Project Runway Recap: Instagramtastic

Aryan – His dress is fun and flirty and maybe a little Bebe, but I like it and the back is interesting enough to push it into a more fashionable territory. It’s definitely a great interpretation of his picture too.

DeadMauth – I like this a lot more than I expected to. It’s still a bit of a mess and I think it starts veering more towards the Avant Garde territory with how exaggerated the look is when compared to the inspiration, but I like the idea. The fabric choice is a little sleeping bag chic however so I’m thinking a less rumply material could have put this over the edge for me.

The safety dance is performed this week by Uli, Ivy, Papa Elsa and Kane. So much for my favorites!

Althea is up first and gets a lot of praise for her jacket and even the concept, but no one is impressed with her pants. Mizrahi compares the weird tuck/fold in the front to “ a wound”. Also I never noticed how darn pretty her model is.

Can’t hide this under a bushel … of harem pants

Aryan gets high praise for everything except they are tired of how awesome he is. They love his dress, the back, the inspiration and the interpretation. They say though that in color and shape he makes this dress a lot and needs to push himself harder.

But not so hard that he starts taking performance-enhancing steroids

Joshua gets panned for a mishmash of crazy and it has to hurt having a new one ripped by the 14 year old ghost of Michelle Williams.

“I have eyeliner older than you”

Andre explains his photo choice because he identified with the forlorn air of the girl, but no one is getting it. It doesn’t help that he translated “forlorn” into a bright minidress. They critique his fabric choice and he basically gets a terse bad, but not terrible, review.

“She looks so sad, just like the Jamaican flag!”

Saint Pancake recieves high praise for her look. Georgina points out that the skirt could be about a half-inch longer and that is a sure sign that this is a good look if she’s being that particular. These judges seem to work to find something praiseworthy if the look is awful and something to complain about if they love it. Amateurs. Perhaps that’s just magical elves trying to keep us guessing? I can’t begrudge her the praise, but even St P’s model doesn’t seem to want her to win.

“She keeps calling me a ‘disadvantaged youth’”

MrsMiaWallace is an east coast girl with a  penchant for travel, libations and great cuisine. She is not known to turn down a mimosa or a martini and finds the transition between the two a good way to mark the passing of time since she can never remember to wear a watch. Her secret love for reality tv and addiction to Bravo have drawn her like a moth to the glittering snark of TVGasm,  where she finds there are others like her... hopefully also nursing Bloody Marys.

Nothing will ever top Emilio wanting to call his dress ‘Sophie’s Choice’. Yes, Emilio, do name your creation based on the picture of that cute little girl upon the movie in which a mother chooses to send her own little girl into the Nazi gas chambers and crematorium. It’s that ‘feel good’ aspect to the story that you really want to key into when selling your design.

I guess we’re about halfway through the season now and I still hate Ivy. I just can never forget her assholery from her original season. She will always be that Ivy to me.

My jaw dropped when he said Sophie’s Choice. She had to choose between her little boy and even younger little girl as to which would be killed immediately- right in front of them!! She did choose to send her son at that time, they killed her daughter later. Now I’m really depressed again…THANKS LOADS EMILIO!

I don’t think everyone’s ‘jealous’ of Pancake Brain, I think they’re just too nice to tell her that Missouri is NOT a fancy way of spelling Monaco.

I thought this interview of Laura Kathleen was interesting. She says her wealthy background is something she decided to push after having tried out for the show 4 times and realizing she needed a backstory in order to be cast. She also says money means having a sewing machine (really?) and being able to sew on silk:

“Do you think that having been more financially well-off while growing up gave you an advantage on the show?
“I think starting from an early age gave me an advantage – it gave me one when I was in college because I had more experience behind a sewing machine. As for having access to higher end fabrics, it definitely helped because a lot of the designers hadn’t sewn with real silk before and that’s a real skill to learn. In the workroom, everyone was saying that I was a master of silk because I would run through it as if it was denim. So it definitely helped but I think what was most helpful was being behind a sewing machine.”

So glad you mentioned the host’s horrific dress in your recap: that thing was as strange and ugly as the worst of the worst PR challenge creations.

Ivy’s like a whole different person. It’s tough to forget her behavior on her previous season, but somewhere she found some decency, humor, and a touch of talent (remember how her first season she just made drawstring pants and sack tops in neutral colors?). Saint Pancake is the reigning bitch and I cut her no slack. Maybe you need a backstory for casting, but it’s just plain tacky to talk about how much money you (or actually your family) has. This is why people hate and mock the new rich.

