Once Upon a Time: Where the Heart Is

When we last left StoryBrooke, Cora and Regina had managed to wrangled Rumpy’s dagger away from Snow by threatening her former maid and then killing the lady anyway.  Also, Rumpy is suffering from a severe case of mustard poisoning, Bae is engaged, and Henry is still pissed at Emma for lying to him about his dad.

You can’t handle the truth!

Turns out he can, I guess.  You’d think he’d give Emma a bit of a break, but I guess being lied to your entire life tends to make you have a lower tolerance level for lying liars.  Thankfully we won’t be spending a lot of time on that in this episode because there is SO MUCH MORE to cover.  So let’s get to it!

We begin in FairyLand, long ago when Cora was young and naggy with a drunken buffoon of a dad.  Since he’s sloshed again, it falls to her to make sure the grain delivery gets to the castle on time.  Once there a little bitch of a princess trips her for sport and Cora is PISSED and not afraid to show it.

As you might imagine, that doesn’t go over well with the royals and the King makes her apologize to the princess, threatening her livelihood telling her there are other mills out there and if she doesn’t apologize they won’t take any more flour from her.

Though I may give you a little bit of something to remember me by

Oh, and in case you were wondering, the bitchy little princess is a teenaged Eva, Snow’s mom and future saintly queen.  Just proves that teenagers are HORRIBLE and should be locked away from society until they outgrow said awfulness.

Please lock yourself in a tower until you learn how to behave

In StoryBrooke, Bae and Henry have continued to bond with Bae letting Henry take the Helm of the Jolly Roger for at least part of the journey.

Dad lets me drive slow on the driveway

Below deck, Rumpy is in bad shape, but Emma doesn’t want to talk about his approaching demise; she wants to know if the dagger really can make him do ANYTHING.  Yup.  Like kill them all?  Well, yeah, that would be included n anything, wouldn’t it?

Rumpy says he’s sure Emma is now hoping he’ll bleed to death before Cora and Regina get a chance to use it, but he’s Henry’s grandfather, so no, she’s not wishing that at all.

With all that spinning straw into gold stuff I’m guessing you can buy him some nice birthday presents

Yeah Emma, maybe that’ll help distract Henry from how mad he is at you.  At this point anything is worth a try.

PottyMouth

When she isn't screaming curses at various dance show judges or washing her OWN mouth out with soap, PottyMouth is a proud mama to a gorgeous little boy. And yes, she knows everyone says that about their kids, but it's true when she says it. YES IT IS. Fuck you. She also laments throwing away the chance to be a trophy wife, and would like to find a rich husband so she can sit on her ass all day long and watch TV. If you are fabulously wealthy, look like Hugh Jackman (or ARE in fact Hugh Jackman), and are turned on by foul-mouthed, mature, slightly smooshy women, then she just may be the gal for you. This episode definitely made up for the lackluster episodes of the season.

I like seeing Rumpy teaching Emma and Cora. And seeing him instruct Cora to draw on her anger and Emma her love.

I wasn’t surprised Snow lit the candle, I was surprised by the Regina thing. I can’t wait to see how Regina’s going to get her revenge.

I want to see Belle’s reaction to Rumple being alive. I wonder if she’ll be happy or think it was a trick. I also want to see Nealfire’s face when he see’s Belle. Since Emma also left out the age difference.

It takes a hell of a lot for a show to make my allergies act up, and this episode went above and beyond those requirements. When Cora died and I starting bawling my eyes out, I thought hell must have truly frozen over…twice.

It also accurately illustrated the point that both good and evil characters are MADE, not BORN (IMO). Look at Eva and Snow when they were kids…bratty and obnoxious, but grew the hell up and out of those phases, into respectable characters for people to root for.

And look at Rumpy…cowardly, just like his father, but opportunity and a desire for respect transformed him into the sparkly-skinned trickster people know and love (or fear, IMO again).

