Once Upon a Time Recap: Split Personalities

There is obviously something wrong with Henry because he is not even swayed by that cupcake (or the promise of teaching him how to make them himself).  Damn.  I don’t think I’d have that kind of will power.  He tells Regina he does NOT want to be like her.  EVER.

Henry’s outburst leads us back to FairyLand where a younger, gentler Regina also doesn’t want to be anything like her mother.  Cora notices the gift and is disappointed when she sees it’s a looking glass; she thinks perhaps the people don’t love Regina.  What a pity.

Cora tells Regina the King is not a strong man, he won’t be around forever.  She advises Regina to form her own personal guard and let everyone see where the new power lies, before she knows it the kingdom will be hers.  Regina wonders if that’s what Cora would do, why yes, yes it is.  Well, the thing is, she doesn’t want to be her.

Regina makes a move toward Cora but is stopped in her tracks by a wave of Cora’s hand.  Just what does she think she is doing?  She’s stuck with her FOREVER.  OH YEAH???????

Through the Looking Glass

Oh!  It looks like Mommie Dearest might be the Queen of Hearts after all!  I love it!

Finally Charming sets aside his personal quest for a minute and races off to the border to stop them from making a huge mistake. He tells them that if they cross that line they are going to be lost.  Everyone who loves them will lose them.  But there is something worse…..they will lose themselves.

He gets wanting to leave here, and he gets that it’s easier to let go of bad memories, but even bad memories are a part of them.  Charming says Storybrooke David was…isweak, confused, and he hurt the woman that Charming loves.  Charming wouldn’t give up being Charming to be David, but he also wouldn’t give up being David because David makes him want to be a better man.  Or something like that.

I am both.  WE are both.

Oh great, now everyone in town has multiple personality disorder!  I hope Sneezy’s got a new shipment of meds coming in soon.  Charming tells them that if they stay in town they can do whatever they want; live in the woods, in a shoe, hell, even write software and eat frozen burritos (huh???)  He promises that he will protect them.

Can I bone the nuns?

Charming’s speech seems to have done the trick though; everyone heads back to their cars without crossing the border.  Phew!  Disaster averted.

Back in FairyLand Regina is back in the saddle again trying to leave.  She gives Rumpy back his book and he wants to know how it felt to use magic.  Doesn’t matter, she’s never going to do it again.  Why?  Because it felt WAY too good.  That’s because she’s discovered who she is!!  He gives her back the book and makes the offer of private lessons again.  I hope Regina gives him some mouthwash first!

PottyMouth

When she isn't screaming curses at various dance show judges or washing her OWN mouth out with soap, PottyMouth is a proud mama to a gorgeous little boy. And yes, she knows everyone says that about their kids, but it's true when she says it. YES IT IS. Fuck you. She also laments throwing away the chance to be a trophy wife, and would like to find a rich husband so she can sit on her ass all day long and watch TV. If you are fabulously wealthy, look like Hugh Jackman (or ARE in fact Hugh Jackman), and are turned on by foul-mouthed, mature, slightly smooshy women, then she just may be the gal for you. Ahhhhh. good memories.

“If your love has to tie me, don’t try-y me, say goodbye-y”

I’m finding Charming much more tolerable minus Snow. And an ep without Emma is an ep worth re-watching.

“Regina has popped by Rumpy’s pawn shop” For some reason I read this as pooped by Rumpy’s pawn shop at first.

It’s a good thing Red is still there without SW, PC has a one tracked mind.

At least we know why they keep switching back and forth between names. I find the whole memory of two lives things interesting.

I think they don’t recognize Snow because she’s from a different part of the kingdom and they probable never met her. I wonder if she’ll recognize Cora when she wakes up. I’m pretty sure Cora know who she is.

I feel like the writers are hinting that Cora could be the Miller’s daughter, but at the same time that seems to obvious. And the writers rarely go the obvious route.

I love that Rumpy has his hands in everything. And think it will be interesting to see Regina trying to be good for a little while. I wonder how magic book is going to come back into the story.

