Promises, promises.

Meanwhile at the base of the beanstalk, Mulan is preparing to julienne the heck outta the stalk which Snow takes great offense to.

Princess fight!

Poor Hook; he would’ve loved that fight.

As luck would have it, Emma makes it back before the cutting can begin.  Whoda thunk it?  Snow is not happy with her daughter, telling her that no matter what they go back together.  Get it?  Got it?

Good

They head off with a ten hour head start before the giant lets Hook loose.  Somehow I think he’s gonna be a little cranky by then. 

Sitting alone in her jail cell, a young Emma’s got mail.  The guard has to open it, and inside the envelope (from Phuket) is the swan keychain with the key to that hot VW bug.  You’d think she’d look happier to find out she’s getting the super cool car but Emma’s got other things on her mind.

And finally, we check in to Storybrooke only once tonight and that’s to find out that Henry is having a nightmare.  Charming uses his tried and true candle technique to chase away the bad dreams, and we find out that Henry is having the same exact dream as Aurora only his involves a chick on the other side of the burning room instead of a dude.  Veeeeeery interesting…..

And there you have it, Gasmi.  I have to admit, I was a tad disappointed at the identity of the mystery man; I was hoping he would be Bae.  I guess there’s still a slight chance that could happen, but I’m thinking it’s probably not the case.

    Oh, PottyMouth, you made one of my favorite typos of all time: Hook would be happy to satisfy his randy needs, but Emma shits him down. Good work! ;-D And that’s one way to definitely get someone to back off. (Please don’t fix it…it’s too much fun.)

    I was hoping Mystery Man would be Bae too. I’m still hoping that there is a small chance or at least that they’ll reveal Bae soon. But they’ll probable drag it out some more.

    I think the reason they didn’t get a younger actress to play teenage Emma is because it would make the Neal relationship creepy. It’s already kind of creepy knowing she’s suppose to 18 and he’s at least 10 years older. Could imagine having to watch all the make out scenes with a baby face actress playing Emma. And to be fair they’re are some 18 year old girls who look older than Jennifer Morrison. Look at Courtney Stodden.

    And I’m pretty Emma told Mulan to cut the beanstalk down so Snow wouldn’t come after, if something happened. We all know Snow would have come after Emma.

    I wonder if Hook will catch up with them. I hope he does I really want to see where his relationship with Emma is going.

    I agree Sagi—-I have had “issues” with Emma and what I deem age appropriateness for her. Bae would be too old for her to have a relationship with. Could not have used a younger actress to play Emma for this episode.

    Now questions–did Pinoc tell Rumpy about baby Henry??? Rumpy got Regina the baby so how did that come about????? And we know Pinoc took the money and ran.
    What the hell was in that box????????????????? Can Neal get into StoryBrooke???? With all the watches I guess he is the White Rabbit???

    The Dreams—I am tossing it out that Snow’s dreams are the same as Henry’s and Aurora’s. And we are going to find the chamber (the Bloody Chamber I am dubbing it as a nod to Angela Carter) with perhaps Cora and King George or maybe its Henry and Aurora who were looking at each other in the room.
    And b/c I must mention it–the significance of Snow’s key necklace–I think all jewelry is worth a mention b/c everything is a clue and I have an bit of OCD.

    OK babies– just googled Neal Cassady—and encourage y’all to do the same!!!!! He sounds like a good time and can totes be a fictional character for The Show!!!!!!! We need to get all funkadelic and Beat Generation–squeeeeee—-and yes he did steal car.

    I could NOT get over the Emma Swan is 17 thing. At the end, with her her all straight and down – she definitely looked younger. But the severe pony and the glasses? No way. THey should have given her bangs – anything but she looked so old! And Neal? A haircut and a shave, would have taken years off of him, too. Honestly, it made John Travolta playing a teenager in Grease look more believable. Yowza!

    And I love the idea of the White Rabbit. . . that would be so great! I really hope he’s magical, this whole thing with him being just a “guy” really bugs me. He HAS to have a connection.

    And when are we going to see August again? Is he wooden still? I NEED TO KNOW!