And also, for Emma to get all pissy over the fact that Neal’s engaged just tickled me. Provided he can find his way back to Storybrooke (and chances are, he will, given that he’s a frigging pirate), Hook will always be there to give her a good, healthy dose of angry, passionate sex.

I do, howevs, wanna see the look on his face when he finds out his plan for revenge went to hell in a hamster bowl, though…

P.S.: Am I the only one who found Rumpy and Cora’s tryst both terrifying and arousing at the same time?

This was the best episode of this show I have seen in forever! I was irritated at Snow last epi for not being tough enough. Thank God she got some balls this epi. I know that in fairy tales there is good and evil, but that can get old. I like shades of gray characters. Sometimes you have to make the tough decisions and do something not perfectly okay for the good of all. As long as you keep a clear eye on the real thing you are doing, I say go for it!

Also that is really going to add some excitement to this show. The white and black of it was getting boring. I hearted this epi so hard! Also I am a Rose McGowan fan so I was happy to see her in her role and she did a great job. She looked and sounded so much like older Cora it was uncanny.

LOL my captcha is “Exclaimation!” I do a lot of those!

Loved, loved, loved this episode! I cried 3 times during the show (allergies be damned!) and choked up reading the great recap. I hope to see more of Barbara Hershey’s amazing acting in back stories. My heart broke at seeing the hope and love in Regina’s face when her mother looked at her with such love. Every member of the cast was stellar! My only regret was that they didn’t take advantage of restoring the dagger to correct the spelling of Rumpel’s name (I am obsessed with this and I fully admit it…)

I agree with Pikey that the acting was really awesome with the looks on Regina’s and Cora’s faces was so touching.

Regina is such an awesome character. I love villains that you can sympathize and feel for, you know what I mean? She is really a victim in a lot of things too just like everyone else.

I was glad they finally did the ACTUAL Rumple fairy tale of the Miller’s daughter and spinning the straw into gold and all that. I was wondering if they would ever actually even do it which they should considering the main character of the show is Rumple from that fairy tale!

Thank you casting gods for Rose McGowan and Joaquim de Almeida. They rejuvenated the show, and it seems the writers finally woke up and gave us an exciting story, too! Best episode of the season for me. Thank GOODNESS. And yes, I completely teared up during the Rumple-Bae and Cora-Regina scenes. Rose McGowan was eerily and wonderfully like Barbara Hershey, but she still exudes sex like she always does (love her). I doubt it will happen, b/c once we watch people on this show die, they tend not to appear in flashbacks, Papa Henry notwithstanding, but I would love to see more Rose and Joaquim. Alas, they are probably doomed to ride in the Night Lands with the Huntsman. I miss you, Huntsman. Wonderful recap!

Oh Potty, Your recap was perfect, this episode was perfect! And for this week’s episode, like I said in the last recap’s comments, no need for any actual explanation, just make the entire recap screen caps of Graham!

So I truly agree with everything everyone has already said. Though in being honest I didn’t cry when Cora died. IDK if it was because I was expecting it because there was so much hype that “one of their own will die” or because I was still getting over the other emotional bites. IDK…I think that they showed Cora as she really was even in the past. They didn’t make her out to be someone like Queen Eva, who like Snow wasn’t always so saintly. And I think I’d just had it with Cora’s lack of humanity. Granted, it makes sense, her lack of heart would cause that problem but still. I do like that Cora didn’t see Regina eye to eye in regards to Henry until it was too late because she didn’t see her own daughter that way. And I really liked how the writers tied in a lot if lines we’ve heard from Cora and Rumple, like the “I’m so much more”, which she said to Regina before she killed Daniel and how Rumple told Regina that her mother wasn’t strong enough to take someone’s heart and kill them. The twist on the story was great, I like that Cora lied all on her own instead of like in the fairy tale where he father boasts of her abilities. The show likes to create and encourage powerful women, I like that.

