Hi Gasmi. Not sure who saw my comment in the previous recap and who didn’t, but needless to say this recap is fucking late as late can be. Here’s the thing: I broke my ankle. Fun times. And lots and lots of pain.
Pain appears smaller than in real life.
Pain is no fun, so I got me some mighty fine painkillers. The problem with them? Zzzzzzzzzz. No, they’re not boring. They make me boring. And sleepy. And possibly a moron. Or maybe I was already one of those and just better at hiding it. The point is, I’ve been sleeping instead of writing. And now that I am writing I feel like I’m going on and on about nothing so I apologize in advance for any nonsensical writing. Also, I refuse to be held responsible for spelling errors. At least in this recap.
Um. Okay then, I think we’re ready to go. Hopefully. Where was I?
You were just about to say how gorgeous I Iook.
Yes! Cat is gorgeous tonight and ditched the old lady hair. SO happy about that one!
Wait. Did she just say the season finale is THREE weeks away?!?!?!? How the fuck is THAT possible???? I was thinking TWO weeks and hoping for one. UGH. I’m so ready for this season to be over.
Time for the opening number.

Hm. This one is by Peter Chu who I actually LOVE as a choreographer and dancer, but it is not one of my favorites of his. Honestly, I thought it was a little boring and that was BEFORE I was on pain meds. The second time around….well let’s just say that I lost some time between grabbing the first picture and the second one.
I expect more from you sir.
Joining Mary and the Perv at the judges’ table this week is dance aficionado Jesse Tyler Ferguson. One part of that sentence is a lie. But I like the dude, so there’s that. Although I am a little sad because I was just talking last time about how much I loved having judges with real dance experience rather than a sitcom.
Still love you, still mean it.
Cat loves him too. They’re both invited to my SYTYCD slumber party
And me?
HELL no!!!!!! Not even if you paid me.
Cat tells us that each dancer will be performing their solo this week as well as dancing with an all-star. Also, because that will not fill up enough time and there is no guest performance this week (spoiler!) we will get to hear all about who they are and how they grew up.
If you like it, spread it!:

Im still a little ticked at Lindsey going home over Witney. I think Lindsey was way better at the various styles they gave her. I was never wowed by witney, but lindsey had a few great dances.
Will leaving however, makes me almost want to stop watching. I loved him him, and thought he did great every week. He was also never given great choreography, not given many moments, and went home on a night where he did better than the person saved. He was also better than Cole was last week.
I’m only watching for Chehon and Eliana
It was me who pointed out that Eliana is not all the way over the box when dancing. That is one of my major ballet pet peeves, but I love Eliana so much that it doesn’t bother me as much when she does it. I mean, she’s still young, she has lots of time to keep working on her technique.
I am hoping for an Eliana win at this point, with Tiffany as my second choice. Both have great personalities, both have done very well with every style that is thrown at them and they both deserve it. I do love Eliana more though. As a (former) ballerina myself, I gotta give my ballet peeps some love!
Chehon is my favourite guy at this point and I hope that he wins as well. (Forgot for a moment that a girl AND a guy win this year.) I do like Cole and Cyrus, but Chehon is by far the better dancer. I am really hoping for a Chehon/Eliana/Tiffany/Cole finale, but we’ll see what happens. I suspect that Cyrus could edge in there over Cole (or even over Chehon) but Witney has been in the bottom so much, I’m not sure that she’ll get in over the other two girls.
I’m sorry to hear about your ankle! Interesting coincidence, I just got my cast taken off last week – I broke my ankle at the beginning of the summer. I feel your pain, truly. Rest up and get well soon! And I highly recommend physiotherapy after an ankle break. I did therapy for a few weeks when I broke my ankle a few years ago and it really helped me get my strength and flexibility back.
So sorry to hear about the ankle PottyMouth! I hope that the pain killers make the experience a little more worthwhile. I was sad to see Will go – I loved him! Also would have preferred to see Witney leave before Lindsay. Looking forward to this week but would love it even more if Nigel contracted laryngitis!
Great recap – even on drugs! Get better soon!
Honestly that Cole piece was all about Allison. Cole kind of blended into the background-he’s supposed to be this evil soulless guy that this woman is throwing herself at, and he never brought his energy up to her. Plus Allison is a bad ass. She’s just gotten better and better every year.
If Eliana doesn’t win for the girls, something is wrong with the world. She’s stunning. She even managed to be stunning when she had cyrus as a partner. She needs to win. I’m bitter that Will left because I also thought he was great. Certainly more than cyrus, and even more than Cole. I’m hoping for Cheon at this point.
