Ruth has a necklace that’s been in her family for years. Her mom gave it to her and now she wants to give it to Snow. It’s said to be able to predict whether or not your children will be boys or girls. If it swings North to South, a boy; East to West, a girl. In fact, let’s try it now!
Snow tries to dissuade Ruth from doing it, but how can you really refuse a dying woman? So she holds the pendant over Snow’s hand and it is motionless. **sniffle sniffle** Snow tells her about the King’s curse, but Ruth is sure that if Lake Nostos can heal her it will be able to heal Snow’s womb as well. Yes, I’m sure it’ll totally work out for both of them, aren’t you?
After a brief check-in with the girl gang (they can see the ruins of Snow’s former castle), we head back in time and see that Charming and Co. have reached their destination.
Only the lake’s not quite what it used to be.
Over in Storybrooke Henry has found Regina’s vault. He continues proving his smarts by noticing scuff marks on the side of his grandfather’s coffin. A little push….and voila! Stairway to vaultdom. In the chamber below he sees the familiar wall of heart vaults (SOB! HUNTSMAN. SOB!), as well as some chests set into some archways in the wall. He takes one out, unlocks it, and
Almost bites it like his great grandpa!
Luckily Charming just happens to be there to slam the lid down and rescue him. But how did he know Henry was there? Regina called him when Henry stood her up and they figured it together. She sent Charming because she knows she’s on Henry’s shit list right now. They get the fuck outta there before something else decides to wake up and kill them.
Back at Lake Nostos, Charming has surmised that when he killed the siren the lake dried up. So now there’s no water left. DAMN! Wait, Lancelot was raised by a lady of the lake so he knows about these things and sometimes you can find some water if you know where to look.
Just enough for one little sip. Charming is thrilled because it’s sure to save his mom, but his mom wants Snow to have it. Snow is not going to let Ruth give her life for this. But Ruth tells her that’s what parents do; they put their children first. And someday she will understand because she WILL be a mother.
Shush your face, Ruth. You’re drinking it
So she does. She tells Snow to have faith; they will find another way.
In the present the gal gang has arrived at Snow’s castle. Specifically, at Emma’s blown up nursery. Mulan and Aurora give them a minute alone. Snow is sad because Emma never got a chance to use her nursery, never got to spend a single day in it. This is the life Snow wanted Emma to have, if the curse had never struck. They never got to do any of it. They never got to be a family. They DO have a family Emma tells her, they just have to find a way to get back to them. The wardrobe is still there, but now they’ll need to figure out how it works.