On to Snow. I understand her having a panic attack, but it looks like that feeling bleeds into the next episode and I feel like we’re going to regress. Regina is back to being the Evil Queen of season one, whiling her way doing her most favorite pastime (no, not Graham, so second most favorite pastime), blaming Snow for everything and Snow is walking around or in this case, again hiding, and feeling guilty about something she didn’t do or know she was the cause of. This is different because Snow did do this and she’s fully aware of the choice she made, she should own it. That’s not to say that she should go and become dark and cynical but she should prove to be a worthy opponent of Regina. Make Regina face the truth, it wasn’t always Snow’s fault, if Cofa had had her heart she would had let Regina run off with Daniel because she could understand that kind of love and everything would be wonderful (the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, hehe ;-P), then again Regina might have been Rumple’s daughter and then running off with a stable boy may not have been so surprising. Well Rumple got Regina as his apprentice anyway so he got his own revenge on Cora for feeling like she broke their deal. Anyway, Regina needs to stop and take stock of everything and maybe actually prove to Henry that has changed, now that she can’t be manipulated. Henry knows she didn’t kill Jiminy so there’s potential. I’d like to see Regina take the opportunity instead of looking to cause Snow’s demise.

I think Rumple’s phone call to Belle proved the difference between Cora/Rumple(which was unholy and made my skin crawl!). Belle changes people not because they need to be changed but because she their greatest potential and raises them to that platform. In the end Belle didn’t want to broke the curse because she was doing Regina’s bidding, because she thought she could, she wanted to break it so that Rumple could love her with his whole self, without the Dark One or magic as a crutch. Cora didn’t want to change Rumple, her attraction wasn’t to him, it was to his power. There love was tainted by Cora’s aspirations to be more than she was and running off with someone like Rumple would mean that yes she would never be a princess but also that she would never be more powerful than him, she didn’t want to be a sidekick or a wife. Even if she loved Rumple and they had run off she would have eventually killed him to the become the Dark One. Rumple was right when he told Regina “Your mother never did you any favors”…This hurts Regina, but in a nutshell it’s just another excuse to wreck havoc on Storybrooke. I wonder if it’ll come out that she murdered Graham…

Question, obviously Regina didn’t know that Cora keeps her heart in her chest, otherwise she wouldn’t have sent Hook to kill Cora in Wonderland and since Cora played dead in the hopes of killing Regina and then discovering Regina’s true motives and deciding not to, if Cora carries her heart around with her ( outside her body, which sounds like a big burden if you ask me)why didn’t Regina ever think to shove it back into Cora’s chest just to see what would happen?!

Anyway, the phone call to Belle and the moment with Bae…Oy! The water works! I just…There are no words to describe Robert Carlyle as an actor…But there are letters: ahxhsujdvmvfrlfystxhwaaw (I have a weird fantasy where he tucks me in and tells me a bedtime story)

Moving on, we have some interesting reactions coming up, Hook discovering Rumple survived, will he care that Cora is dead?! Will he still side with Regina?! If Hook ever gets off the floor maybe he and Regina could start up a little tryst, she could a little fun her life and Hook’s a pirate and a baddie so there’s no commitment necessary.

So “No memory” Belle is almost no longer, I wonder if “Racy” Lacey will remember the phone call with Rumple, if she does she should get on that…I’m sure Rumple wouldn’t mind to get to know Belle’s wild side…

Bae needs to break up with Tamara so that Emma can kiss him like she so desperately wants to!

And finally, Cora wanted to make Snow White’s heart black as coal…This was even before Regina was out for Snow’s heart…So Snow is considerably less pure now, does that mean Cora won? How far does this gray area extend? Frankly I’m glad Snow was finally selfish an manipulative, doing things for the “greater good” only gets anyone so far. She cracked. I feel like Snow has reached Molly Weasley territory…She’s awesome and pleasant but when someone comes close to hurting her family she’s going to take them out with the best battle cry ever…I would love to see Snow protect Emma with a “Not my daughter you, BITCH!”…OMG the writers need to make this happen!

Best. episode. ever. I can’t believe what Snow did. To trick Regina by telling her she’ll get the love that she so desperately craves, and knowing that the moment Regina does it her mom will die. DAMN. To me that’s worse than being the actual murderer. Still shocked by that.