    Okay, let’s get down to business (to defeat the huns). ;)

    I couldn’t believe Emma as young either. Couldn’t they have at least used more radically different clothing or that awesome technology used to make Jessica Lange look young on American Horror Story?

    I still think Neal could be Bae, I really want him to be Bae with the Fairytale’s coming full circle but….I read an article recently that said this season we’d find out what happens when a human enters Storybrooke and I think it’s going to be Neal coming after Emma. I think the reason he has so many watches is that he feels guilt for what happened to Emma and obsesses over them.

    I want to know what’s in August’s box…I like the idea it’s Pandora’s box and now we know how he got to Thailand. I really like how they’ve kept Pinnochio’s classic poor impulse control and featured it so prominently. Speaking of August…Where is that wooden puppet man?! How can he be hiding out so long in a town they can’t leave!

    It appears everyone who had fallen under the sleeping curse has the same dream and depending how long you were under, depends on how severe (Henry can sleep most nights cause he was only under for what, a day? While Aurora was under for 28 years!) I did read in an article Snow finds a way to communicate with Charming so I’m going to guess that’s how! Through the creepy red room…

    Aurora is starting to grow on me, I know she hasn’t had a lot of material to go on but Sara Bolger is awesome and the bonding between Snow, who Aurora tried to kill only a few episodes back and Aurora, who discovered that she and Snow are very similar was really touching. Kind of like Mulan and Emma bonding over doing their duties, whatever it takes.

    So Emma and the gang have 10 hours on Hook. I wonder if he’ll catch up or go back to Cora with his tail between his legs. He’s growing on me too now that he’s more pirate-y and less all sappy love sick over Mila. I like my pirates crass and full of rum!

    I have a feeling they’re going to drag Bae out and tease us like they did last season with August.

    There has been a lot of Wizard of Oz references in the last two episodes, the writers have said we’d be seeing a new land this season….OZ?!?!? After all, the slippers and crystal ball last episode and the poppy sleeping powder this episode? I’d be so excited if it was Oz! The look on Emma’s face when a Scarecrow talks to her?!

    I watched online this week so I didn’t get the preview for this week. Is it Child of the Moon this week? Ruby’s episode?

    Oh, and with the three tendril storylines, one is going to suffer every week and it seems like it will be either Storybrooke of Fairytaleland. Only in the first episode did we not get the Flashback storyline. Which is kind of disappointing cause I miss other characters, but had to know this was coming with the expansion! I think they’re balancing it fairly well.

    Sagkim: Ughhh It’s too early in the morning to think about Courtney Stodden. She looks older than me, and I’ve got like 5 years on her.

    Emma and Hook do have a tense chemistry, I wonder if he really just wants to get to Storybrooke and has no affiliation to either party or if he has a special bond with Cora (and an even specialer one with Emma?)

    Cawfee: I don’t think August knew she was pregnant since she didn’t find out till she was in Jail and he had run off to Thailand, but if it wasn’t him, then who? Is there someone else pulling the strings? No one could leave so how did Rumpy bring Henry to Storybrooke? Cause if Rumpy could leave he’d have gone after Bae.

    Poopy… shit… holy crap… I sense a trend here that definitely had me laughing! No idea what was in the box (Gwyneth Paltrow?) but am, like others, dying to find out. I am still trying to figure out how Hook was a bigger villain than Rumpy – he seems a little milquetoast to me. I enjoyed this episode more than the previous one, which I found a little boring. Can’t wait to see the Ruby-centric episode next week!

    @Wendy– I think Hook is still hung-up on Mila and wanting to avenge Mila and his hand. That will be some awesome awesomeness when Hook and Rumpy go to war. I think Hook will make a real move on Belle to retaliate.

    How about Neal as the Caterpiller from Alice in Wonderland or—and leap with me guys–what about Randall P. McMurphy from “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”?? We had the story reference last season with the Chief and Nurse Ratched in the hospital basement.

    God–this is the best show EVER—-I dont think I mentioned that today !!!!!

