alice grown up assumed the role of the Red Queen?

ellemck1: There’s going to be a whole episode about Ruby and the first full moon in Storybrooke coming up ( I think in two weeks?) which should explain all of that for us!

So glad to hear the Storm didn’t affect you too badly!

Cawfee: Since Hook’s a series regular now, I wouldn’t think so…but these writers never cease to like proving me wrong.

ChaosButterfly: I’m still resisting Bae being a Lost Boy because he went to a world without magic, which insinuates it’s ours. Neverland has magic so he couldn’t have gone there. However the big leaning factor of possibility for a Lost Boy would be if the spell Bae used malfunctioned.

Bae’s age is a big subject of question. We know Rumpy had already been the Dark One for awhile before Bae left but we don’t know how many years between the Curse and when Bae left it was or if he aged normally where he went.

I have a feeling Mystery Man and Bae are going to be my newest frustrations…And just when I got rid of Whale…

@ 22 Chaos– I was thinking that too about Bae-a “Lost Boy”. There is no way we are going to have only one character from Peter Pan–we will get more. And Jefferson could be another character– Rumpy is so I see no reason why he cannot cross stories.

@ Wendy– I am with you on Bae’s age–he left at 13–age of Ogre War conscription. Emma had Henry at 18. Maybe Bae is only 13 years older than Emma, which isnt reeeaallllllly creepy so much.

I feel the same way about Bae going somewhere with no magic. For me, that’s the biggest barrier to the whole Bae is Peter Pan or a Lost Boy idea. But it’s still possible that he came to our world, was here alone and decided he didn’t like it, and then got scooped up by Peter Pan. That’s where all the lost boys came from…they were all abandoned boys in our world, so why not him. And then if Pinocchio was also a lost boy (he would also fit the definition of one), that would be the perfect opportunity for them to meet, but for Bae to still be young.

I agree Sagi– b/c Neal is connected with Emma (and thereby StoreyBrooke) he will be entering SB soon. My line of thinking is that you can only enter SB if you have left a place of magic–maybe Neal gained magic or has visited a place of magic so he can enter SB. Henry HAS to have 2 magical parents right??? Emma is OF magical parents and Neal GAINS magic. I think I am overthinking and that is the joy of The Show–I am so thinky.

And have to toss thoughts out about the “dream/nightmares”–its soooo Angela Carter and “The Bloody Chamber” I may lose my mind. I think Snow’s dreams are the same that Aurora and Henry are having. Only thing is it feels very “Bluebeard” which is sooo not Disneyesque unless they clean the hell out of it. It has some under-pinnings of Beauty and the Beast–which is one of the main fairytales of The Show.

I thought the Mystery Man tie-in was very cool, and there is still a possibility he could be a character of some sort.

I agree with those who say Snow was having the same dreams as Aurora and Henry.

A colleague shared this theory with me today- we know there are other realms. What if they are parallel universes in the sense that the same people inhabit each universe as a different character. For example, Whale is the Wizard of Oz in one realm, but Victor Frankenstein in another. Belle could be Dorothy in the Oz realm (my co-worker mentioned Belle was wearing a blue checkered dress recently). And so on, and so on. …. I think this would seriously overcomplicate things, but found it interesting enough to share with you all! Food for thought anyway.

@ 33 Ellen–right!! lol– I think I am totes the last one to get that Neal is the NY guy–he seemed a little shlubby but in an endearing way as younger Neal. I think he will get an episode apart from Emma.

Theres been a lot of references to The Wizard of Oz on this show lately. The slippers, the crystal ball and this week as well.

At first I thought the shadow in Aurora’s dream was Phillip manifesting himself there but apparently it’s Henry. I wonder if itll be a means of a psychic link between the groups?

I love that they’ve kept showing pinnochio with his poor impulse control, now we know how he got to Thailand.

I too, am disappointed about Neal not being Bae, because it puts a damper on my whole “August learned everything about Bae and Rumpy from Bae to trick him season 1″. But then a part of me thinks maybe August’s box has more information and that told him and that Neal could be Bae without his memories?

Not sure….I’ll save the more in depth commentary for the recap.