I think they want it to be obvious, where Regina’s father is buried Mills is written on the wall and Cora didn’t come from wealth, Regina is definitely the baby that Rumpel was promised

I can help you @MSully28! In Rumpelstiltskin’s story the Miller tells the king that his daughter can spin hay into gold because he can’t afford to pay his taxes. The daughter is taken to the castle and she is requested to create a specific amount of gold from the bales of hay in the room. She cries because she is sure the king will find out that she can’t spin anything into gold and will surely kill her. That night a man appears promising to help her if she gives him her ring, she does and the next morning there are spools of gold where the hay was. The king is so delighted he asks her do it again. This time the hay is piled to the ceiling of the room. Once again the girl cries and one again the man appears. He asks for her necklace. She gives it to him and he works his magic and in the morning the hay is once again gold. The king is so ecstatic he decides to marry the Miller’s daughter. He asks her to do it one more time before they marry. This time the entire room is filled with hay and again she cries and again the man appears she has nothing else to offer him so he asks for her first born child, desperate not to be found out she agrees. The hay becomes gold again the daughter marries the king and within a year they welcome a baby. That night the man appears and despite the pleas of the now queen he goes to take the baby. He agrees to not take the child if she can guess his name. He’ll give her three chances and three days time to figure it out. The night before the day the man is to return a herald reports that he overheard the man singing and dancing around a fire full of glee saying the queen will never guess his name because it’s Rumpelstiltskin. Overjoyed when the man returns the next night the queen pretends to be sorrowful, using her first two guesses for the incorrect answer. The man is sure the child is his when on the last attempt the Miller’s daughter says “Rumpelstiltskin” this shocks him so much he disappears in fright leaving the family to live happily ever after!

I hope that helps, some of the details could be incorrect but that’s the gist of it.

Anyway, I have a million more questions since last week and most of my questions prior to even the finale have remained unanswered. What is Rumpel up to? Is the reason that part of FTL was destroyed because of Cora? I thought Cora was the queen of hearts but now I’m thinking the looking glass does not always land you in Wonderland, which would be typical of a Wonderland transporter…I bet Snow and Emma can use it to get back!!! Where did August go? I was hoping to see more of him! Plus why haven’t Grace and Jefferson been reunited yet? And there’s more…aside from trying to figure who Whale is…My newest theory is he has something to do with Ariel, like maybe he’s Flounder or something to do with king Triton…Only because I was trying figure out who would be allegiant to, since Charming isn’t his Prince, but would also be in Storybrooke…He’s definitely not anything Aladdin related…IDK…Episode five is his story…I’m sooo curious!!!

Regina was fantastic in this episode as always, her emotions are so real and so justifiable! I imagine Regina attempting to redeem herself is going to be really interesting, I imagine it’ll be like putting someone into rehab who isn’t really ready, she’ll screw the things she learned in favor of the joys of being so spectacularly evil and the relapses will continue…I doubt she’ll ever be able to fully recover but that’s a good thing, a soft Regina would be so boring!

John Travolta’s daughter is younger Snow, I love those flashback interactions, way back when Regina was all corruptible! Unlike Henry who is Emma’s son and the grandchild of true love, I’m loving the interactions between him and Charming. Also, Charming needs to wield a sword more, it’s hot!

I missed Snow and Emma but I understand not wanting to confuse us with the flashbacks. I’m also looking forward to more reunions. I think this post is long enough.

Ooo after thought: Maybe Whale is the wizard from the Wizard of Oz?! There is a green curtain next to The Looking Glass is that hall of worlds…IDK I’m completely vexed

If we don’t find out who whale is soon, I’M GOING TO EXPLODE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone else has something in their name and occupation that ties them to who they are but I can’t figure Whale out at all. Maybe it is something with little mermaid? Maybe he’s Prince Eric?

But Zomg for Cora not only being alive but possibly being our new big bad?! I wonder how Snow will react when she wakes up? Will she remember? Did she hit her head to hard? Will Cora manipulate Snow yet again?! How did Cora get there? Why is she in prison?