Overall I thought Lindsay was better than Witney. Her solo as a tango was certainly better than Witney’s sexy posing every few steps. Other than this misstep with Alex, which while technically quite good for anyone (esp a ballroom girl) lacked verve. Plus hasn’t Witney been in the bottom 3 or 4 times now? Shouldn’t that be sending a message? But we all knew who Nigel was going to keep. Tiffany needs to pull it out next week, because he’ll want to keep Eliana and Witney for the finale.
@1 Lauren– me too– I think that Whitney and Lindsey are vote splitters– too similar in looks and style.
@ 2 Georgia– I love Eliana too– always good to see a ballet girl getting her time.
Has anyone else noticed (and I tend to OCD on things) that the stage doesnt appear to be in good dance shape?? I think there are alot of slick spots and no rosin put down for the dancers.
passing Potty an ice pack and cookies– feel better doll

I know I’m in the minority, but I find Cole absolutely riveting. I can’t take my eyes off him when he’s dancing.
I think it’s a travesty that Will (and George for that matter) went home before Cyrus. However much Nigel prattles on about best vs. favorite, and however good Cyrus is at his own thing, I just don’t think he’s even in the same league as the other male dancers. I wish the judges would stop kissing his a$$ and at least give him a viable critique once in awhile. AND I think Eliana wasn’t able to develop as she would have had she been with a partner who challenged her more.
I’m rooting for Cole and Eliana.
I love Jesse Tyler Ferguson. After he judge last time I marathon Modern Family.
I don’t care that much about Lindsey or Witney so either of them could have gone. Will was nice and a good dancer but his personality could be grating at times. So I’m not sorry to see him go either.
This whole season has been meh for me. Next season they should really bring the All-Stars and an actual All-Stars season , that way we could have a season full of wow dancers.
So The Crimson White, University of Alabama’s student paper, interviewed Janelle the bellydancer. It was kind of interesting. http://cw.ua.edu/2012/08/27/sytycd-competitor-recaps-her-television-experience/
How the heck has Cyrus not been in the bottom yet! I don’t get it! At least Will went home this week, instead of Cole. Clearly Cole and Chehon are the 2 best out of those 4. I don’t see how Will and Cyrus weren’t the bottom. Of course I actually like Will’s dance this week. That type of hip hop really suited him. I usually hate how imprecise he is, but it didn’t bother me in that routine. Also, helped that he was really dancing with the Spawn of Satan
I agree with a lot of the other people that Witney should have gone home before Lindsey. The judges love her, but she just hasn’t wowed me with anything. I knew the judges were setting Lindsey up to go home though with all their “lack of chemistry” comments.
My choice for top 4: Cole, Chehon, Eliana and Tiffany. Eliana for the win (don’t care which guy wins)
wasn’t really dancing with the spawn of satan that is. I honestly didn’t even notice her at all in that dance. My focus was all on him.
I would like to point out that JTF is a graduate of American Music & Dramatics Academy (AMDA) in NY, and has appeared and danced in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”, so he does have some dance experience.
I thought maybe the reason they haven’t really critiqued Cyrus is because they are afraid that would encourage more people to vote for him. As much as I can’t stand The Perve, it isn’t his fault that Cyrus is still there if he hasn’t been in the bottom two. I personally think Cyrus wants to be done.
Broken and sprained ankle – been there and it stinks! Take care
ANTM- I absolutely adore Cole. I usually want a girl to win but my girl went home. So Cole and Chehon. Cole first because he’s Asian, has black hair, and like my son, started TKD at 11 because he was getting picked on. My son was 10.I thought he was little and would be good at acrobatics. Wrong. But a TKD studio opened up next to my daughter’s preschool and the master had one student. TThen a sound came out of his mouth I’d never heard before-his first Keeyap. He won the junior Olympics every year for Washington State.,which was probably easier than in Hawaii because there were fewer boys in his weight and age class. He frequently fought kids who weighed twice what he did and had arms 6 or 8 inches longer. But he was fast-lol. Cory, though, had to fight more kids. The only person I’ve ever seen as fast as Cory was my son’s teacher, who was a 6th degree black belt and the heavy weight National Champ of Korea. (No idea if he dances.) Cory is really truly amazing.
Chehon looks like Harry Connick Jr.’s younger brother. And that Tango last week -I think I re-played it 8-1o times. That was hot. And the music was supurb! I ordered the CD. Can’t wait to have it arrive. That was so good. Yum. The Ultimate Jesse Cook-2cd package! for $7.99.
