Project Runway Recap: Eccentric AND Unique?!?!

TeamKIR returns and bullshits about the Decades theme. Zac earns his paycheck for the episode when he calls Patricia’s design “pow-wow chic.” Heidi sees Michelle and Dick’s design and is reminded of Madonna. She instantly understands that Joseph was going for a sweater dress kind of a look. Nina sniffs out the BS about the Decades theme, and says the theme didn’t stand out to her. They start picking on Joseph for the fit and that his dress has a horizontal stripe-type look to it. When asked who should go home, Dick calls out Amanda, and the rest of the team piles on Amanda when they smell weakness.

As the judges consult privately, everyone is impressed by Benjamin weaving from his homemade loom. Heidi gave the highest score possible to Samantha and Layana. So I guess the win is narrowed down to those three. They talk about TeamKIR, and Leandra feels bad for Amanda. Nina doesn’t think the other designers were fair to Amanda because she likes the design, but Heidi thinks it wasn’t executed as well as it could have been, and Zac takes issue with the proportions. Nina is most definitely not a fan of Joseph’s, but Heidi and Zac defend him, because he is a more avant garde kind of a guy, but agree he could have gone bigger. (I’m telling you, he just shouldn’t have pulled the dress down when it was stuck on the model, and she could have been a cool, beautiful, floral robot. I called it.) They revisit the idea of Amanda, and they’re frustrated that when she was actively listening to constructive criticism, she didn’t fight them and stand up for her work. I’ve just learned that what helps you succeed in the real world puts you in severe danger on Project Runway.

Samantha wins! (I really don’t get it.) Joseph is out. Aw, man! I was just starting to appreciate his eccentric uniqueness! Oh, well. He probably wasn’t really expecting to win the season, anyway. He’s the cat sweater guy, after all. I do find it disappointing, though, that the most unconventional designer was the one Auf’d in the Unconventional Materials Challenge.

Just as the designers are starting to relax a bit, Tim tells them that they’re not done yet: he instructs them to meet him (and Heidi) on the runway in ten minutes. To be continued….

Next week: They’re designing for Miranda Lambert, and Benjamin and Matthew both seem to be having a meltdown. I can’t wait to see who inevitably implies that the country singer, a beautiful, curvy, normal-human-being size 8, is fat. (I’m giving YOU the side-eye, Anthony Ryan Auld.)

So what do you think, Gasmii? Best runway show ever? Did Samantha deserve to win, and why wasn’t Tu in the mix of potential winners? Does Michael Kors need to give Zac Posen lessons in how to be louder and more bitchy? Did the lovely and wonderful Bette Midler contribute anything at all to the discussion? Give us your thoughts in the comments, and I’ll see you back here next week!

I did think it was one of the best runways ever . . . Lilly Pad’s was a train wreck of dreck, and Joseph’s, although not too bad, was the right one to go. To see him argue with Amanda last week and try and to defend his awful, catholic school uniform design sketch for a Heidi challenge, based on a perfume ad, where the silhouette is nearly drawn out for you . . . I just knew . . . he’s got no clue, and probably shouldn’t have been there to begin with.

I liked the winner, but I may have given it to Layana also . . . some really nice work up there, and a very satisfying runway and show. I even liked the Black shade Madonna look . . .

OMG Daniel’s pajamas were the best thing I’ve seen on TV since Jayne Cobb’s hat. It was like a giant bag of Skittles exploded all his body. I had to RR to make sure I’d seen it right.

Daniel’s dress looked like a giant penis. If Michael Kors had been there, he definitely would have called him out for that.

Great recap!! I’ve been hoping someone would! I look forward to your next one! Thanks for having it up so fast!!

This long in the series, they FINALLY realized that flowers are not cheap, and they gave the contestants an adequate budget. I can clearly recall the budget limitations squashing great designer ideas in the very first flower unconventional challenge. One can only imagine what the first season’s designers would have done if they’d been given an equally generous budget at the flower store.

