Previously: Karent pissed off everyone but Lisa and Joanna. It is no coincidence that Lisa and Joanna were the people she hung out with the least…
We open back at Mynt, but on a Monday at 4am or something when it’s both dark outside and empty inside. Marta has stopped by because she needs to repair her relationship with Romain at Joanna’s behest. The more I watch these three, the more I think they’re in some kind of sick ménage a trois. Romain appears to have taken a hand in his own editing, because he finishes a conversation with some dude named Robert Jones who compliments Romain on an app he “wrote” and namedrops that a famous football player is coming some night soon.
There should be an applause sign blinking above his head.
Marta tells him that he’s been distant lately and she doesn’t understand why. Calmly, Romain tells her that he feels she’s been lazy lately. He doesn’t see her going after her career with any sort of fire and if she’s going to be living with them and not working, then she needs to start helping out around the house. If Marta wanted to cultivate Romain’s respect in this situation, all she would have had to do was say, “You know what, Romain? You’re right. I have been spinning out a little bit lately. Working in the entertainment industry can be really draining – I put in a lot of energy and I don’t get anything back most days. I get discouraged sometimes and that’s when I just start avoiding things and partying and living vicariously through my sister. I’ll refocus and in the mean time, I’ll buy groceries once a week and make sure things stay tidy in the common areas.”
Instead, she starts crying. See, Marta isn’t just any normal girl. She’s an actress, single and a girl at the SAME TIME. Having been such a girl myself, I can tell you that every single slight, perceived insult and piece of constructive criticism cuts like a dagger right to the heart because your life is hella dramatic (chosen career field and all) and the only person to focus on is YOURSELF. Sucks. Drinking helps, but it’ll eventually make you ugly, so watch it.
Marta weeps that Romain just doesn’t understand that it’s TEN times harder to get a job in music and acting than it is in any other industry. What Romain understands and what Marta doesn’t is that that means you have to WORK ten times harder than you do in any other industry. It becomes clear to Romain pretty quickly that this is not a concept Marta is ready to grasp as Marta blubbers about not wanting to be seen as a lazy mooch and that she just needs sup-p-ooorrt. Romain goes off to a happy place and lets Marta cry it out – at least until she brings up the idea of moving out. Then that sexy (always sexy) Frenchman perks riiiight up. He gently agrees that that would help his relationship with Joanna… nudge nudge… wink wink… get out… The
couple two head out in a better place, and Romain’s brain was probably glad for some much needed down time.