Rumpy & Cora getting it on – Worst. Romance. Ever. Totally gave me the creeps. Do we know if she did actually sleep with him? She said any child she has will not be his, but if you’re married and pregnant the husband is automatically named the father regardless of whether he is or not, and I’m sure she wouldn’t tell anyone.

    Great recap :-)

    Bravo Potty-kins—stellar recap!!!!!!!
The episode like last weeks had me sobbing. When Bae said in such a hurt, little boy voice that he was still angry I had the gaspy sobs. And am a little misty right now—–think happy thoughts: Sheriff McHottypants.

    Whooooooooo boy—-where to start????
OK sexual tension it is!!!!!!——Rumpy and Cora–I have no words other than–If this was on HBO, I think I’d need a cigarette after that scene.

@ 3 Lissa—you are not alone—it was arousing b/c Robert Carlyle can do that–its the intensity and Rose McGowan exhudes sex.

Cora—gotta love the girl’s ambition——I was thinking of Satan in “Paradise Lost”

I did not think Snow was going to do it—-but its revenge (and full on manipulation from Rumpy). Cora killed Snow’s Mother. Regina cast the spell that made Snow send baby Emma thru the portal (And Gepetto–we will address you and YOUR BIG HUGE LIE). Now what is next for Dark Snow?? I say Quest!!!!!

@ 6 April–agreed that Regina is awesome—she is so evil and vulnerable.

@ 9 I Want– good point– the characters are very active in their own stories. I like that Cora was the one who lied about her skill.

Damn— just an awesome episode—–Cora had to die to move the stories along. And we need Dark Snow to QUEST now–find herself and redeem herself. I want her to see the Snow Queen waaaaaaaaay up there (pointing to sky) b/c we need some Hans Christian Andersen.

Questions—just how big is Storey Brooke anyway??? There are chracters that haven’t come to light yet. Can Nealfire do magic? (I think Iposed that q before). Is Henry acting indepently of a story? I mean other than the show’s plot.

OK then—will try to not recomment like crazy today-lol.

Hi Cawfee, I think one of the things I found most interesting about this episode is, yes, it’s about the Miller’s Daughter but that would imply her father would play a role. Except they took care of him by making him a useless sack of drunkenness. Cora didn’t just suffer indignity in the castle. She suffered it in her own home too, she is a typical aspiring princess who wanted adventure and more than the life that everyone expected her to lead. Weird how alike she and Belle are in some aspects, throw Milah in there and I’d say Rumple has a type! But back to my last point, Cora and Belle are a lot alike but Cora became the antithesis of Belle. Which goes back to what I said earlier about the difference between Cora/Rumple and Belle/Rumple, what matters is that in end not that Cora could not give her heart to Rumple but that she darkened her soul in favor being a princess.

I’d like to see Snow find herself but I honestly don’t think she needs to redeem herself. That means giving herself up to Regina and that just won’t work because Regina is all kinds of vengeful. Yes in that moment that Cora died she was angry but Regina will prove to be truly changed if she stops blaming everything on Snow. Similarly, Snow and Mary Margret bleed into each other because of how guilty they feels toward Regina. Regina killed Snow’s father, she tried to kill Snow. No one has benefited from this revenge but it won’t be interesting to see Regina call it a truce. So Snow will feel guilty and do something stupid and Regina will just seeth because she lost her mother and she lost Henry and the Charming’s have everything. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy Evil Regina! What don’t enjoy is Snow feeling guilty. Here is something she was actually proactive in as opposed to not knowing what happened to Daniel even though Regina blamed her. So Snow should test these waters, I’m not saying she should run through the streets of Storybrookeand shout that she killed Cora but she should take a stand, Team Good can fight dirty too!