I’d wondered who Anthony Ryan was this whole season until he brought up the cancer and I remembered him as the guy a previous recapper used to call “Nutless,” more for his habit of crying like a baby girl over everything than because he’d had testicular cancer. Hey, I guess contestants really do need those backstories!

If Tiffani could completely rehab her image when she appeared on TC All Stars, Ivy can, too. It just takes a moment to say “You know what? I was a complete bitch the last time and it wasn’t the editing,” to start fresh and Ivy did that, just like Tiffani did.

And with Laura Kathleen and Josh still in the mix, Ivy would have just been their second-string bitch, anyway. No one cares that Laura Kathleen has a privileged background but Laura Kathleen. Because she needs something that makes her special.

vallegirl: because apologizing for being a bitch worked so well for the Bachelor’s Courtney Robertson, right?

I think an image turnaround is best accomplished by the producers via good editing, as with Gunna and Christopher and Elena in Season 10. It wasn’t really whether they apologized; it’s just that they got a different edit halfway through.

I like Emilio’s dress…I think if it had been a bit more fitted on top so it didn’t just hang there, then it would have been better.
Uli’s was also one of my favorites, so I was disappointed that she wasn’t in the top this week.

I have no words for Emilio wanting to call his dress Sophie’s Choice. And then when Joanna was trying to explain to him why that was the worst idea ever conceived, he was like yeahhh…I remember the Meryl Streep…and how deep it was….and then he awkwardly trailed off. Didn’t mention the Nazis or the dead children or the traumatized mother or any of the other things that most people think about when they hear Sophie’s Choice.
So maybe the issue is not that he’s insensitive, but moreso that he’s never seen Sophie’s Choice and has no clue what the story is about. Maybe he just knows it’s a famous movie with a recognizable name and thought it would be good to play off it.
That in itself is some stupidity, because you can’t reference something that you don’t understand.
But I’d rather think that then think that he’s a complete idiot.

Sad that Andrae is gone, and I felt bad that he never really felt accepted by the other designers, but he did need to go home. I have no clue what he was doing this season smh.

I liked Ivy’s look this week too. I thought she should have been in the top. Ivy seems like a different person this season. I couldn’t stand her in her original season and was fully prepared to hate her now, but I can’t find much to hate on anymore. She and Uli are my favorites so far this season.

Fortunately Pancake is there to be the bitch. Although I actually liked her look a lot. The dyeing effect was really pretty. I don’t know why she’s whining about other people always bringing up her privileged background. On her season it was the first thing she mentioned about herself. You don’t want people to make a big deal about your wealthy family, you don’t make a big deal about it yourself. If she felt like she had to push the “rich girl” aspect to get on the show, maybe she wasn’t talented enough?

I really didn’t get the love for Emilio’s dress. The only thing it was good for was making me laugh about Emilio seriously wanting to call it Sophie’s Choice – really, Emilio? You want your look to make people think of the Holocaust and dead children?

Not Heidi’s Martian dress officially out-uglies anything Heidi ever wore. Did someone actually get paid money to make that thing?

Sad about Andrae, but I have to admit he wasn’t doing that well.

The look on Joanna’s face when Emilio floated the ‘Sophie’s Choice’ name was one for the ages too. If you look up ‘recoil’ in the dictionary, you will see Joanna making that face. I agree that I got the absolute impression that Emilio had never seen the movie and had no idea what the ‘choice’ actually was. I never wanted to see the movie and only a few months ago got sick of hearing the ‘choice’ referenced and looked it up to read a synopsis of the movie so I now know what the choice was otherwise I wouldn’t know either. (As an aside, sooooo glad I skipped that movie now, seriously.) So what I like to imagine is Emilio asking someone about it later or looking it up himself on the internet and the look on his face when he realizes what he almost did. That’d be such a great face to see, that moment of clarity. :)

But his dress itself? No, I didn’t get it. Maybe with a more tailored top but hanging there like a tent? No. Just no.

@vallegirl- I completely 100% agree. Tiffani did a complete 180 on TC. And it felt real. Not due to editing. I think Ivy has done a similar move. Good for her. She was super mean on her own season.
It makes me sad, because I like Laura on her original season. She was cute and bubbly. And now apparently she’s just a brag and tacky. So disappointing.
Anthony Ryan was amazing on his season and he’s holding true to it now.
Last all-star round was the redemption of Mondo. I’m not sure who I think this one is for. Maybe Aryan?