    I thought Neal was going to be the White Rabbit too, at first — with all the watches and his being LATE for his important date with the fence, and the “Cleaner and Hatter” sign in his apartment (and pocketwatch on the door) — but, wasn’t there already a different White Rabbit? Leroy and Astrid tried to sell candles to a guy with a pocket watch who was eating a carrot. It seems very Wonderland-y though — maybe the March Hare? Did he have a watch?

    I also keep thinking the Lou Reed song on his iPod was a clue, but I can’t connect it to anything …

    OK– and one last thought before I have to go—
    RE: Emma and her age– I think we are going to see a younger Emma-in foster care. Therefore we need a younger and more age appropriate actress. Someone mentioned the story-line for Emma of Alice in Wonderland–maybe we will get a young Emma.

    PottyMouth- it was a pleasure to fill in for you. Your recaps & commenters are awesome!

    I definitely think Snow had that same creepy dream. Also, all I could think of when I heard the dream descriptions were the rooms from the Edgar Allan Poe story “Masque of the Red Death” – the curtains especially really reminded me of it and I guess any story or work of fiction is fair game at this point.

    Dying to know what’s in the box. Could Neal also be a transplant from another world do seeing the curse in the box meant something to him? Did I impress you with my Poe reference? Cause the whole box thing reminded me of the classic SNL short “D*ck in a Box” ;)

    Hi friends! I’ve been out of power since hurricane Sandy hit. Our power company has been unreliable and it’s been very difficult with no heat or electricity. I won’t bore you all with the details but I just wanted to pop in since I currently am at a friend’s with Internet access and let you all know that I’m safe and okay. I did get to see Dr. Whale’s episode before Frankenstorm took out our power. I just caught up on this episode, which I missed. I’ll have to catch up on all the comments from both posts. I probably won’t be able to join in this conversation but hopefully the next episode! Staying positive. I have lots of comments/questions but I’ll post them when I am better able to maintain cell battery for extended periods of time. You’ll just have to bear with me whenever I do catch up! Okay, carry on with your wonderful theorizing!

    The song is “Charley’s Girl.” And was it here I read the connection between Emma being a bail (Bael) bondsman and telling Henry his father was a FIREman? Very tricky.

    @Cawfee The married man thing came up when Snow was having her affair with Charming. Emma told her she had dated a married man before. Emma told Snow that Henry’s father being a fireman and death was a lie. And tells her that Henry’s father was no hero.

    Pikey: I really like what someone said about his box being Pandora’s box (loosely). but that could be tricky being how Pandora’s box is actually suppose to work… I’m with you on Hook though, there’s not enough bad in there for me. The pining for Mila thing is a real drag.

    Cawfee: Ugh, the hung up on Mila thing is what keeps Hook from really being Hook for me. I’d love to see him on the same level of Bad-ness as Pre-Belle Dark One Rumpy. Hell even post-Belle Rumpy has more bite then the good old captain! Of course, I’m more critical over Peter Pan…it’s one of my most beloved tales.

    There is a jump rope rhyme that involves Tallahassee. I can’t remember it though. I have the Cinderella rhyme stuck in my head now though. Damn the childhood!

    Cinderella dressed in yellow came down stairs and kissed a fellow, made a mistake and kissed a snake. How many doctors did it take?

    Cheryl: The March Hare didn’t have a watch but he did break the White Rabbits watch with Jam and Butter but not mustard. That would be silly!

    SagKim: Tell me about it! I’m 23 and I have the worst time with my i.d. Most people think I’m around 15 and that’s with me wearing make up :/

    Pillania: You impress me with both you Poe knowledge AND your reference to a SNL classic ;)

    I kinda thought the red room reminded me of the Wizard in Wizard of oz. Wasn’t there curtains that he hid behind and watched them………….???

    That is about all I got. Also the actor that plays Neal was totally the bad guy in season 1 of True Blood haha

    Yeah, I’m waiting for Neal to start talking with a Cajun accent. I loved Rene. But I have a habit of loving the bad guys, so nothing new there.

