Fucking Carolyn Murphy. Take the metal rods out of your neck and stop doing this to my eyes.
The judges are announced and in addition to Mizrahi and the Weinstein Pincushion, we have Michelle Williams, circa 1999, and the only person they could find reading a USA Today – some chick laying out on the beach using it to shield her face from the sun.
On to the show!
Kane – I don’t really see the connection from his picture to his design, but it is fairly restrained for him. Looks like a Stop Staring! dress and while I love a good throw-back, this is a little underwhelming.
Saint Pancake – her look is a great translation of her picture and seems unique, but wearable. I would never wear this but I can appreciate it. A lot of work went into the dying and it really came out nicely. I’m not really getting a huge fancy gown vibe from this but maybe the boxy vest-top is throwing me off.
Andre – His look I kind of like. It is simple and underwhelming, but the colors are very nice. I am surprised this seems to have nothing to do with his sketch or earlier descriptions of his design, I was kind of looking forward to something edgier.
Papa Elsa – I love this look. The pants are amazingly fitted and draped and I am a sucker for a good fedora. I am also a sucker for anything that can be described as either “safari” or “resort”. Fair warning.
Althea – Her look was much maligned in the workroom, but I was holding out to see the final version. I think her idea had a lot of promise but watching the model walk just reiterated why harem pants are a bad thing that happened to us.
Joshua – It looks like he ran out of lifesavers and just wrapped a blue silk towel around her waist. Also he apparently ran out of lifesavers before he got the top to close too and had to turn the whole thing into an actual lifevest.
Uli – Well, I love Uli so of course I love this dress. When she chose clouds and sky I thought we might be seeing the old resort wear Uli (which I would not complain about), but she is still bringing New Uli and I love it.
Ivy – Wow. Color me impressed with Ivy. I know I was the sole supporter of her look last week so maybe the same will hold true but I really like this. It is funky and interpretive but forward-thinking and still beautiful to me. I have some reservations about the fit of that top however.
Except for the unique textiles, Ivy basically did a better version of Saint Pancake’s design. Which is evident to everyone as it turns out.