I think Jefferson and Grace haven’t been reunited because Jefferson crashed his car when the spell changed…

I want to know what Cinderella and everyone are doing! Especially if Grumpy and Nova are going to reunite, I loved that storyline last season.

I think Rumpy was going to leave town to go find Bae, but now that he can’t leave, he was heartbroken and I think August went to go find Bae. Or perhaps he needed to find Emma before he saw his dad? Still….Gepetto putting up “have you seen my son?” posters made me tear up big time.

This show never lets me get away with hating Regina long…..they always have to remind me that she’s not innately evil and neither is Rumpy. They’re just corrupted souls. I kind of hope both come to the side of good, or at least a chaotic neutral role. I think Henry is going to play a big part in reminding Regina that letting people love her for her isn’t a bad thing. That she wont always be hurt.

I’m rambling a lot…..I’ll stop now. I’m just so excited by this show and everyone’s AMAZING comments!

@WendyBird Rumpy already is a chaotic neutral. He’s not on any side but his own. He only helps people if it benefits him in some way, like giving Regina the curse. And helping Emma break the curse, was all so he could find Bae.

    awesome Potty—-great recap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A mini would rock the house– but am content with whatever is decided upon (heehee “upon”)

I have my notes in my totally geeked out “Once Upon a Time” note book that Mr Cawfee found somewhere and –it has the show logo on it–I am …well I just am.

wow– so much thrown at us and yes-lots of questions!!!!!!
There is a smashed hat and a half-full bottle of potion floating about Storybrooke.
OK– Can Emma and Snow do magic where they are??? Emma seems to have gained some powers–but mayhap that is where Cora is coming in–I totally lost my squash when she came from the shadows of the cell. YIKES–and I believe she is the Queen of Hearts too. Will Snow remember Cora and viceversa?? How did she get from one place to the other?

Where did Jefferson go? And Pinocchio/August? (yes my allergies went over time when I saw Marco put up the signs and when he held the red hat–hey kinda like right now as I type!!) And where is Sydney–back in the mirror or out of the mirror????

Rumpy flipping out was awesome!!!!!! I think he is afraid that both Belle (if thats where she is -out of Story Brooke) and Bae will have no memories of him. I think some one posited the theory that Bae is Henry’s father and I am coming to agree with it—it would make him a little creepily older than 18 year-old Emma but I will go with it.

I am bummed that we had so little of Snow and Emma– but we got some ass-kicking Snow—dropping Mulan and screaming “RUN” to Emma. Their way back is going to be awesome in its awesomeness. We may go to OZ, Neverland and if I am lucky b/c it would so rock in so many ways and on so many levels that things can rock–we go to the Snow Queen’s Palace.

And has anyone noticed the language now??? Alot of “hell” and “damn”– I noticed it this week. Doc Whale’s question about the nun’s “remembering” put me on the floor.

OK–done for now– will read all comments –squeeeeeeee

@Wendybird, I never even *thought* about Little Mermaid story line! But “whale” would fit — or maybe he’s Tritan? But then again if he’s a “good guy” why is he keeping that from Charming?

Wait… What was Charming’s real name in FTL? Wasn’t it David? Not before he pretended to be his brother James, but when he was a shepherd. I thought it was David… I have no idea! I guess i’m gonna hafta raid Netflix and watch that episode again to find out.

But i’m with ya’ll thinking that Cora had something to do with that area of FTL being protected, but i’m wondering if when Regina released the first curse that all the lands combined and that’s how Cora got to the FTL we all know and love. :)

But i’m thinking i’ll keep from “speculating” too much this season since i missed soooooo much when i was guessing last season! But it won’t keep me from guessing on *some* of the stuff. I’m just gonna keep my theories to a minimum this season — I hate being wrong. hahahaha!

SagKim: You’re right. I got it backwards!

Hot Cawfee: I bought a OUaT journal from disneyland for that express purpose too. It sits on my bedside table!!! I sit with it when I watch the show.