Storybrooke is a town in Maine, Maine is relatively small but since it was an unknown town it really has no size restraints though I’m sure it’s about the same size as a regular town. You never see the whole town but that’s what allows characters to come out of the woodwork. I see it as a larger scale Wisteria Lane. So Desperate Housewives took place on one street. But they lived in the town of Fairview, which was much bigger. As viewers we’re very contained, we’ve seen one major street, but mostly we’re kept inside: Granny’s, Snow’s apartment, the sheriff station, Regina’s house, Ect.

I don’t think Bae can do magic…it’s a tricky thing because it’s not inherited, all magic is taught, some magic is inside others. If you’re angry enough it seems everyone can do magic, if you’re Emma and Henry, well I’m still confused at to their magic and if it’s really different from Regina and Cora, nevertheless it would seem Emma just needs to focus to feel it.

As far as we know Henry is not a fairy tale character. That’s why he went in search of Emma because he wasn’t in the book. The seer told Rumple that the boy who leads him to Bae “is more than he seems”…So if it is Henry, perhaps there is a tale that has yet to be written but will star Henry? I’ve always enjoyed the idea of a Little Prince but maybe it’s better than Henry isn’t any tale, it leaves it completely open. You know, I always assumed that we went to Neverland in a flashback but wouldn’t it be fantastic if Emma, Bae and Henry ended up in Neverland for some reason?! Especially if Peter and Tink are still in Storybrooke! Ah, this…I like it!

Snow, Henry and Greg were all really irritating this episode. Henry never gets on my never a but and maybe it was the presence of Owen that festered the feeling but I’d had it. Snow too. Being lethargic and crying-y, it was just ridiculous. Regina lost her mother and she was out and about. And Greg…Oh Greg…I did not see the twist coming but he is really glutton for punishment. This whole episode was very good but very odd. There wasn’t nearly enough Graham! And they had him in bed like three times, shirtlessness would have been appreciated but we had him so I’ll take what I can get! But mostly it was Regina running around to little boys being like “LOVE ME!” So creepy! So where is Owen’s dad? Why would Regina keep him?! Something didn’t feel right in this episode, like there were continuity issues…But I’m sure exactly what they are yet.

Ooo interesting Moli and Cawfee…Makes you wonder how many times Gregowen tried to crash into town. And how freaky to see Regina, not aged a day! Explains why he’s so meddlesome! Makes it really curious who Her is…I’ve heard whisperings that there’s an association with Tamara, I’m not sure how I feel about that but I love the idea that Gregowen is the boy who will bring about Rumple’s undoing…I love how all these “Undoing” theories have a way of making the story come full circle, like someone else’s decision perpetuated whatever is to happen in the future. I read a thing that Rumple doesn’t have the power to see the future anymore according to the writers. The curse broke but there wasn’t supposed to be magic in Storybrooke so it’s like wonky, it comes in broken pieces and Rumple can’t really decifer it but the power isn’t what it used to be. I’m confused at why Regina was afraid of Rumple in this episode, does he have his powers back now that he’s back in Storybrooke?

I had another thought but it flew away and I can’t remember right now…If it comes back I’ll post it.

So our dearest Sheriff Graham, I mean Jamie Dornan gave an interview to Wetpaint. I was like crying (with laughter) at the end because when asked aboutEmma’s future love interests he said he is upset she got over Graham so quickly, especially since he died in her arms and he thinks, “She should just stay in and just look at pictures of Graham and wish that I was still around and not hook up with anyone else!”…Who thinks this would make for the most perfect spin off?! Also I figured out what was bothering me about the episode, it wasn’t that there was a continuity error, it was that the flashback felt disingenuous because in present day Storybrooke no one knows the truth of what happened to Graham and I think it’s time Regina admitted to killing him. They had the opportunity, he was in the episode so he was on the viewers’ minds(okay he’s always on our minds but still)…There’s been no justice for Graham and I’d just like to say the truth come out, there’s no point in hiding it anymore! I feel like the writers are gearing to destroy us again because we had Graham this week and August next week, that’s just too giving for this show and well Graham is already dead. And since no one has seemingly given a shit where August has been I feel like we’re in for another emotional week.