When Amanda picked the moss all I could think of was Andre’s ugly welcome mat dress. I liked Laylani’s dress the best. I hope I have their names correct.
@Dashley – thank you for recapping this! I was starting to go into withdrawals!

I can understand the contestants gasping before Miss M came out because I recognized her from her profile, as well. Although, I wish we’d hear more from her.

Thanks for calling out the lame-o team names. Obviously, these people were not popular in high school. These are names that left out kids pick thinking that’s what the cool kiss would choose. High school sucks; the experience can haunt you the rest of life, even if you get a cool reality tv show.

I want Tim and Daniel to be caught in the workroom having HBNS. That’s hot butt baked sex…high school note writing coding flashback.

I can’t remember the foreign accent highlighter head loomer’s name, but he was not the leader. He should have let the klassy hipster eyeglass guy present his 50′s Dior theme. Not the lame color palette theme he stuttered out to make sure the judges liked him.

LOL @ Amandalee27 They stole Stanley (hipster glasses guy) from the other team because of his leadership qualities but ignore his Dior suggestion. What the?

I totally thought “Midsummer Night’s Dream” fairies when I saw Layana’s dress. It was really cool.

Gotta love their gay gasp over Bette!

“I do find it disappointing, though, that the most unconventional designer was the one Auf’d in the Unconventional Materials Challenge.” (I do, as well – sadhorns)

I also totally loved Layana’s creation. Magical for sure!

Oh, and I, too, miss Kors. His brand of straight up snark was always so much fun.

    THANKS FOR THE LOVE, EVERYONE!
TallGirl- you know, I always hypothesized that the producers knew perfectly well what flowers cost, and they made the budget difficult to work with on purpose. And wasn’t the $2500 for the whole team? So… maybe because some needed more and some needed less, they were able to work it out a little easier than past seasons. ::shrug::
Featherhead – everytime I think of Andrae, I think of Santino doing his Tim Gunn impression, and saying, “AAAHN-draaay!” It makes me laugh EVERY time. Because of that, I was so sad when he got kicked off of all-stars. Thank you for putting his face back in my head now.
AmandaLee- Tim and DANIEL? You see THAT in your head? That’s a crazy circus going on in there, girl… maybe you should see a shrink. I think Matthew is more Tim’s type, not sure why.
AmyOops- Joseph 2016, right?!?! No? Oh, well… anyway, no way on EARTH would I ever be interested in buying anything he would or could ever design, but I was NOT done with his loopy brand of fashion yet. Bummer. :-(

I’m so happy you’re taking this over! You did such an awesome job with BuckWILD; it’s not a show I would ever watch because I’m old but I read every single recap!

I totally don’t get why Tu wasn’t the winner, but I agree that this was the best runway maybe ever. This should be a great season, as long as the product placement doesn’t start to go way overboard a la Top Chef. I get worried when I read things like this:

“Actually, ‘our friends at Glade’ have provided a bunch of candles, because fashion.”

Yes, what better combination could there be than oodles of fabric and flammable plant materials around open flame. (Hilarious, btw.)

    Looking forward to this season!

Loved the recap, can I just beg for more pics?! Please!! I love the pics and the captions the recappers come up with!

I’m calling the Brazilian girl, Layana, for the final 3!! Girlfriend has talent!

@Pegster-BROWNCOATS UNITE!!! :) Love the Jayne comment.

I was actually very impressed with everyone. I thought that the pieces were all pretty amazing. As much as the decade theme was a brilliant pulled-out-of-my-ass-at-the-very-last-second idea, it didn’t hold water. Also, am I the only one that thought Water Lily’s look seemed like she just drizzled glue on her model and rolled her on the floor with some hardware and floral elements? It was AWFUL! But, what do I know, I guess. I also think Water Lily as a person sucks.

I thought the switching of the teams was interesting, especially since both teams had to make some trades. As much as I don’t like Michelle as a person, she’s had some winning looks in the past, and has been kept from winning by the losers on her team.