I would think Sydney is out of the mirror since no one else reverted to their fairyland selves? But maybe not, we’ll have to see when the Full Moon comes, will there be a werewolf in storybrooke since Ruby doesn’t have her cloak?

I wanted more Emma and Snow too! But the ending was AWESOME! I think this next week is going to be Snow/Emma heavy.

Lelah: I give all credit about the Little Mermaid theorizing to Iwantadventure. I was just running with it based off the names and occupations of people since it’s pretty much rang true for every other character. I’ve even made a chart of characters trying to find connections.

    ….I don’t have a problem…….*

I’m going to guess Whale may not be evil since he does help out and he was a doctor but maybe more so has a huge grudge against Charming for something which we’ll find out during his episode? He only seems to really butt heads with Charming and it doesn’t help that he slept with MM too!

*I totally do have a problem and I’m okay with it. I now understand all my friends’ obsessions with Lost all those years.

@SouthernEssence Oh IDK why I thought she was John Travolta’s daughter, I guess they look alike. I appreciate the clarification, thanks! :-)

@lelah we don’t know Charming’s real name…I think he’s Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk because they cast a giant and they made such a point of showing he lived on a farm with his mother.

@WendyBird Thanks, I have been trying to come up with something but I feel like I’m grasping at straws, all my friends watch the show and my sisters and I watch together and no one has any idea who Whale is, especially because he is a doctor. I can’t figure out if he’s a good guy because he did go after Regina and he is a doctor but he went after Regina because everyone was pissed off about the curse…I hope he’s not Prince Eric, he just doesn’t seem the type…Do we know his first name? I feel like we’re not going to get any clues until his episode but I want something…A tiny little thing to cling to…Which is why I’m sticking to my Little Mermaid theory for now…I feel like when we find out we’re all going be like “Oooo that makes sense! Why didn’t I think of that?!” That idea makes it all the more frustrating!!!

I want to be a writer for this show. It’s so amazing! Plus I’m slightly masochistic I can’t stand the torture of not knowing but at the same time I like it, it gives me something to think about until the next episode!

Plus I’m curious if Snow and Emma will trust Cora once they find out who she is.

Rumpel looked so pissed at the end of the episode, whatever he was planning was not a good idea not just because crossing the barrier would be bad but because it’s got to be really confusing for Belle right now, she doesn’t know what any of the modern consciences we enjoy are, it’ll be funny to see her try and use a phone

    Sorry one more thought!

@HotCawfee I totally agree but it would be so awesome, plus Rumpel brought Henry to Storybrooke so maybe he knows Bae is the father, plus Emma said he was a married man, maybe that’s not true but he could have been older. I kind of want an Emma flashback to when Henry was born.

@iwantadventure- thank you! I think I was thinking the miller had a storyline or something last season and I was forgetting who he was on the show…vs. who the miller is in folklore itself. But I am finding myself wishing I had re-watched season one before the premiere, I feel like I forgot SO much!

On that note… Can someone remind me if Charming’s adopted dad was killed last season? I would love to see him again, non-flashback style. Even if I will always think of him as Charles Widmore… :)

Sorry if I am showing my ignorance here, but I have really enjoyed reading all of your posts/theories!

I think Whale is some sort of royalty/close to royalty himself. Perhaps he was simply a visitor to Fairytale Land when the spell was cast, so he ended up in Storybrooke with the rest of them? So he harbors resentment toward Regina now. So that would kind of fit the Prince Eric theories. One thing I do remember from last season was Regina complaining about a mermaid, so maybe that was a little clue. If she ruined things between Ariel & Eric he’d definitely hate her. He could have been in Fairyland trying to reason with Regina about Ariel or something. That’s the best I’ve got, but I’ll keep reading all of your theories!

I thought that this episode was much better then last week. Maybe I expected to much. I personally don’t want Bael to be Henry’s father. I can see Maury now. “When it comes to 10 year old Henry.” “Baelfire you are NOT the father!!” Then we see Emma running off the stage crying!!! Oh OK, WHATEVER!!! Anyway, I guess we should have known that Rumpty Dumpty had to have something to do with Ragina being the way she is. I just wonder if we are ever going to find out what Charming’s name is. I bet it isn’t Rumpelstillskin though, but that would be my first guess. Just because!!! Was happy to see that Cora was OK. She should be good for a bunch of evil in the now a days. I hope so anyway. Since Ragina is going to try and be a good girl for a change. Good luck on that one doll!!!