I completely agree with @georgiababe. Eliana is my favorite and has been since her audition. I tend to be good at picking reality tv show winners early on…I wish there was a fantasy league for that random skill, hehe. Anyways, she is stunning to watch. As Jesse Tyler Ferguson said, the “Bang Bang” routine last week was the best all season. Tiffany is my runner up…she really brings it every week.
For the guys, I am rooting for Chehon. His solo routine made me cry too! It was so perfectly beautiful. And his mother is too adorable! I was so happy for him in that moment. I am still disappointed that George went home. I think it would have been exciting to see him and Chehon as the final two guys. I do love Cyrus, but he is not the best dancer, and I don’t think it’s fair for him to win.
Feel better PottyMouth!
Thanks for all the well wishes everyone! I never knew such a small part of the body could hurt SO FUCKING MUCH! Oof.
Lauren: I agree that Witney should have gone home before Lindsay, but I knew Nigel would save her. He’s so gross.
georgiababe: I should have remembered it was you! I’m in the same boat; I usually nitpick the hell out of stuff like that, but I find myself not caring as much when it comes to her. She really is something. Chehon IS a far better dancer than the other two guys but I don’t think there is any way in hell that he is going to win. It’s gonna be Cole or Cyrus, mark my words.
Pikey578: I wish someone would remove Nigel’s vocal cords permanently. But laryngitis would do if that’s not possible.
Kammie: Thanks!
L: You’re so right about that piece. It really was all about Allison who is so freaking amazing and keeps getting better and better all the time. I just LOVE her. I hope Eliana can pull out the win, but who knows? After all, we all know what happened season 3. STILL bitter.
hot cawfee: I have seen so many stages in worse shape I guess I hadn’t really noticed this one’s poor upkeep. Honestly, I’d be surprised if they put down rosin on the stage itself – it’s not appropriate for every type of dancing, but I’d at least hope Eliana had the opportunity to use some if she needed it on her pointe shoes. Thanks for the ice pack and cookies! Hopefully I can remember which one goes on my foot and which goes in my mouth, lol!
ANTM Fan: Cyrus should have been sent home at least a few weeks ago. I think he probably knows that as well and is just as shocked as we are about his lack of bottom two placement. I still think the guy is a sweetheart, but I really wish he’d get sent home before the final performances. Somehow I think I’m going to be disappointed.
sagittariuskim: Thanks for the link to that interview; she seems to be handling her ouster well and appreciating the show for what it is and what it could do for her. An all star season would be VERY cool. I know I have at LEAST twenty dancers who I would LOVE to see come back. The problem is that Nigel would probably bring back people like Satan’s Spawn. And then a murder would have to happen.
jerseyj: I thought that was the best use of Satan’s Spawn in a dance for sure! I could block her out and really just focus on Will. And I totally agree; that style of hip hop is a winner for him.
ww: Yes, yes, you are right about JTF. BUT I still like it better when they have DANCE people as judges rather than actors that may have danced. A little. That said, he is my favorite non-dance judge and I think he’s adorable. I think you’re right about the whole Cyrus thing – I think he knows he’s out of his league, but no one is getting him out of there if stupid America keeps voting for him!
KartofflMuter: There will actually be a boy AND a girl winner this year. I have a couple of friends whose kids are into TKD; one who gets picked on and one who needs more “discipline”, or so they say. I think it’s great that it helped Cole and helped your son too.
Colleen: So glad to see another Eliana fan here. And another sappy crier as well!! I rewatched him again and STILL got all misty eyed. I think it’s the medication. Yup. That’s what it is.
Thanks again for the well wishes and hopefully being laid up means I can actually get the recap out sooner this week! That’s just a hypothesis, not a promise!!
SWAK, PottyMouth
I agree with everyone that Lindsay should have stayed over Witney, but both girls have been in the bottom several times so I wasn’t too surprised by the outcome. I actually prefer Tiffany over Eliana, at least as far as personality goes.
Not that I don’t like Eliana, but for some reason I find Tiffany more personable. If I had it my way, it would definitely be 2 girls that won…I find Chehon and Cole to be lackluster as far as personality, and obviously Cyrus should have never made it this far.
Sorry about your ankle, PM!
A word about the bottom two: they are not necessarily the viewer voters’ bottom two. If the producers want another dancer to go, they do put that person in the bottom two, regardless of the vote count. The only time it is entirely viewer decided is the final. (I’m not just speculating on this. I saw an interview with a former winner and the final four got to have a Q & A with Nigel.)