    I really want to know what was in the box, and if Neal has a counterpart in DF. And I really would like to meet Bae, just so I don’t have to keep shouting HE’S BAE! to every new guy on the show. I got excited when I found out we were getting some new guy named Quinn this week, but he’s in the DF story, so most likely not Bae. I wonder if they’re going to make us wait for Bae until the end of the season. I also can’t wait to see more of Neverland and hopefully meet Peter Pan. Such a great story.

    Loved Jorge Garcia as the Giant! He was always one of my favorites on LOST, and this role was so different from Hurley.

    I think (and this has probably been covered, but I’ve been studying so much, I don’t remember) that the person staring at Aurora during her dream was Henry and her at him in his dream. Not sure what the dreams are significance-wise, but it should be interesting. And I loved how Charming calmed both Snow and Henry down the same way when he woke them from their dreams. There are very few sleep problems so bad as terrible nightmares.

    There’s probably a lot more I could say, but I need to get back to studying so I can watch the new episode tomorrow!!! Can’t wait to see what happens with Ruby! Hope everyone who has been affected by the storms are okay soon.

    Hi everyone! Still no power but service is working better in my house so I caught up on all the comments from the last two recaps. I have A LOT to say about both episodes but I’ll mention that stuff later.

    First, I’m good! Thanks everyone I missed you all too! I feel very lucky, given what Sandy did to some people’s home.

    @Cawfee: I did a bit of drinking, it kept me sane!
    @Wendy: You have no idea how I’ve missed commenting! When the lights went off on the Monday Sandy hit was hoping the lights would be back in a few days so I could discuss Whale’s episode with you all. Almost 14 days later and still no electricity but Internet on my phone is working so much better I have to comment!

    Let’s see where to start…Hmmm…I know!

    You all keep mentioning the Wizard of Oz references (When Regina wanted magic from Rumpel and she said she didn’t care if it turned her green, I had this vision of some unknown node as Glinda and Regina singing “For Good” from Wicked…It made me giggle). What’s important is the episode Regina and Jefferson go to Wonderland, when they are in that hall of worlds there is a green curtain to the left of the looking glass. That’s got to be Oz!

    Now let me get my Whale comments out of the way because you’re all so beyond that conversation but I want to share my thoughts!

    First, only in NY can you have waters warm enough for a hurricane and a week later get a Nor’Easter that dumps a few inches of snow on you! Anyway, with the gas shortage and the weather we couldn’t go out. And with no electricity there’s not much cooking options. So we decided to try these MRE things. Don’t get me warm, we were well prepared for this hurricane and there was food in the house and we have a gas stove but it was cold so we didn’t really feel like walking around the house. I think we were also curious. Anyway, it’s basically dehydrated food. MRE stands for Meals Ready to Eat and the army uses it. So I tried one(it’s not gourmet but it tastes better than Spaghetti O’s, which I won’t eat!). Then both of my sisters made themselves one each. So you put water in this heating bag thing and then the food gets hot. My youngest sister says, “How do they do it?!” I said, “MAGIC!” And she turned to me and said brightly, “NO! SCIENCE!” And much laughing ensued. I thought you all might appreciate it.

    Now back to Whale’s episode,

    When Charming punched Whale that’s an excellent way to start all casual conversations! I particularly loved when Whale thought Charming meant Catherine. Did he or didn’t he?! The man is such a wannabe playboy! Typical Doctor, he thought he was hot shit when he was pre-med and never grew out of it.

    Also, I KNEW Whale came from a different land!

    The whole Regina/Daniel thing was actually upsetting. That wasn’t even closure, for me!

    Okay Jefferson wearing his hat is really cute and funny at the same time he rarely actually wears it but really should more often.

    So prior to last week’s episode it made sense that there were three beans! Bae used one to jump down the rabbit hole and get to our world…Hook used his to get to Neverland and Jack made the beanstalk! So might as well also reveal Charming’s identity lol!

    It was sooo good!!! I felt so bad for Regina, she did a good job talking Charming down but I was actually scared for her!

    They kept Whale’s brother secret! That’s going to bother me! Whale said he was only partially successful, who could his brother be? We don’t know enough about the world that Whale comes from though.