^If he was Aquaman, I would laugh until I died.

I wonder if Whale’s desire to bang everything is a clue.
I like the idea that he’s Prince Eric. And it kind of fits because Prince Eric was a cheater…in the original story, I think Ariel died of heartbreak because Prince Eric had a side piece, even after declaring his love for Ariel.
Oooh. Maybe Whale was in Fairyland because Regina is the other chick he was banging.

And I think Regina’s curse affected Wonderland in a weird way. Alot of characters are missing still, but some are scattered here and there.
Jefferson is here, and they never showed us how he escaped. And if the guy from the last episode is the White Rabbit, then he’s here too. Cora (who I absolutely believe is the Queen of Hearts, especially since she stole Regina’s dad, seemed to be desperate to find a way back to Fairyland, hates Regina’s face, and was sent to an “annoying” land through a looking glass ) is back in Fairyland. Her being a prisoner in the refugee camp also makes sense in the context of her being the Queen of Hearts, because she was a mean and scary queen. Of course nobody will just let her roam free in the refugee camp. The people in this world tried the same thing with Regina until the wraith came along and messed up the jail.
But then did Cora lose her powers when she went through the looking glass? QoH didn’t have any powers. And if she has magical powers, how are they imprisoning her now?

The part of me that loves Rumple wants to cuddle him because he can’t leave to find Bae, and I know that makes him sad.
But the reasonable part of me wants to laugh, because he brought this on himself.
When he engineered the curse, he should have put it in the contract that he can leave the town when he wants without any ill effects. Ole sillybones.

In the original little mermaid she hides from some girls before he wakes up and he sees a different girls face and thinks she saved him. He tells the little mermaid that but because she cut her tongue out she Can’t tell him the truth. Just when he’s going to declare his love for her his parents introduce him to a process who happens to be the one he saw on the beach, he thinks he owes her his life so he marries her. The little mermaids sisters cut off their hair and give it to the sea witch in exchange for a dagger. She has to stab him in the heart and let his blood run on her feet to get her fin back but she loves him too much. So she goes to the deck of the wedding ship and leaves the dagger, her royal hair clip and a scale from her fin and throws herself into the water, dying an turning to seafoam. The prince sees her jump and sees the clip, remembering her carrying him back to shore and realizing his mistake. The story ends with it telling us not to be sad for the little mermaid for she gained a soul through her selfless act.

Can anyone remember why Regina’s father was in Wonderland? Am I right in thinking we weren’t told that? So if Cora is the Queen of Hearts (and I think she is) there is still a lot of backstory to catch up on.

Mike: Her deal with the sea witch was that she was giving up her life (and her tongue) for love. If he loved her, she would live as the newly born human version of herself, but if he chose to love another her life would end and she would become sea foam. Her sisters cut off their long hair and sold it to the sea witch to try to save her, but her love for the prince was so great she chose her death over his in the end.

Of course the Disney version cleaned it up, as Disney did with a lot of the lore they used.

@Mike She doesn’t drowns she dies of a broken heart. The witch tells her that if the prince marries some else. The day after she would die of a broken heart and turn to sea foam.

“But think again,” said the witch; “for when once your shape has become like a human being, you can no more be a mermaid. You will never return through the water to your sisters, or to your father’s palace again; and if you do not win the love of the prince, so that he is willing to forget his father and mother for your sake, and to love you with his whole soul, and allow the priest to join your hands that you may be man and wife, then you will never have an immortal soul. The first morning after he marries another your heart will break, and you will become foam on the crest of the waves.”