I finally figured out what really bugs me about the format this season. Having the performances and eliminations all in on night works for shows like America’s Best Dance Crew because the dancers always compete in teams and therefore there’s a build-up to the elimination and the performances don’t feel like potential throwaways. They gradually reveal who is safe and who has to dance for their lives, so when the bottom teams are dancing for their lives, there’s actual drama — you know that they’re dancing for the chance to stay.
You can’t do follow format when the dancers are dancing in pairs but judged individually. So in each performance, I find myself being less invested because I know (as Nigel basically reminds each week) that the judges have already made up their minds about who is going home. And since we don’t know that until after everyone has danced, there’s this feeling that any one of these performances could be a complete waste of time.
That’s not to say that there haven’t been a lot of mediocre performances this season too — more than usual. But I wonder if it’s partly because the dancers are less invested in performances that could likely wind up being throwaways as well.
Nigel makes this situation even worse by the way he telegraphs the outcomes during the performances. Before they even got to the bottom 4, I knew that Cyrus wasn’t hitting the bottom because of Nigel’s blathering comments about how he’s never been even close to the bottom and people just love him. I knew Whitney wouldn’t go home even if she hit the bottom, because of Nigel’s blatant boner for her. And on the opposite end, I knew that Lindsay was likely to go home because of Nigel’s reverse boner for her (I agree she’s kind of bland, and I don’t think either of the ballroom girls are great at ballroom, but she edges out Whitney for me when it comes to performing other styles.
Eliana is one of the really bright spots of this season for me. I think she’s absolutely gifted and I look forward to seeing what she does next. I was afraid for her when I heard that she drew the Quickstep, but she tackled it brilliantly (and it helps that she had good choreography that made it less stuffy). Eliana for the win!
Of the boys, I like both Cole and Chehon for different reasons, so I’m glad that both of them survived. But I’ve gotten to the point where I just need Cyrus — nice as he is — to go. IMO, he doesn’t even have enough personality to begin to justify his continuance. I really wasn’t even impressed with his solo — it just felt like I’d already seen it before. One trick pony.
I seriously think this might be the worst season of SYTYCD yet. Stop ruining things for us, Nigel Lythgoe! We only tolerate you because you produce a show we all love, but that credit is quickly slipping away….
OMG! First number tonight was AMAZING! In love with Tiffany now!
Oh yeah, my other thought on last week: I thought Whitney did ok, but her performance was more “hairography” than choreography (so sorry for quoting Glee!)
I agree, tntjunky, Tiffany was pretty awesome in that opening piece. I still think Eliana is hands down the best girl though!
With you on that Lizbot. Eliana is my choice for the win i just never appriciated Tiffany’s talent before. Here’s to those 2 being in the finale!
Every time that Nigel opens his mouth tonight, the thought that keeps popping into my head is “STFU!”
And yes, tntjunky, I want an Eliana-Tiffany finale too — but I have a feeling that Nigel’s favourite jailbait is somehow going to sneak through. It’s a shame, too, because we finally get some diversity among the girls this year after such a long drought (2 ballroom girls in the top 8?) but the result was kind of underwhelming.
Why are we just now getting some wow routines?
Good question. Tonight was by far the best of the season.
Still some major BS going on, though.
When Witney’s package came up and her dad talked about how he hated her being all sexy, I couldn’t help but think of your comments about Nigel. Wonder if he felt awkward at all…..probably not
I missed a few seasons of SYTYCD…why is Lauren the spawn of Satan?
I thought it was so disrespectful this episode when the judges didn’t even acknowledge Ryan’s presence (the quick step with Eliana). I thought their dance was great. Other “all stars” get a tongue-bath, this guy didn’t even get a “welcome back”. At least Cat had some manners.
This season has just been blah. I’m annoyed Cyrus is still around. I’m annoyed at the judges praising his dancing when I’ve just watched him not be good. I just blech. It’s weird because I love some of the dancers. But it’s not working for me. I also have to admit I just don’t like Melanie and I don’t usually end up liking routines she’s in. So I really didn’t like even her part of the Cyrus routine and he was dreadful.
-runs through screaming-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I’m SO pissed about the results on last night’s show (boys). And WTG Nigel, on conveniently incorporating a dubstep routine. Never been done before, but of course, Cyrus gets it. Which wasn’t even that good when he wasn’t doing his animation.
Well, thanks for ruining it for me @sfspurri. How about a spoiler alert next time? It’s not even a full day after the show aired, give a gal some time to watch her DVR!