    After tonight I’m definitely convinced Cora isn’t the Queen of Hearts. I forget who but in the recap for Whale’s episode someone posed the idea of Alive being the Queen of Hearts, I love this idea!!!

    It was fun to have Hook and Jefferson in the same episode! And Jefferson and Rumpel working together, very sneaky…Jefferson and Regina meeting for the first time! Also intriguing! Regina is Rumpel’s apprentice was even more interesting! I want more of all of that!

    I wonder who’s heart they used…I wonder if that’s important!

    I liked how they made it obvious that Cora had taken the hearts, especially since it’s not nearly usually that dramatic.

    Emma’s lie detector didn’t work a few weeks ago when Cora was impersonating Lancelot, I think magic prevents her from detecting it, that was some hardcore magic and deceit being used! Of course I could just be pretending the writers didn’t make a mistake. Emma is getting answers and taking names! It actually worked to the group’s benefit because Cora thought she could leave Hook to infiltrate them but Emma got right down to the whole point of his being trustworthy or not.

    Cora needs the compass but I wonder what else she has up her sleeve, Hook is easily falling into the Emma love interest so I can’t see them killing him before he gets to Storybrooke!

    Igor was in it!!! Or is it Eye-Gor?! lol!

    I loved Rumpel trying to point out that magic is better than science! I happen to agree. But it’s an interesting thought. Science can fail but magic comes with consequences. I’m not sure which is better since both can have horrible results.

    At least now we know why he had the green sleeve on.

    I’m a little sad we don’t have to throw tantrums wondering who Whale is anymore, I’ll miss the theories but onto the next big mystery!

    Regina in therapy…”I used magic!” She sounded really upset. She’s really trying!

    Phew! Okay those are my thoughts on that! Now onto this episode.

    There are a lot of True Blood actor crossovers on OUAT. Maleficent is played by Kristen Bauer van Straten who is Pam on the show…I may have mentioned this. I was excited to see who Rene would be. Of course I get no Bill shouting “Sookeh” like in the first season but that’s okay because Neal is a totally different character.

    As expected the whole Emma being so young didn’t work for me. I did like that her dye job didn’t look as good as present day but the glasses and the outfit just didn’t work. She looked too old.

    I also get mistaken for about 15, I used to hate it but now I have a bunch of funny stories. Emma didn’t have to look that young but she didn’t look 18.

    I still believe Neal is Bea. He bought whatever was in August’s box(This will also bother me, the typewriter he showed Emma really threw me)…The age difference, the lifestyle. They were made for each other. August didn’t know Rumpel was looking for Bae and Neal had no reason to divulge that information to him. Neal looked like he made something of himself in the city so was able to come back and get a job.

    Wherefore art thou Pinnocchio?! He sent the promised postcard but he disappeared. Dix he leave?! He can…Where would he go? Is he wooden? I miss him! I want a Gapetto/Pinnocchio reunion!!!

    Emma left Hook because I think the similarities to Neal put her off of him too much. It hurt to be reminded and it’s so sad because if only she knew Neal didn’t want to set her up! Hook is so hellbent on revenge it was not a good time to make an enemy of him…I think we might see a new side of him since Emma did what she did.

    So this Jack business…I’m not sure how I feel. I was so sure Charming was Jack and I’m having a hard time letting that go. Snow nodded, knowingly in my opinion, about Jack’s great defeat of the giants! I really think Charming and the giant made a deal (Emma did it!) and he fled the glory of being Jack, which would go along with his character being against replacing James his twin. They just made such a big deal of him being a Shepard, I was so solid in knowing this. I’m sticking to it until there’s other proof…A skeleton doesn’t do it for me. (I may or may not be willing to consider the idea that Jack is Charming’s father)

    This dream though, I think that’s Sandman territory but the Sandman story is not a happy one. Charming looked like he recognized the dream and Snow is such a mom but she also looked upset. This does sound like a way to communicate since Henry and Aurora can see each other across worlds. Snow’s face when she lied about the dreams getting easier actually made me giggle. She is such a touch cookie. Aurora just seems sad sad, I actually think she showed some substance potential.

    I feel like I’m missing something but if I honestly can’t think of anything else to bring up.