Iwantadventure: Nope, no first name for Whale. It’s always been Doctor Whale. Or else I’ve missed a piece of information! *sigh* Like everyone else says, it’ll probably be something so obscure or so obvious that we’ll all be like “HOW DID WE NOT THINK OF THIS?!” They just better tell us soon cause it’s driving me mad!

ChaosButterfly: I’m so with you on the cuddle/smack/laugh at Rumpy mixed feelings. On one side he did it to himself, on the other, he just looks sooooo sad!

I really want to know how Cora got to the refugee camp, why she’s in the prison and most importantly, Will Snow recognize her?!?!?!

…Can it be Sunday night yet?

    Sorry for the super posting!

Mike: The Disney version is not that one. The Disney version is cleaned up and has happy ending. But there is an animated version from the seventies I believe, that told pretty much the original story (no tongue cutting out)

I have it on VHS somewhere…If I can find it I’ll provide the information for it!

Oh man I had this whole long thing written and then left the page for a sec and it reloaded, I’m restyling it because it’s worth it lol!

So THIS was the discussion my friends and I had at dinner the other night. The music was really loud in the restaurant so we had to shout our theories at each other across the table but some interesting ideas came up and I’d thought I’d share. I am to blame for starting the conversation with one of my friends asking who he thought Dr. Whale was. This got everyone involved but his theory is Moanstro or Moby Dick. I got a laugh because Moby would make sense based on Dr.Whale’s personality but the show is Folklore and fairy tale centric and I feel like Moby Dick is more literature but the OUAT could do anything so I do enjoy this idea. Similarly another friend said that Whale could be Frankenstein. I actually really like this idea, the director of one of the Frankenstein movies was something Whale and he was a doctor. Plus, if Dr. Whale is Frankenstein his first order of business should be to bring Graham back, which would be perfect. However, this again feels more like literature than fairy tale. I’m still sticking to my Little Mermaid theory because the show has been extremely secretive about it and they’re extreme secretive about Dr. Whale. I have a hard time seeing him as Prince Eric (he’s such a dashing cartoon I just imagine they’d have to bring that to reality) but I could see them trying to throw us off with the less Prince-ly look(unlike Charming, Phillip and Cinderella’s Prince who’s name slips my mind) but they threw us off with Rumpel being the beast so this could be very much the same. Also it would explain what he was doing in Fairy Tale land because Regina said she had to go see someone about a Mermaid in the Beauty and the Beast episode. I always figured it was Ursula but maybe that fits because I think that Whale is Flosum or Jetsum, which would please me because then he’s sort of kind of a bad guy!!! OMG too many ideas whirling around my head…So glad it’s Sunday!!!

@Mike: I LOVE the idea that Dr. Whale was spurned by Regina so he has a grudge, that’s hilarious.

I suppose Cora could still The Queen of Hearts but the fact that she was in the same dress that she was in when Regina pushed her through makes me think not but then again she did kill Regina’s love(who’s name I also can’t think of right now), which makes me think maybe she is, IDK I’m in limbo about that, kind of really into seeing what happens when Snow wakes up.

I had to get this comment in before to tonight lol!

Oh and we will definitely find out Charming’s real name, I read it in this this interview http://www.tvguide.com/News/Once-Upon-Time-Spoilers-Season2-Horowitz-Kitsis-1053245.aspx which made me realize we didn’t know it which confirmed to me, at least, that he’s Jack but I’ve mentioned this already so we’ll just have to wait for that golden goose egg ;-P

@ I want– I love the idea that all stories are up for grabs!!!!!! I think Whale is either Monstro or Doc Jeckyll and Mr Hyde.–its a theory-but hey: A theory is a wish your heart makes!!!!

And OMG– yes– James Whale directed I think “Nosferatu” also. And no reason why Whale couldnt be Victor Frankenstein (I love that book–and wrote two papers on it)

@Hot Cawfee Plus, delving into Frankenstein ties right into the whole abandonment theme, but OUAT figures out how to make that work any story, I’m excited because I’m pretty sure we’ve exhausted all the possibilities and just have to wait for the big reveal…Okay I’m going to try and wait patiently for the new episodes recap, can’t wait to discuss!!
