The judges really only heaped praise and gave very little negative feedback. Each designer was then given a chance to explain why they should win and I have to say none of these people have ever taken a course on persuasive reasoning or speaking. They all just rambled on about how much they want it. Dmitry says something about being allowed to fly, but that is the only slightly different variation of “I want it so bad”.
The judges then deliberate alone and they very quickly take down Chris and Melissa. They find Chris’ collection was non-cohesive and not memorable, however competent and pretty. Tara’s was found to be too commercial and expected. The winner’s circle discussion is Unibrow and Dmitry. Unibrow is discussed as a frontrunner for being unique, however they are concerned the unique factor will wear off if this is his only trick. Dmitry is praised for polish and point of view as well as being saleable. It’s very hard to tell which way they’re going to go, but both designers have worked hard and been really great people throughout the competition, so I can’t complain.
When the results are in, the first to be let down is Christopher. He doesn’t look that surprised, but when he greets his family backstage he is already pouting.
Tara is then abruptly told she is out but that they are sure they will see her work in the future. Her family is waiting and they all cry and Tara is very sweet and tries to smile for them and comfort them and it’s a very moving scene. I really thought about halfway through this that she would be the dark horse to take it all but I think she was too wearable and sportswear focused to make a splash on this show.
Tara then comforts Chris and asks who he thinks will win it all. Chris thinks this dying ember of his 15 minutes of fame is a great time to do some image damage control and regain the fans who thought he was such a sweet cute thing in the beginning. Just kidding, he acts like a total dickweed! Chris literally says if Unibrow doesn’t win he’s “Going to be really upset”. So I guess “They both deserve it, but I’m rooting for Fabio” was too hard for Chris to choke out? Or maybe it’s that Unibrow put out something so radically different that Chris can comfort himself that that’s just what the judges were looking for and won’t have to face the fact that Dmitry is a flat-out better designer than him. Truth hurts.
Heidi then lets Dmitry know that he won!!