    I’m excited for Ruby’s episode, hopefully I get to see it sooner than this past one.

    Just to clarify I brought up the Sookie reference because Rene was attacking Sookie and Bill braved the daylight to save her, getting charred in the process…Ugh Bill…

    Also I typed node instead of blonde and Alive instead of Alice…Those typos just bothered me.

    But I do believe I covered everything!

    @ 28 Ellen– happy studying!! I think that Aurora and Henry were in the same room at the same time also

    @ I Want— glad you are safe hon–I am going to google Sandman– sounds interesting. I think we can all agree that the library is open and all fiction is fair game.

    I think Neal is going to be a few characters–or at least cross a few stories. Is he Bae??? I dont think so but am happy to see the beat Generation ref of h is name—-With “On the Road”, his story line is going to take him alot of places (Oh the Places You Will Go!!!) and allow him to be other characters. I am hoping for Rip Van Winkle b/c we have “dreams” as a little plot point (I think thats the word I want).

    Am excited for Ruby tonight– and King George taking a place in new StoryBrooke tonight. I think Granny is going to kick his ass!!!!!!

    @Cawfee: There’s a horrible story where the Sandman pokes out the eyes of children while they sleep! There’s the nicer version where he sprinkles sand and that helps people drift to sleep and dream…I can’t remember the actual story just that one upset me…It’s probably worth a Google refresher! Actually any story with dreams is worth revisiting

    If Neal is Bae, him being multiple characters would work given that Rumpel, his father, crosses over so many tales…Names are never a coincidence in OUAT…Is there a particularly famous literary traveller? (Don’t say Gulliver! That’s too easy and equal to the possibility that Whale was an actual whale)

    @ellemck1 I know how you feel. I have so much to do this week. I just want to curl up in a ball and cry. Which is terrible, because I should be excited about this week, since I’m going to the Breaking Dawn 2 midnight showing. It’s times like this that I start thinking that gold diggers have the right idea.

    @sagittariuskim hope things calm down for you this week so you can enjoy it! The gold diggers might be right, and I’ll probably shout that even more once I (hopefully) start nursing school.

    But luckily, I studied enough to earn me some time off for Once Upon a Time. Granny and her crossbow are epic. No other way to describe it. And I’m glad I got my question answered, especially since I’m also wondering if Cinderella/Ashley and Shawn/Thomas have somehow been separated since the curse was broken… Oh the ways I procrastinate. Theorizing is my favorite. And pinterest, haha.

    And thanks hot cawfee! Appreciate the happy studying. Glad service is better for you iwantadventure, hope the power comes back very, very soon! Hope Neal crosses stories, that would be cool.

    The episode was fantastic!!! I have lots of thoughts!!!

    @Elle: We got power back at 2:11pm…I was sooo happy! The power guys were on my street from about 10:30 in the morning…I’m not going to lie I was thrilled I would be able to watch tonight!!!

    The preview for the next episode in two weeks(boooo!) looks awesome!

    @ellemck1 My roommate’s a nursing major and she lives in the library. I’m an art history major, while it’s stressful in it own ways, I’m so glad it’s no where near as stressful as nursing.

    @iwantadventure So happy you got your power back. I’m from the Gulfcoast so I know how much hurricanes and being without power for days. There’s nothing like the power suddenly coming back on after days without it. Just be happy you didn’t lose power during the summer in the humid South.

    @Sagi: Two weeks is a looonnnggg time. I hugged the electric guy…My whole block turreted the crew like celebrities, taking pictures, cheering! And to be able to fully charge my phone, uh such joy!!! Having no power in the heat sounds terrible! New York isn’t equipped to handle hurricanes, I much prefer snow!

    @ 32 I want— Neal Cassady is a real person that figured prominently in the genre of Beat lit—Jack Kerouac (that hip-flask swigging mad-man) based his protaganist in On The Road on Cassady.
    I am hoping the writers will keep true to the wanderer motif with Neal–as Henry’s dad he needs to hit a few stories.
    The Show gets better and better–I cannot believe we viewers are denied a week of our show b/c of some awards show–sheesh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
