I could have done without the crawling on the floor.
Adam says he thinks if some things were a little different in his life that he would move to Salt Lake City. LOLOLOL! He thinks she’s fun and fantastic to watch but there wasn’t much there in technique. Mary would like to see if she can do something else. Nigel got a boner but would like to know if she can do more than crawl around on the ground. She’s going through to choreography.
Now we get the montage o’crappy dancers. I get even more annoyed than usual because we’ve already been subjected to full segments of crappy dancers. GAH!
Time for the last audition. Leroy Martinez is a big guy with a big heart. He’s wearing a T-shirt with “Peacemakers” on it and he takes this opportunity on national TV to tell us all a little bit about the organization that exposes kids to dance to keep them out of trouble. LOVE HIM. Of course Nigel eats this up because he’s all about dance as a savior to the youth (especially if he can circle it back to SYTYCD), but here is one area where I almost always DO agree with Nigel. Dance is a magical thing and I can never fault an organization that fosters love of dance (or other arts) in kids.

Not only is Leroy a sweetie, but the guy can MOOOOOOOVE!!! Holy cow! For a big guy he’s surprisingly nimble. He’s surprised the judges as well as I think they were prepared for a heartwarming shout out to his organization, a pat on the head, and a trip out the door. Nigel and Mary actually high fived during his routine!
Adam tells Leroy that he is why dance is so amazing and important. Mary doesn’t know if he can make it one the show but he’s going places in life. And Nigel talks again about how dance makes us all better people.
What? I’m a better perv than I would have been without dance.
Adam tells him that this is why this is his favorite job, because of people like Leroy that inspire him and make him happy to be a part of something special like this. He loves his spirit and thinks that he is phenomenal. FUCKING AWESOME!!!
Mary tells Leroy he is an absolute joy and he’s just one of those people that you want to route for. She’s not sure he can be a competitor on the show, but he is a competitor in life. Nigel thinks Leroy embodies the spirit of dance.
Leroy gets to go to choreography. After Nigel tells him he doubts he’ll be able to do it. He’s such a horse’s ass. He doesn’t have much time to catch his breath because the choreography round is starting now!!
Johnny and Whitney get the boot. Thank god. Corset clad Rachel gets put through to Vegas and I think it’s because Nigel wants to see what other underwear she’s gonna wear as dancewear. And last but not least, it’s Leroy’s turn. It’s no surprise that they cut Leroy even though he hung in there a hell of a lot more than they thought he would (and better than we’ve seen other people do and still get a ticket).
And there you have it, Gasmi. We’ve reached the end of the audition rounds and are now headed to Vegas. Are you as excited as I am???
Thank so much for reading and for your commentary, you always make my day! Oh, and thanks for your patience this week – I was trying to get the recap banged out a little sooner, but between my birthday and the first dance recital for my sister’s studio, it became obvious very quickly that I had overestimated my time management skills!!
See ya soon!

Season 7 was the one where there was only a top 10…plus Billy. With a regular top 20, Adrian probably would have made the cut. And while I can kind of understand why he felt so dejected, I was also a little put off by how accusatory he seemed while retelling the story. Dude, it sucked you tried out on the odd season out but acknowledge and move on.
And I had the exact reaction to Gene you did…the more he talked to Cat the stabbier I felt and then he danced and I was really surprised. So I was primed to really like Murphy since I figured he’d be this season’s Tadd…but, no.
It’s about time they had some ballroom dancers. Witney Carson was fabulous! She reminded me of Chelsie Hightower too. Lindsay Arnold wasn’t nearly as good. I expected Gene to be a joke audition, too, but Sonja or Mia could do some really cool things with him. Johnny Ahn? Ewww ewww ewww! So skeezy!! And charm factor? Um, no.
I’m excited for this season, but also apprehensive because it seems like it’s going to be another contemporary/jazz heavy season.
I liked Witney too. I can’t imagine how her dad felt about Nigel perving on her.
I loved the Krump girl, she was just so unexpected. I would love to see her dance with Russell doing choreography by Lil C. There hasn’t been a good girl hip hopper in a while.
Hopefully at least one of my early favorites make it through Vegas.
There was a point early on in Rachel’s audition when they cut to Mary and Nigel. Mary has a “WTF?” face on, while Nigel is grinning from ear to ear. Classic pervy Nigel!!!
It was nice to see some ballroom dancers, I agree. There were some particularly good female dancers in the ballroom crowd.
There are a bunch of people on the interwebz who think they are Pelaidians. Or this chick has cosmically danced all over virtual life posting wildly.
Ugh, too much time spent on bad dancers. I caught that thing where Adrian said he hadn’t told his family he was auditioning, but then called his mom and said he made it to Vegas with no explanation. I was thinking it may have been editing…maybe he started the conversation with explaining where he was and they just didn’t show it. I guess I don’t want to think he just blatantly lied.
Also, I hate hate hate that Rachel chick. She didn’t dance! She just got up on stage and writhed around for pervy Nigel. Congratulations, you have the talent to be a stripper.
I thought the same thing about Adrian, but when he called his mom she asked where he was. They probably thought there was a chance he might do it, but he never confirmed it.
@SouthernTippi – I caught that part where his mom asked him where he was, too. But hadn’t thought they would have suspected he was going to try out.
And even if they hadn’t, it’s his second time to get through to Vegas. It probably wasn’t hard to figure out what he meant by it.
Awesome as always, PM! I fullllly expected to hate that praying mantis guy, so wow was I floored when he danced! My DH was too, in fact, he made me back it up to watch again. Just awesome!
I’m not sure who that Rachel girl reminds you of, unless, were you at Pacers last week? (Sorry, local strip joint in San Diego — only person I could think that she might have reminded you of).
I was thoroughly prepared to hate mantis-boy, and I adored him. I honestly didn’t think I’d like krump-girl as much as I did– I trained in ballet and jazz, mostly, but she rocked, in a big way. I hope she can learn other styles, because even in choreo, she was pretty “hard”.
Question – does anyone know if they leak the “guest/3rd” judge ahead of time? It seemed like Atlanta got a lot of the “Debbie Allen” type dancers, and so on and so forth. Now, I’m from Atlanta, and that could just be my perception of the dancers they showed – or it’s just the way the show was edited. But it seems like if you’re really a certain style – you might try to make sure you travel to where the guest/3rd judge who likes/knows that style best is going to be.
PottyMouth!!! Where have you been these past seasons??? LOVE your recaps and am SO glad that I found you!! I only wish I had found you sooner :” (
My sincere wish for this year is a return to great choreography. I miss the ‘Wow!’ dances – Wade Robson “Rama” and Nappy/Tabs “Outa Your Head” and Sonya “The Garden”- that kind of stuff! Last year seemed kinda… ‘meh’ to me, does that make sense? Maybe it was just me, I don’t know?
Anyway, thanks for the fun and fantastic recaps! And if the creeper ballet guy makes top 20, I will cheer you on with any and all nasty comments you deem appropriate to post!! Ewwww!! So wrong!!
